2005 - .307/147hits/19hr/87rbi/68runs/14sb in 479 plate appearances
2006 - .326/196hits/34hr/115rbi/119runs/10sb in 602 plate appearances
2007 - .340/216hits/36hr/137rbi/120runs/11sb in 636 plate appearancesHoliday this year, with 23 games left, and a stint on the 15 day DL
2008 - .332/157hits/24hr/78rbi/97runs/25sb in 473 plate appearances. Now explain to me how he is not the same player he has been in previous years. Besides a considerable drop in rbis, which could be contributed to a lack of a lead-off hitter that gets on base, and a consistent two-hole hitter in front of him, where are his stats any different?Look, anybody who thinks Howard is a better hitter than Holiday is misguided and delusional. Is Howard is a better homerun/rbi guy - yes, but a better hitter, no.To address something else - yes, a strikeout is just an out, as far as scoring a game goes. A strikeout is just an out when there is nobody on base. A strikeout means more than just an out when you have a runner on second with less that 2 outs, or a runner on third with less that 2 outs, etc. Howard doesn't just strikeout in most situations, he cripples this team when he strikes out with runners on in key situations. He is the ultimate rally killer. He kills us in the field. All people want to see is the 450 foot shots he puts into left center field, and the hollow homerun/rbi stats, and they don't want to look at these huge strikeout and errors in the field. Howard is Chris Webber on MLB - he puts up big numbers, but when it comes down to it, I don't want Howard at the plate when the game is on the line(even though Howard has a lot of game winning homeruns), because I know that it will either be a homerun or strikeout, and he strikes out 5 times more often than he hits homeruns.

Matt Holiday’s stats 2005-2007:<br

First off Howard is the Phillies best clutch hitter and has been the last three years. Just his RBI and HR's compare to Schmidt ??? Another one that doesn't know the game of baseball. That's a pretty good stat to have in common. For all Howard 's errors he hasn't cost more then two games, that's less then Chase Utley. Howard is the most prolific HR and RBI hitter in his first three years in the league that the Major Leagues have ever seen. He has won ROY and MVP and you know nothings think he is done. Too Funny ! You'll have stop gap players every year at the 1st base position and will never find another like Ryan Howard. You people act like it's your money paying Howard but you are all the first to say how cheap this ownership is. Trading Howard is the dumbest thing this franchise could ever do. Condoning it and thinking you could ever get equal worth in return is down right insane.

Hey Fred ! Coors Field has a huge outfield conductive for extra base hits, frankly strikeouts are just another form of an out and therefore don't hold much back. Last year Holliday matched Howard's RBI's in a career year but since then Holliday has not put up those kind of number and probably never will again and that is why the Rockies are willing to trade him. Because they know he is not the player that he was last year.

Correction CBP is not a top 5 hitters park, CBP is good for home runs but not really a great place to hit triples and doubles since the gaps are not that large. Howard does hit most of his homeruns a mile, but the ones that barely go down the left field line would be warning track shots in most parks, and there have been quite a few of those homers this year.

Also, I probably wouldn’t be wrong if I said that CBP plays as a top 5 hitter’s ball park in all of MLB, so Howard benefits from that as well. Besides the fact that Howard is a below average fielder, while Holiday is an average left fielder; there is a huge difference in strikeouts: Holiday-87, Howard-178(and rising); there is a huge difference in batting average - Holiday-.334, Howard-.234(wow); Holiday can swipe 15-20 bags a year - Howard maybe 2. Historically, Howard does hit significantly more homeruns, but last year he had virtually the same number of rbi's as Holiday, with 11 extra homeruns, while Holiday played for a less potent offense(statistically).Holiday would be just what this lineup could use over a guy like Howard, because he knows how to hit with runners on and makes the best of his rbi situations without having to hit a homerun.

I prefer Holiday to Howard. Both Ruiz and Coste were .300 hitters in the minors and look now. He surely won't be a better defensive catcher than Ruiz. Additionally, he has 10 GIDP in AA ball, that's only one less than Ruiz at the major level. How many will he have with the big boys?Comparing Ryan Howard to Mike Schmidt is laughable. First off, Schmidt was a multiple Gold Glove winner. Not the same with stone hands Howard. Second, strikeouts. Much was made of Schmidt's strikeouts, but for his career he averaged 104 per season. Howard's astronomical rate is at 199 per season and rising. Additionally, Schmidt was Mr Clutch unlike Howard who went we really need him, i.e. the last ten games is batting .179 with 12 strikeouts in 39 ABs. The only areas Howard is like Schmidt is in HRs and RBIs and I wonder how many Howard would have hit in the canyons Schmidt had to hit in. Places like the Vet, Three Rivers, Candlestick, Riverfront and Olympic Stadium were nothing like the shoeboxes players hit in today. Unlike Schmidt, homeruns and RBIs are the only things Howard brings to the table.

Who says Marson will be able to make the adjustment from AA to the bigs? His batting average and OBP are significantly higher. And he dosn't exactly lack power. We also become better defensively with Burrell at first and Holliday in left. With who ? Who will replace those RBI and HR's ? Not Matt Holiday ! Not anyone ! You just don't replace those numbers and if you don't think that RBI and HR's are just interchangeable between players then you don't know baseball.I see that people would rather keep Pat Burrell then Howard and that makes me really laugh. It took over twenty years to replace Mike Schmidt's numbers in the Phillies line up and people want to throw it away. Well, they do, but because they're shit. I like Taguchi's offense, defense, and ability to play various infield positions, although he's a natural 2B. I still think he's better defensively than Bruntlett or Dobbs at 3rd, who are the ones spelling Feliz. And I'm not just talking this season - I'm also referring to next year as well.

Cervenak, Tracy, and Bohn do not exactly send shivers up my spine either. That said I wouldn't mind if the Phillies got him since the rosters have now expanded. I would rather have Iguchi as a pinch hitter than Cervanek, Tracy, or dare I say... TJ Bohn.

Jamie: Iguchi can only really play 2B. That said I wouldn’t mind if the Phillies got him since the rosters have now expanded. I wonder if he'd like to come back to the Phils to take over Bruntlett's role. I saw ship Brunetlett off into the sunset if he's willing to come back as a reserve player. He could fill in nicely at 3B, SS, or 2nd.

Just saw on ESPN that the Padres are going to release Taguchi. Nobody will want him at 15-16 million. And let them fight that battle. Get some good prospects to hand over to the Rockies. And give Holliday, the money Howard wants.

Need to get rid of Howard prior to Arbitration. Nobody will want him at 15-16 million. I see the Phillies keeping Howard for at least one more season so they can try to sell high on him. Also if we would only get one year of Holliday. Who would play LF after 09 in that senario? We re-sign Holliday? We move Pat back to LF and get a first baseman?I am glad to hear that the Phillies are talking about bringing Burrell back, since earlier I heard reports theat they were seriously going to lowball him and there would be little chance of him coming back if they did.

I would like to see the Phillies sign Burrell, but as already said, if they do they won’t do anything else in FA unless they up the payroll, which they theoretically could do, but is something that this Front Office does not appear to want to do.

The “trading Howard, getting Matt Holliday, re-signing Burrell to play first base” is interesting, but I doubt it would happen.
