The Hamels Must Pitch Vs. Mets Post

While Cole Hamels gets well-deserved accolades across the media today, talk is shifting to the three-game weekend set against the Mets at Shea Stadium. The matchups are as such:
Friday – Brett Myers (8-10, 4.40) vs. Mike Pelfrey (13-8, 3.66)
Saturday – Jamie Moyer (12-7, 3.80) vs. Pedro Martinez (5-3, 5.07) [may not start]
Sunday – TBA vs. Johan Santana (12-7, 2.71)
The Phillies are still “undecided” on a starter, but Charlie Manuel has expressed what he wants to do:
“I want to put Hamels on the Mets. This time of the year, we’ve got to win some of those games over there in New York.”
It’s painfully obvious that in the last game of the season against your top rival, the team you’re chasing for first place, in their home, in mid September, with 20 games to go, with an international audience on Sunday Night Baseball, against one of the best pitchers in baseball … you get it, the Phillies have to start Hamels.
There is no debate. He gets the rest day tomorrow. Unleash him.

Absolutely, cole MUST start on sunday. if he doesnt want to start on sunday hes a fraud. you stand up to santana and match him scoreless inning for scoreless inning until you win. dont you dare back away from this one cole, your teammates need you on sunday. let the rotation cycle back around and you can slide happ or carrasco in there to fill the gap left by kendrick being sat down for a while.

Agreed, he needs to start, especially since we havent picked up any games on the Mets like I thought we would with them going against the Brewers and us against the Nats.

I also agree that Hamels will start, and I think he will start unless he doesn’t think he can do it. But its regular rest so I think he will end up pitching that game.
I would like to see Carrasco or Happ take Kendrick’s place in the rotation. I think it will be Happ, but either Happ or Carrasco can’t be worse than Kendrick’s last 5 starts (1-3 with a 9.14 ERA) or even Kendrick’s last 9 starts (3-5 with a 6.45 ERA).

I have tickets to Sunday night’s game and if it’s Johan vs. Kendrick, I’ll just leave in the 3rd inning when we’re down 7-1. Hamels must start.
Also, I wouldn’t mind Happ or Carrasco in Kendrick’s rotation spot.

Hamels has to get it done for us on Sunday. I have faith in Myers, and Moyer will go either way (but he is facing Pedro who doesn’t have much left in the tank). Hamels needs to step up for this one, it’s make or break time. Have to at least win the series.

philsphan~ Carrasco is not on the roster and that includes the call ups for September. If Kendrick struggles in his next start, your wish to see Happ start may come true.
In regards to the question of whether or not Hamels will start on Sunday vs the Mets, latest team report….
“.. If Hamels pitches Sunday night, he will be making his third straight start with the requisite four days of rest between starts. But Hamels, who has a checkered injury history, often prefers having an extra day. And without another off day until Sept. 15, he’d have to make a fourth consecutive start on regular rest Sept. 12 against the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park.
“That’s something he hasn’t done (for) four starts in a row all year long,” pitching coach Rich Dubee said. “You have to take that into consideration. And he’s sitting on (a National League-leading 203) innings right now, too.”
His pitch count before being lifted in the 8th inning was substantial with 104 pitches. However, he cruised during most of the game last night without struggles and that may be in his favor for Manuel’s important decision prior to Sunday’s game.

Yea, there’s no debate on this one. Hamels MUST start, I’ll lose faith in this entire team if he doesn’t.

Hamels must start vs. the Mets. It is an absolute must! The Mets are playing great ball right now and we must win 2 of 3 games in this upcoming series. A tall order based on how they have dominated us this season. The Phillies need him to step up to the plate and perform to the best of his ability. Cole, if you do not start, IMHO you are nothing but a coward!

I’m sure I heard that Cole does lead the league in innings pitched, but not in # of pitches, since he runs alot of low counts on hitters.

It’s a no brainer, there’s an argumement that most of Cole’s starts have been made on 5 days rest and he has pitched an incredible number of innings but in a game of this importance you put your best guy out there. Nothing against the kid but considering Moyer wont pitch in the Fish series it’s essential to have Cole go against Santana.

whoa whoa whoa…lets get the Natties and take the first two off the Mets first. Priorities, priorities. When we are 1 UP, then yes, Hamels it is.

I’m attending all three games against the Phils this weekend. Isn’t it fun to have a rivalry that’s worthwhile to bask in in the NL East?

Let’s not forget that Milwaukee is reachable, too. 4 GB on them going into tonight IF the Mets can hold the lead. 92 Ws does it. 16-7 from here.

Remember ladies and gentlemen, the Cubs come into Shea for four games late in September.

The cubs will have probably clinched by then.

yea they do but like sumone said they would clinch by then meaning mostly all cubs starters would take off MOSTLY and still we could beat the cubs i mean wow we about to sweep the brewers

well, if we win tonight, we’ll only be 3.5 behind Milwaukee with 4 games against them in our building. Plus, Sheets is going to miss his next start.

You thought the Brewers were good this year? Braniac – they are good. Did it ever occur to you that the Mets are good also? Maybe even better and clicking at the right time? Their lineup is cranking out many more runs than the Phils as of late. But as a typical Philly fan…I know that kills you, so keep discrediting the opposition.
And 4 vs the Cubs at Shea is a non factor. They will be resting most their starters, and will have clinched by then. Furthermore, you split with them at Wrigley. Mets can split or take 3 of 4 at home…don’t see it as a big deal.

Anyone think the Brewers are the 07 Mets and will blow their Wildcard lead?

If the Brewers blow their wild card lead to the Phils.. that means the Phils play the Cubs in the first round… that’s a tough job.

this is strange. but for some reason, even though i think this team might be worse than it was last year, they may just fare better. i have a strange feeling of them boggling our minds in a positive way and maybe win a series before getting desroyed, badly, by someone. i dont think they will, but im starting to have wierd gut feelings about it.

Bruce: Get freaking TJ Bohn off the 40 man roster and you have room for Carrasco. There are plenty of other guys who don’t belong on the 40 man roster. If the Phillies want to bring him up, they can. The 40 man roster is not much of an obstacle if you really want a guy to play for you.

Here’s a thought! What the hell are we gonna do if Moyer loses on Sat and Hamels gets knocked out in the 5th on Sun. what are we going to build on then? You just gave away everything in a desperation move. J. Happ is the right move here because he’s fresh and has a good arm.

This Mets/Brewers series is potentially a preview of the NLDS…….That said, this can actually hurt the Mets in the long run because the Brewers will come after them with guns blazing.HOWEVER it may all change if the Phils sweep them after facing the Amazins this weekend. If Mets/Phils play up to their potential…….we COULD have a Mets/Phillies NLCS which is what I prefer.Could the Blue Crew falter ala the 2007 Mets? That is possible.

I want a Hamels/Santana match up for Sunday.I think we all need to know now if Hamels is tough enough to face a potentially volatile situation that could put the Phils in a race,or is it the last act of desparation.I want the Mets to face what is the best Starter/Ace in the Phils so everyone can gauge if he is a man or mouse.IF he opts not to pitch, than he sealed his fate.

Come on now guys..You make it seem like Santana is God-like or some shit. We matched Kendrick Vs Santana last series, and luckily the Mets Bullpen saved their ass that game. It’s not Santana I’m worried about, it’s Tatis. I do however agree Hamels need to get this start though, just because it’ll be more balanced.

With the exception of his last start against the Phillies, in which he still pitched well enough, Santana has owned us this year. Plain and simple.
I fear him far more than Fernando Tatis.
