Todd Zolecki reports the Phillies have released pitcher Kris Benson.
Benson went 1-4 with a 5.52 ERA for AAA Lehigh Valley. He was acquired in February as a potential rotation slot for the middle of the season. His rehab was slow, and by the time he was ready to pitch, the Phillies had a pretty stacked rotation. Currently Benson would slot eighth or ninth on the Phils rotation cycle.
“We definitely think he is a starter,” said GM Pat Gillick. “He can’t be a bullpen guy. At this point, we can’t put him in the rotation, so in fairness to him … maybe the last month of the season he can hook on with another club and get an opportunity to start.”

I don’t mind losing him, but can we keep his wife?

Wow I wish we were so willing to cut our losses with other people. I actually went to one of the Lehigh Valley games that Benson started and thought he pitched really well. Though it’s pretty hard to mess with the rotation we have now. Everyone is pitching fairly well. So best of luck to Benson in the future.

Class move by the Phils in this one. Benson should now catch on with a team to give him a few starts in the show to see if he can still pitch to big league hitters.

But they let him go with no chance of catching on before Sept 1st. They must have determined he wasn’t going to be of use to them so why not let him go sooner? Sounds like they were hedging their bet.

Good move by the Phils…He has a 5.52 ERA in the minors he would of stunk even if they called him up.

Fred, I’m willing to bet they held off long enough to prevent other teams (i.e. New York) from getting him signed and on the active roster in time for the post season. Just a guess.

NO MATTER WHAT THE PHILLIES DO I STILL STICK BY MY PREDICTION LAST FEBRUARY-THE PHILLIES WILL BE THE 2008 WORLD CHAMPIONS. (NO MATTER HOW DIRTY DAVID WRIGHT TALKS AND NO MATTER HOW STUPIDLY JOSÉ REYES ACTS ON THE FIELD. REYES DEFINITELY NEEDS PROFESSIONAL HELP-HE IS TO BE PITIED.) I HAVE BEEN A PHILLIES FAN FOR 48 YEARS.
