Victorino Provided Sparks In July

July is over, which means Shane Victorino’s hot month has ended. Let’s take a look at the Flyin’ Hawaiian’s stats over the month:
G – 25
PA – 113
H – 35
R – 20
HR – 7
RBI – 20
AVG – .333
OBP – .381
SLG – .619
OPS – 1.000
It matches up well with his May numbers — .322/.389/.466, except he was much more powerful this month. But look close — in March/April, Vic hit .224 and the Phils went 15-13. In May Vic hit .322 and the Phils went 17-12. In June Vic hit .235 and the Phils went 12-14. And here in July he hit .333 and the Phils went 15-10.
Dare I say how Victorino goes, so do the Phillies?

I think he’s the Rollins of this season.

I would like to take a moment to say that since charlie pulled him aside and talked to him, and since his name has appeared in trade rumors for months, he has really turned himself around. he was atrocious in april and now hes on track.

I think he has had a heck of a month and I just hope he keeps it up. I have a lot of faith still in Gillick. His best work is usually done through the waiver wire trades. Remember thats how we got Moyer, Lohse, Iguchi, Conine. I think he’ll add a pitcher and maybe a bat, but that 4th tier starter talk really had me puzzled. Why was he searching for a fourth tier starter? We have about six of those. I hope not like Paul Byrd either.

Did anybody see Benson’s recent numbers with the Iron Pigs? Not bad, last night 7 ip 5 hits 1er, 5 runs in his last 20 innings. If he could start drawing some attention, maybe we can get him through waivers for like a nice right handed bat off the bench that can play third in case Feliz is more hurt than they are saying.

Somebody suggested Beltre yesterday IF Pedro Feliz’s back was going to be an issue all season… I wonder if he’ll make it to waivers since they might look to dump salary

Great analysis. Any chance you mess with a good thing and flipflop Rollins and Vic?

i think you keep victorino at #2, that’s his ideal spot in a batting order. he’s absolutely the man, and along with rollins are the machines that get this offense going. when both of them are on their game, by the time the heart of the order gets up they don’t even need to get base hits to get RBIs. it’s good to see some games like that lately, where both of them are hitting well.

i’m really happy to see Shane playing this well. he’s always hustling, just a matter of time a guy like this breaks out of a slump

I agree, Shane is playing great. I was holding my breath through the weeks up to the trade deadline, I am glad those were just rumors and we didnt get rid of him, he has been key in getting this team back on track.

Does anyone else project Victorino having a stellar career year in a Phillies uniform in like 2009, 2010, or 2011? Something like.
AVG- .310
RBI- 80
R- 130
HR- 20
OBP- .400
SLG- .600
SB- 40

Phil it is funny you bring that up, because earlier he did not hit any HRs, but I thought he had 20 HR power

I always felt it was a head-scratcher every time Victorino’s name came up in trade talks, as if the Phils thought they could just keep plugging center-fielders in and out of the lineup. The old adage is you have to be strong up the middle (that could go in any number of ways of course) but with Rollins, Utley and Victorino, 3/4ths of that adage is set. Maybe when Marson gets up to the bigs the Phils will be 4 for 4 on that. I just hope we all look back on this deadline and say “thank god they didn’t trade player, x,y, and z” when the Phils win the pennant, instead of asking what the hell they did all day yesterday….

Good point Matty. I got in an argument with someone over what you start a franchise with and I said middle fielder…catcher, ss, 2b, or cf. Of course they said pitcher, but that’s just not true. Pitching is the most important thing, but you can’t start a franchise with someone that starts every 5 days. I guess you could make a good argument for a closer, but still…I’d rather have the middle guys. Yeah, if Marson pants out next year our middle field will be dominant for the next 3 years.

he doesnt hit far back enough to hit 80rbi unless he has an mvp season and does what rollins did his mvp year. i dont think hes THAT good though. hes been very solid as of late but hes not an mvp candidate.

Rollins didn’t get an MVP because of his numbers, he got it because he battled through and helped his team overcome injuries and doubt while backing a bold prediction he made in the pre season. Go look at Wright’s numbers last year. They destroy Rollins numbers.

but if victorino put up those numbers from the 2-hole, the rollins numbers, hed be in the mvp mix that season.

Richie: If Benson can be traded and anybody wants him, I would totally do it. Benson and a prospect would probably get us a decent right handed bat off the bench.

philsphan noone is taking Benson.
Geoff, those numbers aren’t MVP caliber numbers. Look at A-Rod’s MVP campaign last year compared to Rollins, or the numbers I just gave you from Victorino’s career year. Victorino’s career year was very close to Rowands year last year. Less homers less RBI’s more stolen bases. You’re right though, he’ll probably only have 70 RBI’s in his career year.

Just off of the top of my head, dollar for dollar Shano is probably the best value in the outfield in MLB. Of course his major intangibles are the amount of ground he covers in left center to right center, his leadership and flat-out hustle all of the time. You never see Shano dogging it on any play – offensively or defensively.
GO PHILLIES!!!!
