Phillies Won’t Hold Postseason Rally

According to Paul Vigna of the Daily News, the Phillies have declined to throw a playoff pep rally. They did this last season before taking on the Colorado Rockies in the National League Division Series.

Vigna writes according to a press release, the Phils cited the funeral of city police officer Patrick McDonald as reason for not holding a rally. That may be true, but I suspect the franchise doesn’t want to celebrate a playoff berth this season, since that isn’t the goal. And frankly, I like this. No need to go crazy for a playoff berth. Go crazy for a World Series win.

Good call. Wait for the World Series. They are learning so much from last year. It showed when they clinched, not to over celebrate, and know that there is still baseball to be taken care of.

I like this move. Good call. I like how much more poised and “taking care of business” like the Phils have been with this playoff berth.

I like the decision too. We have really matured since last year.

Yeah that pep rally was a TOTAL jinx last year! I’m all for it if we win the National League Championship, but not before that.

Good call no need to over celebrate because we want more then just getting to the playoffs this year.

I just remembered something that is making me smile today. Carlos Beltran, in February: “I have no doubt that we’re going to win in our division … to Jimmy Rollins, we are the team to beat.”

I hope someone out there besides me was fortunate enough to hear Coste’s interview on 610 this morning. He was absolutely brutally honest about how much the Phillies players dislike the Mets. Great great stuff.

I am glad they are not going to hold another rally. Last year it was a circus. We should only have a rally if we win something.

KM says…”We should only have a rally if we win something.” Huh….excuse me KM, didn’t the Phils just won the NL East Division title? I agree that a rally is not necessary but mainly out of respect for the family of the police officer who died tragically. I may add that the MLB commissioner has not required but encouraged post season rallies for participating teams prior to the playoffs. The decision is with the team’s front office.

Most of the responses above (and the writer himself) is pathetic. The Red Sox do rallys every year before the playoffs. It’s a pep rally to get people excited about the playoffs, not a celebration that you actually made it there. The reason offered for the lack of rally is legitimate. The entire police force will be at the funeral and even if you wanted to hold a rally, you wouldnt have enough PD available to secure it. That’s not the point though. The point is the Phillies aren’t doing the rally because having a rally 2 blocks away from a PD funeral is classless, and so is anyone else who thinks that it would be fine to do a rally tomorrow.

    Support the PD.
