Rollins: Phils Fans Aren’t Supportive Enough

Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard were on “The Best Damn Sports Show Period” last night, and they were asked about playing in an environment like Philadelphia. Here’s what they said:

Chris Rose: Is it bad? It’s not that bad, is it?
Howard: In Philly? Umm …
Rollins: It can be.
Howard: It can be.
Rollins: It can be. I mean, there are times. Like, one of those cities, they — I might catch some flak for this but … they’re frontrunners. You know, when you’re doing good, they’re on your side. When you’re doing bad they’re completely …
Rose: But that’s a lot of cities.
John Salley: That’s called family. That’s called family.
Rollins: Yeah man, I hear you, but for example, Ryan’s from Saint Louis and — you know — Saint Louis, it seems like, they support their team, and they’re out there and they’re encouraging. In Philly — can’t be no punk.

It’s a shame, really, that we’re now at this stage with Rollins. After the lax play, benching and showing up late, Rollins has to say something like this.

First off, let’s put this out here: Rollins has a small point. At least from his perception. He’s been in Philly his entire career and has seen some bad teams. He’s seen some sparse crowds, and yeah, when the Phils stink, the crowds are sparse. It’s true — when the Phils play bad, the fans usually stay home. And yes, I do get a little miffed when most fans don’t clap before a big spot in a game. So he has a point there. Maybe we’re not like Cardinals fans, who do show up to every game and cheer (somewhat blindly) for their team every day.

But we’re not Cardinals fans. We haven’t had a recent world champion. We’ve only had one. We’re supporting the worst franchise in baseball history. Have a little perception from our side, Jimmy. Realize that we’re starving for a championship. Realize that in Boston, a city that today would be called one of loyal fans, no one went to storied Fenway Park in the early 1990s. Realize that in the Bronx, nobody went to Yankee Stadium during those lousy mid 1980s Yankee teams. Realize that 28 of the 29 big league cities are not Saint Louis.

But this isn’t about Saint Louis. It’s about a supposed leader who completely turned himself against his fanbase. This guy couldn’t buy a boo in 2007; this year he’s practically begging for us to hate him. Why? What the hell have we done to him? We’ve paid good money to see this team play. We’ve packed Citizens Bank Park to the brim more than 40 times in 2008 for this team. We throw down money to see a division champion defend its title. And what have the players given us? Whining. Lethargy. And this crap — from the supposed leader.

Hey, Jimmy, you make millions of dollars each year to play this grand old game. If I made millions to swing at 15 pitches and take a few grounders every day, I wouldn’t care one bit if the fans supported my team. And yet we do support you. We come out in droves. We want a champion, that’s the bottom line. Sure, Cardinals fans like having a good, friendly family time at Busch Stadium II. Like I said before, they’re the only franchise that has that type of fandom.

All we’ve ever wanted is for our team to show up everyday, play good baseball, and hopefully win about 60 percent of its games. Like Boston, like New York, if you make the playoffs, we’ll be clapping for every single moment. But we’re not there yet. And we might not get there in 2008, mainly because of you, Jimmy. You’re not playing well. And that’s the issue. Ever figure that when you played well in 2007, we supported your every move?

Anyway, Jimmy is asking to leave Philly. Maybe he can follow in Scott Rolen’s path, get away from “pressure” and indulge in “Baseball Heaven.” And if so, that’s sad — we always … always thought he was tougher than that, better than that.

Don M, I’m sure you’ll buy my Rollins jersey. You sound like you’re a Mets fan pretending to be a Phillies fans to start fights.

I said this earlier in the thread. I bought my Rollins jersey 5 years ago. I bought it because he was my favorite player. I’d go to the vet and cheer for him with noone there. What he said insulted me. Whether what he said was true or not(it’s true for a lot of these douche bag college kids that go to Phillies games to get drunk) you don’t say it becasue it’s isolating the real fans.

yeah hes gotta be smarter. the real fans are always going to be there. i remember taking the train into phildelphia in high school and walking up to the window 5 minutes before gametime and buying a 700 level seat at the vet for like no more than 10 bucks. you could immeditely walk down to the first level and get a seat very close to the action, usually in the first 20 rows. noone was there at all. and theyd be horrible, get pounded by barry bonds with the pirates or barry bonds early giants-era. youd take the walk around to left field just to harass barry bonds and get on his case. make fun of his shoes when hes standing right in front of you and turn around and laughs because noones there and he can hear you.

definitely have some fond memories of that time, even though they sucked.

Bonds left the Pirates well after the time you got out of high school.

Has anyone been to Jimmy Rollins website? What a tool. He is so self-centered.

I have been to other cities.. its nice to travel..

Jimmy Rollins “is not a very good defensive SS, he is an average defensive SS” Good arguement there.. no point in talking about it..

If nobody wants to see the logic behind what Rollins said… I’ll gladly step aside and let you all continue to agree with each other about how Philly fans are always so supportive of their athletes, win or lose..

Just do me one favor…take out the word “front-runners” from Rollins answer, and tell me that you don’t agree with him.

“You know, when you’re doing good, they’re on your side. When you’re doing bad they’re completely …”

Instead of talking about that quote, its just turned into coming up with weak arguements that he isn’t a good player..

Yeah, I think my theory on Don M being a Mets fan is right.

Phil, real fans should know exactly what he is talking about… the Phillies this year are the hottest ticket in town because they won the NL East last year, and the Eagles aren’t favored to win the SuperBowl..

Last year.. end of the season series vs. the Braves… THOSE GAMES WEREN’T SOLD OUT… they got like 38,000…. but then the final series against the Nationals was..and then people went crazy going into this year..

Im not sure how constantly defending my team, and generally giving solid reasoning behind my opinions makes me a Mets fan?? I always thought it makes me sound like a Phillies fan that prefers to stay positive instead of knock this team every chance I get…

Like you said.. all those drunk college kids and stuff… he has a point.. thats all im saying.. I don’t want to see him traded because he’s one of the best SS in baseball, and I knew that his comment (even though TRUE) would set people off today.. when real fans know exactly what he’s talking about.

I think the trade talk is a little ridiculous. Although it seems with most posts I make here, some posters decide to talk about trades.

Amen.. I admit that I go to the extreme of defending the team maybe even more than I really believe.. but it is usually simply to attempt to counter fans (mainly Geoff) and the craziness that calls for “blowing up the team” every time they lose a game or a series..

    Like my point from earlier:
“Your team isn’t going to win everygame.. but a few people on this blog DEMAND A CHAMPIONSHIP right now.. while at the same time, they want to trade the few players that have been responsible for us being a good team the past few years.”

GEOFF… you will like this one.. Daily News from Rich Hofmann, Eagles training camp attendence down about 50% (what about all those #1 Eagles fans that BLEED GREEN??).. its a short article, hits home

yeah i blended two stories together. bonds left the pirates after their run in 1992 i think. i went down there A LOT because it was so cheap.

Do you really think Rollins is one of the best SS in the game? Take off your home team blinders and look around the league there are plenty of SS’s that put up better numbers than he does on normal years. Last year was a career year and he will never get those number again stop kidding yourself he is an above average SS but he is NOT one of the best in the game

well it doesnt, because i was never and will never be an eagles fan. i grew up with the flyers and the phillies. im a fan of people like westbrook and some of their players, but never of the organization as a whole.

so if i ever start saying how great the eagles are i expect to be called out, but i dont think youll ever hear that out of me.

I am a huge Phillies fan. I am so tired of these athletes. I love Utley because he does his job and shuts his mouth. Rollins put the knife through me with those comments. We got behind him last year and now this. We spend our hard earned money to watch these games. He should kiss our butts. He has been terrible this year and I am tired of it. Ship him and Howards 150ks out of town. We dont need them.

TRADE HIM….. Meanwhile – I was at opening day this year, and I believe this nutjob received chants of encouragement for his MVP by default from last year, so I think he needs to shut his trap….. Can’t stand it when someone playing like they’re in an offensive coma has the right to complain about his fans, when we’re still showing up at games and putting money in his and the organization’s pocket…. I’m supporting this team win or lose, but it does not mean I’m going to whistle a happy tune when they’re playing like crap…

At MetsBlog, Matt Cerrone says he agrees with Rollins, opening the door for his posters to call us scumbags. How original.

I agree with Rollins as well, because he has his point, and it’s vaild. But the fact that he says it is what irritates me as a fan. That he would paint with such a broad brush. That he would unleash these comments in the middle of a season where an underperforming team is losing its grip on first place and the hearts of their fans. It’s foolish.

It is a good thing that the Phils drafted a shortstop this year in the first round. He may be seeing some big league action sooner than expected if this nonsense continues.

right on PtheBLovesTheBallGirls. hes one of the better defensive shortstops, no doubt, but still, the top half of them in baseball are all about the same. just look at the defensive numbers. theyre all bunched together.

Short stops in mlb as good or better than Jimmy.
    1. Jeter
    2. Young
    3. Hanley
    4. Reyes
    5. Escobar
    6. Theriot
    7. Tejada
    8. Wilson
    9. Hardy
    10. Furcal
    11. Tulowitzki
    12. Drew

    That’s more than 1/3

thats right on phil. there all about the same defensively and some of them are better all aorund players. like hanley.

Not at all. Haley is the best short stop in baseball.

Thank you Jimmy! This is what Philly needs. They need to calm down and stop being such jerks to other fans and players. No teams or fans respect the Philadelphia fans. Who can respect people who whine, bitch and fight constantly.

Hey guys what do you think og McNabb and the eagles? Do you think Jaws should come and hang out with them? Talk about life and angles and things like that? Hey do you guys belive in angles?

I agree with Tim. Also does anyone think this could also be about money??? 7 for $49 million is cheap

You posted that on another thread Don M. This is a Phillies board not an Eagles board. I hate football. Shut up.

I see both sides of this issue. Rollins won an MVP, and everybody goes through slumps and bad years and needs to be given time to work it out without the fans calling for their heads. After winning an MVP, he needs to be cut even more slack than normal. That said, I’m much more inclined to cut a guy slack if he’s putting forth effort without results than if he’s clearly just not putting forth the same effort, hustle, and persistance that clearly made his previous season what it was.

We Philly fans are a bit harsh, and we are a little quick on the trigger finger when an athlete’s performance begins to degrade. But, that’s what we’ve been conditioned to do. Find me another city that’s been so scorned by its former athletes…TO, Lindros, Rolen, etc. Find me another city that has such reason to lose hope. The Detroit Lions are consistently TERRIBLE, but Detroit has the Pistons and Red Wings to look forward to. The Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t been good in years, but the Steelers just won the Superbowl 2 years ago. The L.A. Clippers were the perennial joke of the NBA, but L.A…..well, they’ve got plenty to cheer for.

Deep down, we all knew that Rollins would turn on us. All of our athletes do. It’s a downward spiral by which our athletes turn on us, we get more bitter from it, and our bitterness gets taken out on the athletes when they underperform. All we want is a championship, and like several folks have pointed out on here, if Rollins (or any other) sticks with us and wins a championship, they will be immortalized in Philadelphia. Currently, all we have to cheer for is a fictional boxer…at least he was a champ!

Hey guys do you think we need a power WR like TO? What do you think about trading for Randy Moss of Kyle Clerk? I think we need a better run game Westbrook is going to get hurt and Jaws can not even run anymore

Jaws wants out of ESPN, he wants back in an eagles uniform theyt are nicer then the ones he wore right guys?

Did he not watch his team play the first half of the year? Mets fans were totally level headed; didn’t jump off the bandwagon at all. No one booed.

One of my favorite baseball moments, Billy Wagner spends an entire off season bitching about the Phillies’ fans. Signs with the Mets. First game, blown save, the boos rain down from the heavens.

Oh god…I am going through my closet and I have one thing to wear. My Rollins jersey. What a horrible day to be wearing that shit. Oh yeah, that’s how much Phillies pride I am. I wear my jersey out all the time, most fans just have it hanging in their closet for a game.

    Jeter, Young, Hanley Ramirez

are HANDS DOWN BETTER THAN JIMMY ROLLINS..

    the rest aren’t..

Furcal (10 pts higher carrer batting Avg, worse fielder),
Hardy (lower Avg. and worse fielder),
Jack Wilson (lower Avg. and worse fielder)
Escobar this year is hitting .281 with 12 errors compared to Rollins’ 5 errors..
Tulo was GREAT last year, but has a .237 avg this year, and 6 errors in 61 games..
Stephen Drew (lower career Avg and worse fielding percentage)

some of those guys migh be better than Rollins in a few years.. Escobar, Tulo, Drew.. but they aren’t yet.. so Rollins is still among the top SS in baseball..

J-Roll may not be having a stellar year with the bat, but his glove-work has been pretty impeccable. He had the highest fielding percentage of any NL shortstop last time I checked a couple days ago. If he continues this way, he will win another gold glove this year.

I among many others seem to forget this at times especially after the expectations he created with his MVP season hitting.

to Don M #2.. I wish I had that much to say about Jaws..and ESPN all the time.. you’re pretty cool, and original..

Thats why I suggested to Tim before that people should have to be registered or have only 1 name they can post under.. It seems to be the same things about me asking how the Eagles will do… and Geoff doesn’t spell his name with the letter J.. maybe funny the first time, but not the 20th..

I’m a diehard Phillies fan who was 12 in 1964 but who has lived in L.A. for my adult life. I’m going to the game tonight and I hope Myers has the stuff. I always defend Phillies fans because they’re knowledgeable and because at least when I was a kid they always applauded an opposing pitcher who was pitching a good game when he came to bat. The boos go with the territory — pros like Rollins should understand that, and most players – including Jimmy at other times – say that they like to play for fans who pay attention.

But Phila fans should wonder about something — is it a coincidence that they’ve gone 25 years w/o a championship and they are the most critical fans? The fans say they have a right to boo because the teams lose, but maybe there’s a connection. You notice it from 3,000 miles away — the negativity that comes out of Philadelphia is pretty depressing.

I agree with a previous post that perhaps Jimmy thinks he should be given a pass this year because of his MVP status last year. Let’s see how this would play out in other professions-Surgeon to patient:”Sorry I replaced the wrong knee, but my last 20 surgeries went really well, so could you cut me some slack?” Or lawyer to client:”I won my last several cases, thought that would carry me thru yours, sorry.” Or my husband, an optician, could explain to a patient that even though they can’t see out of their new glasses, the last 50 patients were really pleased, so give me a standing ovation and get out of my face.

frank..i think theres some kind of intangible connection there. i noticed it when i was away. as soon as one bad thing happens in the game the crowd negatively buzzes and you can feel it start to build up. sometimes it goes away but sometimes they keep doing it and it causes the team to meltdown in the span of an inning.

people also will go out and be like: theyre going to lose tonight. my dad does that. with the flyers, every single playoff game, EVERY SINGLE ONE, he said: theyre gonna lose tonight. and i kept saying: shut the fuck up, theyre better than this team, theyre going to win.

the difference, i feel, is that when you know theyre better than the teams theyre playing you feel confident that theyll win. when you start saying theyll lose it annoys people because nobody wants to hear that before the event happens.

with the phillies, i feel that they are actually simply not as good as a lot of these teams. theyre underachieving, yes, but they just cant compete with a team like the dodgers or the AL teams consistently enough.

the negative magic also has the ability to turn a good team into a “choking” team. causing them to play uncharacteristicallly bad. weve seen that before.

i still maintain though, that my approach is meant to focus solely on the organizations ability to put the best team on the field/ice/court every year. if i feel like thayve dont the best they can to put the best team out there, and that team STILL falls short then i wont really be mad at them. see the flyers of last season. they did all they could to assemble a top-notch team, thats fine. build on that.

with the phillies and especially the trash eagles, i always get the impression that the organization and the players are not doing the best they can to put a top-notch team on the field. when i see that, im going to call them out on it and say theyre not good enough because its obvious.

if i think therye good enough, ill say it and let it be known at each step of the way as i did with the flyers this past season. if not, then i wont.

there is some kind of negative magic thinkg that drags the teams down, though, to a certain extent. but if you put a good enough team out there it wont matter and theyll overcome it.

    jimmy rollins,

we cheer when you do well, and we boo when you do poorly. if we didn’t boo you when you played bad, that would show we didn’t care. we boo, but we still continue to support the team by buying tickets, purchasing jerseys, showing up to phillies events, etc.

jimmy, you better get your head on straight, and pick up your game before you generalize the entire phillies fanbase.

also, i agree with frank gruber. we have gone through 100 combined seasons with no championships, so i think we have the right to boo anybody we want. i can’t blame you for putting a product on the field that doesn’t have what it takes to win a championship, this or any other year, but u are a professional, so act like one – run out balls, show up on time, and keep your big mouth shut.

    Geoff, you stated it perfectly:

He’s starting to really annoy me. He doesn’t run ground balls out anymore. He shows up late for a game and then whines about being benched for breaking one of only TWO of the manager’s rules. Suck it up, be a man, and play the damn game for which you are being payed millions. If I put down 40 of my hard-earned dollars for a ticket, I expect to see all-out effort, ALL of the time. Not just when you feel like hustling. Rollins and Howard are starting to get under a lot of people’s skin. I can’t wait to see the response next Tuesday at 7 pm when Dan Baker introduces J-Stroll. (I wonder if the Rangers would be interested in a Jimmy Rollins for Michael Young swap this off-season? Hmm.)

like the sixers, even though i dont like the nba, and dont pay much attention, went out of their way to spend all they can afford to spend to keep lou williams, iguodala, and bring in elton brand. that tells your fans that youre making a commitment to do everything you can to win.
