Phils Fall Back To Earth, Second Place

Brett Myers didn’t have it, and that’s all it took.
Myers allowed 10 earned runs in four innings, and the Phillies lost 14-8 to the Marlins. With the loss, the Phillies fell back into second place in the NL East. They are 0.5 games behind the Mets, but still two games above the Brewers to lead the NL Wild Card race.
The Marlins ripped Myers apart from the very beginning. They scored five runs in the first inning, with most of the damage starting with the bat and feet of Cameron Maybin. The stud prospect went 4-for-5 with three runs and two stolen bases. He rattled Myers from the get-go, and didn’t help the righty’s cause. Though Myers settled down, he walked into trouble again in the fifth inning. He couldn’t get out, and Rudy Seanez gave a homer ball to Alfredo Almezaga. Just like that, it was 11-6.
Sad because the Phils came back and grabbed the lead before all that occured. Down 5-2, Greg Dobbs smashed a home run, and the Phils got another via a Chase Utley sacrifice fly. Ryan Howard — securing his MVP candidacy — knocked his 46th home run to give the Phils a one-run lead. The lead barely lasted a commercial break.
After Seanez surrendered the Almezaga shot, it was suddenly mop-up time. Les Walrond was on the hill. Kyle Kendrick surrendered a Jorge Cantu home run. There was really no chance.
It actually makes sense. Down by so much, Charlie Manuel wanted to give his best arms a rest. Though the Phils took a loss, they had to lose some time, and hopefully, the loss gives the Phils ammunition to come out firing Saturday. The whole charade ended the Phils’ seven-game winning streak, and brought everybody back to earth. Now the Phils have to end the Marlins’ streak.

Hello Phillies Phans,
Are you enjoying the roller coaster ride as much as us Mets fans? I predict the lead will change 2 more times before a division winner is declared. It’s nice to have the wild card as a safety net. Like I keep saying, division winner or wild card, playoffs is all that matters. Keep the faith. We Mets fans are very confident the Mets will be in the post season. Once again Mets and Phillies in the NLCS. (Mets win in 5).

We were due for a clinker. I just don’t like the fact the Fish are riding momentum and believing they have a shot at it. Milwaukee is done. I think the Phills just cannot get swept this weekend and they will be fine heading home for the final 6. One of the next two in Florida would put us safely ahead of the Marlins (that would make us +4.5 with 6 to play). Florida could, however, easily catch the Mets if our friends from the stink hole city that never sleeps are not careful.
Let’s hope Blanton gives another solid effort tonight like the last time out and the bats stay hot. They hit enough last night to win, Myers just did not have any command of his fastball and they were just sitting on his curve. Keep the faith!!

Marlins love the fastball….and Myers was cruising when he wasn’t using it. Blanton should take note for tonight.

From what I saw on the highlights, everything they hit was a curve ball. Jacobs double and Uggla’s homer in the 1st were both curveballs.

Now Myers’ next start is huge….6 runs should always be enough to win, plain and simple
