I think from what I read we are picking up the contract and it’ll be Happ going down before Walrond.

Gillick has made a habbit of picking up relievers well into their mid thirties and we’ve paid dearly for it with sub-par relievers and having to re-model our pen every year to replace departing free agents not under team control. Eyre’s K/BB rate is promising and it makes sense he suffered from a lack of work but when and how is he going to be used here?

If it means drating elite college relievers high we better start doing it because we have not had one minor league starter transition into a major-league calibre reliever since Madson who’s creeping towards his walk year.

Eyre’s $3.8 million contract (about $1.5 million still owed to him).

Todd: Are you sending text messages or posting comments? Please use words. It takes too damn long to figure out what the hell you are saying. As far as this team goes, we still need a #2 starter and a contact hitter. This is not a newsbreak but its hard for me to get excited about acquiring a mediocre (at best) bullpen piece. Especially since the bullpen is not our major malfunction.

When Eyre joins the team, the next move would seem to be for Happ to go back to Lehigh Valley. It makes sense since Happ needs to be active as starter.

Eyre, age 36, has only pitched 11 innings this year. He’s got 14 SO against only 4 BB. A lifetime ERA of 4.42 . The last three years he’s pitched in 86, 75 and 55 games. ERA’s 2.63, 3.38 and 4.13 in those years.

A good veteran pickup or an old tired arm? Guess time will tell but usually good pitching talent doesn’t get buried in the pen or sent to the minors.

Great, another re-tread player, another arm in the bullpen that we cant quite trust. You know it is August, because the Phillies start scouring the trash heap for the re-treads this time ever year, that will “put us over the top.” God forbid we make a deal for a starting pitcher that is worth his paycheck like Sabathia. No way! let’s wait until these bum players clear waivers and then we will make a trade for a pitcher that no other team wanted.

I am so fed up with the philosophy of the Phillies organization Let’s not better ourselves where we have glaring holes, let’s just pick up these worthless re-treads, because it won’t cost us anything.

The only way to get to this organization would be to stop going to the games, stop watching on tv, and stop buying merchandise, but nobody would do that, and to be honest with u, i wouldn’t either. This organization has us by the balls, because they could easily go all out and win this year, but instead we will stay where we are, while our main world series competitors, who were better then us beforehand, have upgraded their rosters.

I would have rather had Chad Bradford or Brian Giles, but Scott Eyre can help this team more than his ERA would suggest. He is better than Les Walrond, and certainly better than Mesa and Alfonseca were last year, although that’s not saying much.

that guy he had 18 appearances and 16 of the 18 were scoreless appearances. He got shelled for 9 runs on 1 and 1/3 inning or some shit like that and his ERA skyrocketed. He was also just come back from surgery on those outings too.

Let’s try not to forget that in 2006 J.C. Romero had an ERA over six. It’s the nature of relief pitching, you can’t really predict success or failure. Gillick has picked more than one guy off the scrap heap in his day.
