Headline: Take care of business in the capital
The Major Players: Chase Utley, Kyle Kendrick, Tim Redding, Ryan Madson
The Venue: Nationals Park, Washington D.C.
The Number: 1 game behind (Mets)
Jayson Werth and Co. put together a nice win to split a crucial four-game set with the Cubs. Now it’s onto Washington for a three-gamer with the Nationals, whom the Phils have beaten soundly much of the season (8-4). And if you’re watching this Labor Day spectacular, look for Phillies Nation to be covering major ground at Nationals Park. Today is our annual bus trip to our Nation’s Capital. As you read this sentence, we’re outside Nationals Park enjoying some brews, good food and a lot of good friends.
Mad River: With Chad Durbin going two innings yesterday, and Kendrick not one to go deep into games, Ryan Madson might see some time today. Despite recent struggles, 12 of his last 14 appearances have been scoreless.
Werth The Playing Time: Jayson Werth had a 7-for-13 series in Chicago. His 2008 numbers: 21 HR, 56 RBI, .529 SLG. All career bests.
The Redd Line: These guys have faced Redding a lot this season. Chase Utley: 5-for-10. Ryan Howard: 1-for-10. Shane Victorino: 4-for-11. Jimmy Rollins: 1-for-12. Pat Burrell: 2-for-10. Pedro Feliz: 1-for-7.
Not The Light! Part IV!: The Phillies are 18-22 in daytime.
Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (11-7) 4.83 ERA
Nationals: Tim Redding (9-8) 4.54 ERA
Gametime: 3 p.m. EST
Weather: 85, sunny
Lineup:
MLB TV
MLB Gameday Audio
MLB Gameday
Your gameday beer: As some of us drink properly on a air-conditioned bus and at Nationals Park, you can dive into Extra Special Ale from Yards, our own very popular Philadelphia brewery. It’s a perfect drinker for Labor Day — not too light, not too strong, but extremely tasty with loads of hops. You’d better be grilling today — it goes with anything you put on the grill, from burgers to dogs to ribs to steak. Do it up.
Go Phillies!

danny, you got me. Fred apparently has a hard-on for him though and seems to think that Burrell is equally as “terrible” and we should compain about him like we do Eaton. If he paid attention, he’d see that Burrell’s average is at or near his career average, so he’s really not having a terrible year at all – he’s having an average year (.250-.260, 30 HR). His RBI’s will be a little down this year, but after spending more time in the 5 slot, he’s had fewer RBI opportunities.

Condrey seems to have innings where he is great….and others not so much. Thankfully this was a great one.

Jamie, I agree with you. I think Burrell has done far more positive and helped us win far more games then vice versa.

Eaton has been one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball, Burrell has been one of the best 5-hole hitters.

Guys, go easy on me. Last year I was the best starting pitcher on the team after Hammels. And I just convinced Cholly to start me against the Mets on Friday. I always did okay against them.
I had a few Ks in the minors too.

My dearest Adam, if you are going to reference yourself as last year’s second best pitcher on the staff, at least learn to spell the name of the staff “ace” properly. It’s “Hamels” not “Hammels”

So hitting .250 deserves 14 mil? All the trash you guys talk you wouldn’t dare say any of it to Eaton or Rollins or Ruiz or whomever’s face. Jamie if you were such a great hitter how come we’re not watching you today? Eaton would stick a fastball right in your ear.

oh man, that was terrible. that was right over the middle of the plate.
fred..if the phillies had anyone else to throw out there theyd let burrell go, but they dont and everyone else out there is either more expensive or not as good as burrell on the FA market. or theyre old.
also, everybody knows the yankees are going to go after ryan howard in the offseason

David, he pitched in A and AA. His ERA was a shade over 7.00 if I remember. You guys want him?

I try to be consistent in my opinions. But when idiotic comments are made, i.e. drunken dads could hit Eaton, get real. Good or bad, these guys are far above our talent level.

These cameramen in Washington are awful.
Every ball that is hit, the caera is zoomed out as far as it can go and frantically looks for the ball.

Fred, I think that’s a legit question that we’ll have to wait and see how it gets answered. I’d like to see Burrell back, but certainly not for $14-17 million.

SJ Mike, I was hoping it wouldn’t turn into one of his “really bad” ones.
Fred, I would hope you realize that when we talk about the little league team and beer league that we are kidding. At least a little. Eaton couldn’t even get 19 year olds out at Class A, but if we fielded a Phillies Nation team and faced him, I’m sure he’d look like Roger Clemens. I would expect him to. But at the same time, he can’t cut it in the minors let alone the bigs.

i think hes willing to give them a discount to an extent. maybe down to 10-12mm as opposed to 14-17mm. 2- 3 years 10-12mm isnt so bad. theyre clearly not going to give howard his money. howard is going get get a raise to 14mm next year. they wont go for that and wont want to go through arbitration again. hes gone.

Burrell I think would be best off at a 2 year with a 3rd year option at what Geoff said. I think that’d be reasonable.

Pat is going to want to get paid, but he’s also going to want to stay in Philly. If he tries to get $15-17 MM per over 4 years, I say no. I don’t think many teams would give him that number. If he’s willing to go for $13-$14 for a 3 year deal, or even a 3 year with an option year or two at the end that triggers based on performance or club options, I’d be a little more willing to do it. If he turns down a decent Phils offer, he may be Kyle Lohse. However, given the list of free agent outfielders next year, Pat’s certainly the top of the list, so his chances of finding a home are much better.

Geoff, I agree that Howard will want more than his $10 mil, but the Phils aren’t going to want to give him more than $11 or $12. Howard will try to get $15 or something, but I don’t think the Phils would be against going to arbitration again. After all, his numbers are lower this year than last, so they at least have that argument to make.

So what stat should we look at? His career .258 BA? His career .358 OBP? His career .458 SLG? I don’t understand from those stats what makes him worth 14 mil.

but jamie, they go by service time heavily. in order to not get a raise howard would have to be doing much worse than hes doing this year
