Headline: Go Phils: Sweep possible with win
The Major Players: Cole Hamels, Pat Burrell, Pedro Feliz, Ryan Howard, Johan Santana, Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran
The Venue: Shea Stadium, Queens, N.Y.
The Number: 1 game behind (Mets)
Jamie Moyer was awesome in a big win over the Mets this afternoon. Now it’s up to the ace. Cole Hamels goes against Johan Santana in the final game of the season between the Phils and Mets. It’s live, it’s national, it’s big. Get on board, fans.
A Whole Lot Of Johan: Johan Santana has pitched 29 innings against the Phillies, more than double any other team this year for Johan. The Phils have scored 10 runs off Santana in those innings.
A Whole Little Cole: Conversely, Cole Hamels has just faced the Mets once. The Mets got four runs off him in just seven innings.
At A Car-Loss: Despite an RBI single this afternoon, Carlos Ruiz has just three RBI since July 23.
Spotlight: This is the Phils’ fourth time on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball in the last six weeks.
The Last One: Unless there’s a playoff rematch, the Phillies and Mets are playing their final game in 2008. Seems like only yesterday …
Righty Tighty: Righties in to face Santana. Pat Burrell is in left field, and Pedro Feliz is at third base. Jayson Werth hits third.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (12-8) 3.01 ERA
Mets: Johan Santana (12-7) 2.71 ERA
Gametime: 8:05 p.m. EST
TV: ESPN
Weather: 73, clear
Lineup: Rollins/Utley/Werth/Howard/Burrell/Victorino/Feliz/Coste/Hamels

Your gamenight beer: Alright. It’s the night game. It’s big time. With the eyes of the world on the Phils and Mets, time to go deep. Here’s Otter Creek Stovepipe Porter, a dark, very fulfilling experience with coffee flavor bursting about. Enjoy some honey-barbecue-glazed ribs with this. It’s time to eat well and enjoy this awesome matchup.
Go Phillies!

thats a product of victorino playing too shallow…i know he’s fast, but thats an example of playing shallow burning you.

I agree SJ Mike. 2 games back with 19 to go is certainly more manageable than last year. But I think the Phils got to go at least 13-6 the rest of the way to really make it work

Season isn’t over yet. There’s still 3 weeks of baseball left and anything can happen.

Phillies are a good team. No question about that! But the Mets are just a little better. But the Phillies have kept it close all year so you have to give them credit for that!

13-6 probably is not going to do it. You are then counting on the Mets to go 11-8, and that’s just for a tie. They will then need to go 10-9 for us to win with 13-6. That ain’t happening. I see the mets going at least 13-6 with their schedule. Probably 14-5.

Just don’t go claiming victory in the division until you actually have it. Overconfidence can kill a team, just like last year.

Hater – you got it so wrong. Mets are team with some luck recently, but no class. Let me tell you what is about to happen – you can write it down and check back here in 3 weeks.
The Mets are going into their locker room tonite, after this one game, and will celebrate…CELEBRATE as if they won something. Not all the players, but the idiots like Reyes, Beltran, Reyes, Easley, Reyes and Delgado. (I said Reyes 3 times on purpose – there is no shallower player in baseball). “Oh we got the monkey off our backs, etc.” They’ll treat it like the won a playoff game. Meanwhile, the Phils will start a new winning streak…5 of 7, while the Mets will start losing…to the Nationals, to the Braves.
We’ll see come the last week of the season, when the Mets have to beat the Cubs and Marlins.

Dobbs, man. One swing doesn’t tie it. Why are you swinging at the first pitch like that?

Bottom line is Phils needed a big game from Hamels tonight and didn’t get it.

The Mets will not win another 11 games this season. Count on that. The Marlins, Braves and Nationals will continue to bring it just as hard against them and they’ll surprise.

Sit down Jimmy.
Aren’t the Mets supposed to choke in this spot?
Isn’t Delgado supposed to be done?
Isn’t Rollins supposed to be outshining Reyes?
Isn’t this the year Hamels was to reach Cy Young form?
Aren’t the Phillies going to win 100 games?
Isn’t Utley poised to make it an MVP three-peat?
Isn’t this going to be Pat Burrell’s career year?
And hey…Mike Schmidt….
aren’t the Phillies supposed to be better than the Mets?
God have Mercy on Philadelphia…a town that now doubts what it was absolutely sure of!

AC in NJ, Mets are team with some luck recently, but no class? You must be crazy. The Phillies like I said are a good team. I agree with that. But the mets lucky? They owned the Phillies this year. They have more talent, better starting rotation and better offense its not luck its a FACT! No class I think you mean when Victorino took out McCann at home or Utley taking out the catcher last week. Is the saying “if you can’t beat them then try to beat them up?” And atleast reyes has more class then Rollins and reyes shows up in time! And he is not even the spokesman like Rollins. And as far as losing to the Nationals and Braves only the Phillies do that. By the way.
PUT IN THE BOOKS!!! METS WIN!!

AC,
No they weren’t.
You’ll likely be able to see the difference in about 3 1/2 weeks.
