Headline: Phils call on Hamels to preserve sweep
The Major Players: Cole Hamels, Brad Lidge, Pat Burrell, Mike Hampton, Blaine Boyer, Chipper Jones
The Venue: Turner Field, Atlanta, Ga.
The Number: 0.5 games ahead
JA Happ and the Phillies put away the Braves in a convincing 6-1 win last night. Now going for the sweep, it’s Cole Hamels’ turn to beat the Braves. He goes against Mike Hampton, who has finally been able to string together some healthy starts for Atlanta.
Coley-High-Harmony: Well over the 200-inning plateau (214.3 innings), Hamels has now crossed into his 30+ range (he has now thrown 30 more innings than last season).
Hampton In: Hampton made his first start in over a year against the Phillies on July 26. In that game he gave up six runs on eight hits in four innings; it was his worst start on his comeback trail. A month later he hit a high note, pitching eight innings against the Marlins.
One: The Braves are 9-28 in one-run games.
Road Cookin’: With a win tonight, the Phillies would finish 9-0 against the Braves in Atlanta. The only other team to have eight-straight wins in Atlanta was the 1975 Reds.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (13-9) 3.11 ERA
Braves: Mike Hampton (2-2) 5.34 ERA
Gametime: 7 p.m. EST
Weather: 80, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Utley/Werth/Howard/Burrell/Victorino/Feliz/Ruiz/Hamels

Your gamenight beer: You want Guinness? Here’s a secret: Go with the Extra Stout. It has more alcohol (6%) and is a good, light drinker with the same, fine stout taste. Who doesn’t love Guinness? Commies. That’s about it. But really, if you’re going to cheer on Hamels tonight, do it the right way: With a Guinness and a chicken pot pie. Delish.
Go Phillies!

kelly johnson needs to send ryan howard and the official scorer a bouquet of flowers to thank them for his now 16 game hitting streak.

Pat theB … the rule is that the ball had to be taken out of the the glove hand cleanly and im sorry but when it falls on the ground I’m hard pressed to consider that cleanly.

I don’t have that much of a problem with Chipper’s play. It could go either way depending on which dugout you’re in. The umpire wouldn’t have had replay so at full speed, it looks like it’d be an exchange.

Understandably but JRoll’s play is not even close to what Chipper was doing thats all I was saying and you have to consider that Mike Winters could not see what Chipper was doing since his body was shielding the play

So Florida is beating the crap out of Houston the past couple days. Has Houston come back to earth and gotten really bad or is Florida heating up to a dangerous level?

what i don’t get about bruntlett commin in for pat is … you got Golson …if the idea is a defensive improvement in the late innings … and charlie is going for Bruntlett because he can hit better than Golson … why not just keep pat in? Golson’s got the legs and the glove.

Johnny, Golson did come in one game in that roll and did poorly.

Little bit of both, the Marlins love to play spoiler and i the Astros having to play at Miller Park and getting only 1 hit in 2 games messed them up.

yeah … I guess I just don’t feel that much safer with bruntlett than I do pat defensively … casue in these close games … I’ll take pats .250 to bruntlett’s .220 anyday.

This ninth innings got me worried with Lidge because he’s struggled against the Braves.

the Braves announcers said that it’s the first time a team has swept a season series in Atlanta of 9 games or more since 1906. 9-0 in Atlanta!
2 games up in the WC with 9 to go.

I honestly was nervous with Larry coming up, but we can relax….until tomorrow night of course.
Myers vs. Johnson for us
Perez vs. Reyes for Mets/Braves

Josh Johnson has been dealing lately, that’s a tough test. JoJo Reyes is trash and the Muts should bomb him.

this sweep was huge, the phillies couldn’t be getting hotter at a better time. johnson is the pitcher i’m looking forward to facing the least, but i’m glad we have myers going up against him. out of all of our pitchers that’s the ideal matchup right now.

nice wiyn there. it was key to put pressure on the mets and the crew by sweeping the series. this team is admittedly different in september.
