Gamenight: Nationals (59-99) At Phillies (89-70)

Headline: With a win, postseason in reach
The Major Players: Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Joe Blanton, Shane Victorino, JC Romero
The Venue: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pa.
The Number: 1 game ahead, NL East
Joe Blanton takes the hill. The Phillies are a game up with three to play. The Mets get the Marlins (SNY), while the Brewers play the Cubs (ESPN).
After dropping two games to the Braves, the Phillies find themselves still in first place, but with very little breathinr room. In fact, the space between them and the Mets is dangerously tight. Tonight the Nationals are in for the final three games, and just like last year, it’ll take two-of-three to get the job done.
The good guys will face Collin Balester, who has had spotty success against the Phils. He has allowed five earned runs in 13 innings against the good guys, striking out nine while walking just one. He will walk a couple batters per game, so the Phils need to be more patient against the 22-year-old right-hander.
The offense was miserable in the final two Atlanta games. They scored just four runs against Mike Hampton and Jo-Jo Reyes, among others. They seemed to press a little more, sensing the magnitude of their close accomplishments. Now is not the time to press. If they play light, smart ball as they did Friday, the big hits will come and they’ll win. Looking at last year’s triumph, this team seems to seize the moment when they need to.
Two hitters who could carry the mantle against Balester: Chase Utley (HR in six at bats) and Shane Victorino (3-for-6).
If the Phillies win, it’s win No. 90. If the Nats lose, it’s loss No. 100. We’d like both things to happen tonight.
Phillies: Joe Blanton (8-12) 4.79 ERA
Nationals: Collin Balester (3-6) 4.83 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 66, rain
Lineup: Rollins/Werth/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Victorino/Dobbs/Ruiz/Blanton

Your gamenight beer: So for the final three games, we’re coming back, full-circle, and presenting the big three favorites from the Yuengling Brewery. It’s been a long, strange journey with beer this season, but it’s always nice to come back to a familiar sight. So here’s Yuengling Porter. In honor of Blanton, our own porter of a baseball player, we hand this out with a helping of beef stew. If you’re not at the park, enjoy this slow and root, root, root for your Philadelphia Phillies.
Go Phillies!

Not particularly impressive from Blanton again.

I rigged up my mini portable TV that I use as a video monitor (I’m a freelancer) to the debate and have my big TV on the game.

I’m trying to balance all 3 baseball games, the UConn football game and now the debate. Not complaining though.

My portable video monitor I use for my field shoots is only 2 inches, so that’s why baseball is on the bigger TV. The debate’s audio is more important then the video.

I’m a St. John’s b-ball fan. I probably shouldn’t tell anyone that.
Give Chollie credit, by pinch running Bruntlett for Burrell, he gave the Phils a run. Bruntlett broke up the double play. So props to Charlie.

The Mets are down 4-1 and the fish have two runners on and no out. Manuel is using his third pitcher of the inning.

Did anybody see The Onion’s article about “Carlos Voltron.”
It’s hilarious.

Would you guys rather see the Brewers as the wild card winner, or the Mets? I think I already know the answer, just throwing it out there…

Jamie, for me the Brewers, just because from our point of view, we’d match up far better against them in my opinion.

Mike, I’m on the same page as you. I think we can handle them a little better, although the Mets pitchers are a complete disaster compared to the Brewers.

I think I’d want to see the Dodgers, so maybe the Mets getting the wild card wouldn’t be too bad of a thing.

that’s a funny article SJ mike!
marlins have the bases loaded 1 out, Uggla up. It’s 4-1 already.

damn, Uggla hit a scorching line drive but it was right to David Wright. A few feet to the left or right, 3 runs score. Damn.

Jamie, and I know I’m thinking ahead, but as exciting as it would be, the thought of having to potentially face the Mets in the postseason scares me just because no matter how you slice it, they would play with a higher form of emotion. It’d be a series that could literally spend either team who goes to the World Series.
I just like the matchups with the Brewers better.
But don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves. Win tonight, win tomorrow, win Sunday, worry about all that come Monday.

Main St. Cafe is Willi Brew. Same place, but nobody knows what the hell to call it. I live in Colchester (Rt. 66 to 85) and work in Norwich. Nothing like Willi Brew in the area, though I do like Colchester’s Cafe on Main (nice tap with about 25 beers).

Griffin, I saw that article posted on Metsblog.com.
The ending paragraph is what made me lose it laughing, that Aaron Heilman came in to give up 618 runs.

Man, how nice would it have been if Sweet Lou would have played someone from above AA ball last night and beat the Muts? We could have had a chance at clinching tonight. Ugh. Oh well, hopefully the scores hold tonight and we can have a shot tomorrow instead.
