Howard Locked In To Carry Load

Ryan Howard carried the load last night in a tremendous 8-7 victory over the Braves, pulling the Phillies into first place in the NL East.

Howard, hitting .396 in September, knocked his eighth homer and 22nd RBI in the month. And it’s just half finished.

Interestingly, Scott Lauber got this explanation from Charlie Manuel on why Howard gets so hot in September:

“He wants to go to arbitration. I think you see he bears down. He gets after it.”

It’s true. It’s as if he locks in for the final month so he can make up the ground he lost earlier this season. Maybe he just has a flair for the dramatic, but maybe …

“You want to be able to try to come through when your team needs it to provide a lift.”

Whatever the case, he is carrying this team on his back this month.

And quick props to the unheralded Jayson Werth, who hit a home run and scored two more on Howard’s big hits. He got on base four of the five times he stepped up. Make no mistake, without his contributions from the three-hole, the Phillies don’t win Tuesday night.

Werth has been huge but howard has been a MONSTER this month.

Was listening to Mike and Mike this morning on 950, they had Steve Phillips on….basic discussion was MVP Howard vs. Pujols. Point being if you swap them for each other which one makes his team better. I don’t see how Pujols makes us any better, except less K’s. Any thoughts?

On another note who cares about the eagles at a time like this? If you put on 610 all they’re talking about is eagles….really? Are we that ridiculous as a city that we care more about that nonsense than an amazing pennant race for the 2nd straight year.

Once we’re in the playoffs idiots will climb on board. I wish we could tell them all to f off

alot of power hitters are second half players. Jim Thome starts every year looking like he’s finished and then turns it on after the all-star break. and there are tons more guys just like that. Carlos Delgado too.

I stopped listening to 610 about 3-4 years ago. Angelo Cataldi is the absolute worst. He completely disgusts me and has no idea what he is talking about. I have no idea why the Metro let’s him write an article every week in their paper, because all anyone wants to read on the train into work is him moan about how every team in Philadelphia stinks.

I’d say the only saving grace on 610 is Howard in the afternoon’s, who everyone hates, but actually has a clue about what he is talking about and the guy from the Bucks County Courier Times that is on at night sometimes.

I think Ryan Howard is playing himself into his second MVP award. Despite his batting average, when the Phils win the division it will be because of his timely hits and defensive plays.

Jayson Werth has been huge too. He has played himself into the everyday right fielder position for years to come.

Everything looks good this year…we should go deep into October.

Tim, I remember saying that a week ago or so, that maybe Jimmy and Ryan like the drama and will really start to turn it on any time now. Can’t argue that this would be the time, I guess it’s not possible to play at that level all year???

Ok, I’m outta here, have to mow the lawn.

I seem to recall talk of someone buying someone else a trip to the washie wash. Howards numbers are there so who’s buying?
