Phils Show Spirit In 4-2 Win

The Phillies beat the Pirates, 4-2, thanks to some clutch hitting (finally) and some good pitching (of course).

Brett Myers was the good pitcher, going 7.2 innings and seizing the win after giving up just one run on five hits. He struck out six. The big story was how Myers reacted to being pulled from the game in the eighth inning. He jawed at Charlie Manuel while leaving the mound, and Manuel gave him a piece of his mind in the dugout. Sure, maybe Myers deserved a chance to finish his game (he had thrown 93 pitches), but the bottom line is it was great to see the fire in the dugout. Myers’ loudmouthing to Manuel proves key — this team has some sort of spirit; it had better come out.

The Phils struck early. Shane Victorino deposited a run-scoring single with Jimmy Rollins on third base — a triple, one of two by Rollins. Ryan Howard brought home the Flyin’ Hawaiian with a single of his own. But here’s the thing — if Rollins can hustle and bring his game like he did Satuday night, there’s no stopping this team.

Victorino brought home Rollins later in the game, and Greg Dobbs singled home Jayson Werth, giving the Phils insurance runs. JC Romero and Chad Durbin finished off the Pirates, with Durbin surrendering a run. No matter — this was an easy one, and that’s important.

I liked seeing Myers get all pissed off. It shows he has heart. All season long we have seen this guy that has this sad look on his face. All of a sudden, the fire is back! I thought he pitched really well and I was happy to see him get all hot headed when he got yanked! The man did his job tonight and the whole team needs to be fired up like that!

He’s too emotional for me, when shit gets tough I don’t think he can handle the heat. Every pitcher gets upset when they get pulled, he lost it. Look at Pat, he gets pulled nightly and doesn’t get in Charlies face. I don’t know, I like guys fired up like Rowand, not Myers. Just my 2 cents, everyone’s entitled.

yeah i hope he pitches good, so he has some value when he is traded in the winter.

It’s good to see somebody get fired up on the team like this…Thats what they need because most of the players have a laid back attitude.

good win….to say brett hasnt shown fire(or passion) is ignorance….he’s shown fire….but he hasnt come through till a few starts ago(he’s had the fire but not the control)…..hopefully he comes out with that same fire from now till the end of the season….without the players showing passion and “fire” this campaign is pretty much over…..go chase go pat go howard…..we need the middle of the lineup to contribute….say what you will about the rotation(which really doesnt look all too bad) but we need the men in the middle to produce…..between jimmy(who had an mvp game tonight) and shane(who has been the 2nd half mvp) we’ll have the runners on base…..they need to get them in…..thats the major hole right now….right handed bat….go phils

I didn’t catch the game. I had work tonight at my new job. I actually just got in. Being a bartender can be shitty, but it’s a good job to have money while in school. Needless to say, It seems like Myers pitched a fantastic game. I’m excited about that. I wonder how many people still want him to move to the pen and be our set up man? I’m glad he got up in Charlie’s face…someone needs to.

Another fine pitching display, but the offense is still worrisome. And I wanna see offensive fire from now through October.

Hey Jimmy! Good to see you! Where ya been all season?

As J-Roll goes, the Phillies go…

We all know that Charlie does some really perplexing things. I’m not sure what the circumstances were when he pulled Brett since I missed the game. It sounds like it wasn’t unreasonable to let him get the 3rd out of the 8th. According to a previous post, he had pitched 97 pitches to that point. Let him get through the inning.

Not necessarily a bad thing that Brett talked back to him. Perhaps the players have been questioning some of Charlie’s moves behind his back?

A good win but Myers might have lost some credit in the clubhouse, Rollins first triple was another display of poor baserunning and after making Snell throw a lot of pitches through 2 the offense allowed him to recover to go 6 innings and make a quality start for the Bucs.

It’s definately progress especially from the top of the order with both Rollins and Vic clearly coming to play.

Another example of Myers’ “me first” attitude. He had just given up a ground rule double and then the next batter hits a screamer. It was time for him to come out. Just give the ball to Charlie – no, he’s got to throw a hissy fit out on the mound. He deserved what he got from Charlie.

Offense looked better. J-Ro had a very nice night although he almost got caught not hustling on the first triple. Utley had another terrible night.

All in all a positive step forward.

Kudos to you Brett! I know some may view the Brett vs. Cholly show as a matter of disrespect, but I for one view it as a matter of passion. The dude wants to pitch! Finally! Brett had fire in his eyes, just like he did last year. Rewind back to two months ago. Compare Brett’s expression and attitude of yesterday vs. two months ago where he looked completely confused, befuddled, and even down right scared at times. He believes in himself right now, and that is an enormous part of being a successful pitcher. Our pitching of late has been flat out phenomenal!

Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy! That was J-Roll the MVP yesterday. And not just because he was 4-4 with 2 triples and 2 singles. Jimmy cranked up the attitude and passion yesteday it seemed to me. He is the spark plug on this team, and it showed in a game like yesterday. Now if we can only get ChUtley back on this planet, get his head in the game and get his focus on the game of baseball, the Phillies could do some real damage.

    GO PHILLIES!!!!!!

this is simply amazing. Jose Reyes pulls a tantrem on the field for coming out of a game early and he’s classless, yet Myers does the same thing and he’s passionate and emotional. it looks like the hypocracy is full effect.

Agreed. No reason to act like that on the mound. If you got a problem, take it up after the game. Great passion, but selfish out on the field.

I’m with Harry. I hope Myers pitches well the rest of the season. First, it will help us. Second, it will increase his trade value. We need to part ways with Myers and get the most we can in return.

Even though he appears to be pitching pretty well now, he’s still on the edge of effectiveness. He still has no control of his 4-seamer. It is all over the place. When he gets it over it is usually down the middle and gets hit very hard (like the double and the line drive out in the 8th.).

Also, even though he may be pitching decently now, God only knows what we will get next year. Instead of being like Dempster, working hard in the off season, and coming in ready for the switch from reliever back to starter, look what we got. I sure as heck don’t want to go through another season like this with Myers. He is too much of an unpredictable, unreliable head case for me.

was at Friday’s game. hope the Jeltz award went to Manuel. Blanton looked great – take him out for Taguchi??!!!

whoever said this team has no plan is right. all blame = ownership.

Utley looked lost at the plate. gotta be hurt….

is it assault to punch-out an inept owner?

Mets dude I think you’ll find most of us disagree with Brett’s antics after being lifted.

    1. I’m not a “Mets dude”, I’m just pointing out an inaccuracy.
    2. Yes, I should have mentioned that my post was directed at those who think Myers’ display last night was a good thing. If you think showing up your manager on the field is a good thing, regardless of how much you dislike the manager, you are quite misguided. And it is extremely hypocritical to bash opposing players for doing the same things you praise your own players for doing. It gives us Phans a poor reputation.

I seriously doubt Brett Myers is going anywhere. He will be making $12 million for 2009. While I do agree that I do not like any public display of controvery between teamates, I definently like Brett’s display of passion and his want to pitch. However, there certainly is a fine line between the two, especially when it gets aired out in public. Brett should have made a statement to Cholly about wanting to continue to pitch, then discussed it behind closed doors after the game. A huge part of pitching is confidence, and that is one element of Brett’s psychy that he has seemed to regain. Anyway, based on both of their statements after the game, it seems like this issue is over.

Myers is a piece of shit. Be a professional! Does he remember where he was a month ago? The Phils/Charlie stuck with him and didn’t give up on him. He probably went home and hit his wife.

I’m just glad the Myers and Blanton are both showing that they can get it done. Now if the offense can start scoring some runs…

The Reyes thing is under different circumstances. It was a new manager. He was doing hwat he thought was best for Reyes. Reyes flipped out. Myers and C Manuel know eachother well. I think it’ll give him even more confidence and motivation to pitch better. He’s going to want to continue to prove himself. Why all of this trade Myers talk? The dude is good enough to be our duel ace that we want if he’s pitching to his potential. I have faith that Myers has come around. I think that little stint in AAA really helped him. It made him realize that he needs to come to the game ready to pitch if he wants to stay on this team. I think the resigning of Lidge was the nail in the coffin. I also think he realized he can be a “rock star” as a starter. Hamels-Myers both on their A. game can be a devistating 1-2 punch for years to come. They are 2 guys that have potential to go 200+ innings with 200 k’s and a sub 3 ERA if they pitch to their potential. They just both have to learn to not give up the long ball, especially in the ballpark they pitch in.

Also, Myers coming back strong makes me excited for the playoffs. Myers can pitch with the best of them. I really think in a series against the Brewers and Cubs we can win. Honestly, I’m really hoping the Cards take the WC. I KNOW we can beat them in the 1st round. Our pitching would own theirs. I mean, come on…Loshe is their best pitcher. What a joke. I think Hamels-Myers-Blanton-Moyer can hold their own with Zambrano-Dempster-Harden-Lilly. I’d actually match Moyer up with Harden. They both usually can’t go more than 6 innings. Our bullpen is much better than the Cubs bullpen.

“Myers can pitch with the best of them.”

Come on, Myers has had two good games this year. Granted they’ve been the last two but to anoint him our ace or makes claims like “[he] can pitch with the best of them.” is just not realistic thinking.

He’s 62-56 over his career (20-23 the last three), and a career 4.46 ERA . Those stats don’t indicate a staff ace nor do they make him one of the best in the league.

Until he proves he can pitch like an ace on a consistent basic, he needs to keep his trap shut and ‘show us the money’.

I’m OK with a tantrum that is thrown behind closed doors. Fire is good. Public tantrums are childish, and I’ve had enough of Childish Brett. We need to see a more mature guy down the stretch.

Phil, your optimism floweth over. Cubs rotation vs. ours? I’d still take the Cubs, dude. Sure, ours might be able to keep us in those games, but they definitely have the edge in pitching if we go into a series. Don’t forget our offense is still broken. Last night was good, but before that we went 23 scoreless innings and got shut out over 12 by the crappy Pirates pitching staff. The Cubs, meanwhile, have a pretty good, balanced lineup of their own, so in a short playoff series, they’re definitely the better team going in.

Phil, please tell me where I can get a pair of those rose colored glasses you view the Phillies through because we could all use your optimism. How in the world do you think the Phillies bullpen is better than the Cubs? They just sent us Eyre who was their worst bullpen pitcher, and he’s supposed to be our #2 lefty behind Romero. Wood is every bit as good as Lidge, Gaudin is every bit as good as Durbin, and Marshall is every bit as good as Romero. And that’s all we have. They still have Marmol and Samardzija, who I would argue have nastier stuff than anyone in our bullpen. And match Moyer up with Harden all you want, but if Harden were a Phillie and Moyer were a Cub you’d be picking Harden over Moyer all day long.

And who cares if the Reyes thing was under difference circumstances? The point is both Reyes and Myers showed up their managers on the field, which is a major no-no. So if you are defending Myers for being passionate because he wanted to be left in the game, then you have to say the same thing about Reyes. You have to be fair.

I for one have had enough of Mr. Myers. Lest we forget, the night of his incident in Boston it was 1:30am when it happened. He was his way home from a bar when he was due to pitch a day game that very day. Not very responsible.

Now this is suppose to be the new, improved Myers. Looks to me like the same old spoiled, out-of-control Myers. Those anger management classes really helped.

I’d trade him for six-pack and it wouldn’t even have to be cold.

Let’s also not forget that 2 of his 3 starts have been against AAA lineups in the Nats and the Buccos.

Excellent win last night, but ian snell is REALLY bad. hes worse than i thought. jimmy rollins was OUTSTANDING last night, easily the best player on the field. he has not played to that level in an ENTIRE year. at least good to know he still can do that once in a while.

brett myers was outstanding as well. but from what i was able to see during and after the game, i think hes not going to be here next year. i think hes trying to get out of here.

from a certain point of view, i can understand him being pissed though. why bring romero in there if myers is cruising just to get one batter? myers couldve gotten him.

i lived in pittsburgh for 6 years, and i could only recognize two people in their lineup (jack wilson who was rested and freddy sanchez) from one year ago their lineup has turned over a lot and you can tell they dont even know who their cleanup hitter is going to be. theyre not a good test for him.

Let’s not forget Myers was in the minors a few short weeks ago. He has no right to run his mouth about being pulled. Everyone gets the hook. True professionals understand this.

The worse part in my mind was he continued to jaw at Charlie in the dugout. Instead of taking his medicine like a man he had to yak back at probably his strongest supporter. This again proves that Myers cares more about himself than he does about anything else. It’s always me, me, and more me. Time for a change of scenery for Mr. Hurt Feelings.

myers is a headcase, and even though he has pitched well as of late, i think he has worn out his welcome here. he’s has the mental makeup of a child and i personally have had enough of his antics.

i’d ship him off after the season, and hope we can get a prospect in return.

If Myers pitches like he has the last 3 starts the rest of the season I guarantee everyone of you will be singing a different tune. The difference between Myers and someone like Eaton is that Myers can actually pitch. He has good stuff. Top 5 curveballs in baseball. Jump all over me for it, I really don’t care, but it’s true. The thing about Myers curveball is that he needs to set it up with his fastball. He needs to locate that fastball to set up the curveball. Most of the season he wasn’t able to locate his fastball. He went down to the minors to work on it and succeeded. As bad as our offense has been, they’re just underachieving. It’s horrible to watch, but if they can hit on all cylinders in October they can be the most deadly line up in baseball…hands down. As far as our pitching staff goes. They’re probably overachieving, but I’d say the Phillies rotation is the most underrated in baseball. People outside of Philly still talk about how incredible our offense is and how bad our rotation is. To say our rotation is bad is pretty ridiculous. It’s actually quite good. We have the 3rd best ERA in the NL. To say our pitching can’t go to work against the Brewers or Cubs is dumb. 1st of all, we’d be playing the Brew Crew 1st round. Their bullpen is just bad. I mean horrible. Probably worse than the Mets. I’m positive our starting rotation can go head to head with the Brewers and keep us in a game. Then we get to their trash bullpen and win the game. I’m one of the most pessimistic people on this site aside form Mike T, Chris M, and Geoff, so my optimism is coming through because I know what this team can actually do and is capable of. They just need to come through the last 7 weeks of baseball and come to play.
