Myers: ‘I’ve Got It Figured Out’

Rich Hoffman dove into the Brett Myers collapse in today’s Daily News, pretty much summing all our emotions. Myers says he knows what he did wrong:
Maybe I was trying to overdo it. The ball was up in the zone tonight, it just wasn’t working downhill … I’ve got it figured out. I know what I did, so it’s a little easier to fix than not knowing what happened.”
It seems to me Myers understands his problem and will fix it. But the fact he had two of his career worst starts consecutively isn’t helping the cause. I am still a little leery about how Myers will perform if the Phillies make the postseason. But it’s not like Myers is missing spots badly, he’s basically serving up bad fastballs. Those are things you can fix, right?
You see, uncertainty has clouded Myers all season. For once we thought we were certain with Myers, that he was ace-worthy. Maybe this is just a blip on the radar at a bad time. Maybe he’ll come out firing in the division series, if they get there. We can’t be certain, though.

There is nothing that the Phils need more than this day off today. It will give the whole team a chance to sit down, unwind, and get their heads on straight. These last 2 games were full of errors, which just makes me think that they guys are just too in their heads right now.

whatever happen to him throwing 93mph, everything i saw last night was 88. If he can not get his fastball going he is in trouble

What bothers me a lot about Myers is that he never seems to make in-game adjustments.. like Tom Glavine… (hall of famer, i know but still…).. If your entire life is based around throwing pitches, shouldn’t you be able to figure out and correct your flaws much sooner than after you’ve already been pulled from the game?

Myers is a head case, pure and simple. Does that mean he can’t be successful in the majors? Probably not, but I really wonder if he needs to be a closer. If you watch him in the dugout on off days, he is like a little kid, hyperactive, all over the place. Those idle days are just too much for his wired-up brain to handle, best suited for a more active day to day role, imo.

I absolutely understand your point Georgie, but he cannot close for us, we have Lidge. We need him to do what is best for us, and I don’t think trading him to someone for him to close there benefits us at all. His value really isn’t that much right about now. Maybe next year if we went out and grabbed a top of the line starter to add with Cole, Blanton , Moyer and Happ. We can make him a set-up guy eigth inning guy. Remember the Gordon and Rivera days?? They were ” Lights out.” No pun intended.

Brett’s not going to hang around as a set-up guy, if he’s sent to bullpen he’s walking as a closer as early as his taxi arrives.

Myers will be fine in the playoffs (if they get there) he thrives in pressure situations. I feel confident Myers will step up but what do I know.

Richie says…”Maybe next year if we went out and grabbed a top of the line starter to add with Cole, Blanton , Moyer and Happ.”
Happ? What about Kendrick? I think that decision between the two choices will be decided during spring training next year. If Myers is not included as an option for rotation (because of a trade?), it’s possible that both Kendrick & Happ will be in rotation ..pending on results in spring training of course.

Georgie, I agree. I too wonder if he would be better off as a closer. If he was a closer he would not have to worry about preserving himself to give 6-7 innings a night and he could focus on just getting 3 outs.
The only deal with that is he would have to go to another team to be a closer. Maybe we shop him to the Angels in the offseason, because they are probably going to lose K-Rod. The Angels have a wealth of starting pitching, maybe we could send Myers to the Angels for Jon Garland, or maybe we could package something together and get Gary Matthews Jr or Juan Rivera to take over in left field next year, as well as a starting pitcher.

i cant let myself start thinking about potential trades… it’ll eat my brain for the rest of the day if i start and instead of working i’ll be on team’s websites looking for young/cheap starters and outfielders, and probably a 3rd basemen hah.
so to cut myself off, i’d take sarge jr. and garland for brett and golson (aka the next mike bourn)

Golson is like Michael Bourn, except he can actually hit for power. Bourn was in his mid 20s before he was brought up, and by then he never really had the chance to work with the major league club before be thrust into this season as the leadoff guy in Houston. I think if Golson(who is younger than Bourn was at the same point in their major league career) has a year to come up here and learn before being thrown into the fire, he could benefit greatly from the major league coaches.
I don’t think it would take Golson to get those Sarge Jr, and Garland from Anaheim, being that Sarge Jr is the odd man out in the outfield, and Garland is their 5th-6th starter. Maybe a Jaramillo and Myers gets it done.

Please review Sarge Jr’s stats and contract and rethink any trade that would bring him here. Since when do the Phillies need someone that earns 10+ mill a year that doesn’t hit for avg or power? He had 1 good CONTRACT year. We’d be better off with just throwing Golson out in left.

Garland is a free agent…it isnt worth trading that much for sarge jr….
i agree though that golson should come up and be the 4th outfielder behind a starting right fielder. i see no reason to waste all that money on buirrell when you have to pinch run for him and pull him and stuff. why? just go get a consistent contact hitter. jayson werth can replace his power iand run production n left field if he plays the whole season.
i could actually see getting rid of myers now…i thought he was fixed, but they need more consistency than that in big games, plain and simple. if he tears it up in the playoffs then he can stay.
also, it is not worth signing jon garland, hes really no better than JA Happ, seriuosly….he ahd ONE good year.
id sign oliver perez and if you cant get sabathia then sign derek lowe. im starting to think signing ben sheets is going to be a HUGE HUGE HUGE mistake for whoever does it. so add lowe or sabathia and perez to hamels, blanton, happ. oliver perez is still 27 years old. worth the risk for a team WITH MONEY TO SPEND LIKE THE PHILLIES ARE. sabathia is sabathia, and derek lowe is CONSISTENT and durable.
myers and rollins can get you some very good value in return while clearing salary space for a big right field bat.

“I ALWAYS criticize the lack of prospects. I mean, there are like 3/4 guys who might be ML ready sometime in a year or so.” …. so getting rid of Rollins, is Donald one of those guys that will be ready in a year or so… and what do you do in the meantime for the captain-of-the-infield position??
I’m trying not to argue with you, but you make it tough… Two weeks ago we were all RAVING about how great Moyer has been this season, and instead of “TRYING TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP” like you always scream about, you’d rather have your second best pitcher -ride off into the sunset, for no good reason.
Golson is NOT READY to contribute on the MLB level.. if they get stuck without another option, he could be serviceable as a fill-in, 4th outfielder, but wouldn’t you rather have your closest OF prospect continue to develop everyday at the AAA level? I just don’t understand how we think Golson would benefit from playing less, and then playing against the BEST competition on the few chances he gets.. it really doesn’t make sense to me

Why do you guys wanna trade for Sarge Jr.?i’ve seen him in Anaheim this year and he sucks and he’s not even an everyday players out there anymore thats how much he’s sucked…If were gonna trade for somebody i say trade for Magglio Ordonez,i hear he’s on the trade block this offseason because Detroit is looking to lower their payroll and he’s a guy that hits for average every year which the Phils could use.

I would prefer Juan Rivera to Sarge Jr., mainly because he’s younger and because of the contract issue, but I think Sarge Jr. would come cheaper as far as trading prospects.
Listen, Sarge Jr. or Juan Rivera would not be a long term answer, I admit that, but we are going to need somebody to fill in next season, because I agree that Golson is not ready to start in MLB. Sarge Jr. has really only had one good year(with Texas) but with a change of scenery he may get new life.
I don’t see the Phils going out there and signing anybody better than a Geoff Jenkins quality player to play left field next season. They are cheap, and they are going to have to spend a lot of money to keep their current guys around, so why not go out and make a trade for a left fielder that’ll be here 2-3 years until we can get someone from the minors up here.
