Unsung Lidge Deserves Cy Young Votes

Lost in the conversation about Ryan Howard’s resurgence, Brett Myers’ comeback and other hot-hitting and -pitching Phillies is Brad Lidge. It’s as if we’ve taken him for granted — we know he’s doing his thing back there, saving every game, keeping things running strong.
Well it’s time to show him apt appreciation. One poster questioned Lidge’s candidacy for a Cy Young award. Frankly, he’s on my short list. While boy-wonder Tim Lincecum has been sparkling for the Giants, he’s nowhere near a pennant race. And while CC Sabathia has been a few pitches short of perfect for the Brewers, he came into the National League a bit late. Guys such as Brandon Webb, Edinson Volquez, Johan Santana and our own Cole Hamels have been fantastic, but why not vote for a guy who’s been perfect in his role?
Lidge has thrown 65.1 innings this season, just a shade off from his average (which he’ll likely hit on the head by the last game). He’s 38 for 38 in save chances, slinging a 1.93 ERA with 84 strikeouts. The 84:32 K:BB ratio isn’t bad, either.
What most impresses me is how quickly Lidge has turned talk from “will he bounce back?” to “will he be perfect?” And how he’s shrugged off the pressure talk, going out there every night and shutting down everyone.
We spend so much time waxing about slumps and what-ifs and injuries and trades that when there’s something this good going, we tend to brush it aside. Now it’s time to recognize Lidge, maybe, this team’s true MVP.

Couldn’t agree more. I think people get too caught up with actual number of saves when looking at closers. Comparing Lidge to K-Rod (they’ve pitched basically the exact number of innings), Lidge has given up less hits, walks, runs, with a better an ERA almost a half a run better. He also has more K’s than “K-Rod.” Yes, K-Rod set the Saves record this year, but your team is a huge part of that. You can only save the games when your team gives you the opportunity to do so. The Angels run differential is only +65, that really low for a team that’s going to win close to 100 games. So the Angels are in a ton of close games and give K-Rod plenty of opportunities for those saves. Lidge would absolutely be getting Cy Young votes from me.

K-Rod has 7 blown saves this year too..
Lidge will get votes im sure, but Webb, Lincecum, and CC Sabathia will finish ahead of him most likely..

He should be in the conversation, but, unfortunately, that conversation should be a short one. The closer role is one with almost an unprecedented specificity, one that’s clearly very important, but one that pigeonholes a player into an awkward position when it comes to awards.
You wouldn’t think of giving a left tackle the offensive MVP, nor would it go to a kicker, no matter how important they are. In the end, a kicker, which is the position in the NFL most akin to a closer in the late stages — you inherit a game and it’s your job to convert, every time — wouldn’t be MVP because, most importantly, you inherit the situation. And no amount of conversions can make up for the fact that without the team around you, you’d have nothing.
Lidge has been amazing. Nothing short of that. He’s one of the top three reasons that we’re anywhere close to the race right now, and we are so lucky to have him on our team. But Timmy Lincecum has thrown about 160 more innings, and his numbers are off the radar. He’s started games and closed them, all by himself. A closer, sadly, just can’t match up.

I feel like I’m being a negative Nancy, haha — Brad Lidge has been one of the absolute best pitchers in the league this year, and it’s been incredibly lucky for us that he’s done so in a Phillies uniform.
There should be an award for closers. Like, the Eckersley Bronzed Moustache or something.

I agree Scheity, for a closer, he’s been amazing, but a closer has nowhere near the value of a starter.
Lincecum should be the Cy Young award winner.
Lidge has been awesome though.

He couldn’t have worked out better! Granted, when the trade was first made, I was concerned about his emotional makeup. How would he respond after his first blown save at home? Would the fans get all over him and would he melt down again. I didn’t think he’d be perfect. I am still concerned about what might happen in a pressure game down the stretch. Maybe it would have been better if he blew one earlier in the season and got over it…….

I was thinking the same thing about him blowing one, jeff. But the more I think about it, he should be fine. He blows one game, he’ll still look back at (at least) 37 straight he didn’t blow. At some point he’s got to be mentally tougher for being perfect so far.

Lidge? What about Moyer?
14 Wins. 3.86 era and he’s in his 80′s.
Without a doubt Moyer has been our MVP this season.

There have been some crummy trades done by the Phils lately, but this sure wasn’t one of them. They stole Lidge from the Astros.

He doesn’t deserve the Cy Young award, but he certainly deserves votes. Hamels will probably get a few votes too because of the era, whip, ip, and k’s.

Hamels is having a better year than Moyer (who is having a GREAT year!!) … Lidge is having an awesome year too, but people overvalue the closer so much in general.
1-run games and stuff are crucial, but when some of those saves are with a 3-run lead, nobody on base for the other team… it takes away from the overall importance of that role in my opinion. Often its harder for a JC Romero, or Durbin or some situational guy to come into a game with runners on and trying to get out of a jam.. (just my thoughts..)

Probably no Phillie or Met will win MVP. Too many candidates on both teams. They will siphon votes from each other. Look for a Cubbie. Or, Braun if the Brewers sneak back in.

Lidge has been doing an amazing job, but will not win the Cy Young. Does he deserve votes? Absolutely. But Lincecum is 17-4 with a 2.46 ERA and about 250 strikeouts on an absolutely horrific team. And, after all, the Cy Young Award goes to the BEST pitcher, not the most valuable.
Which is why Ryan Howard should be NL MVP, not Pujols.

No Cub is having an MVP season. They’re a great team, but each player is part of a bigger picture. Aramis is having a good year, but not MVP quality.

I don’t think Lidge deserves the Cy Young just because I think closers are so specialized and I think a pitcher that wins 20 games is more deserving than any closer, even Lidge or K-Rod. Still, as amazing as Ryan Howard, Jamie Moyer, and others have been this year, Brad Lidge is the reason that the Phillies are leading the NL East. The Phillies are 73-0 when leading after 8 innings, that’s just unfathomable! Meanwhile, the Mets bullpen has blown something like 12 saves this year. Give Lidge four blown saves, probably average for a closer, and take away a couple blown saves from the Mets and we’re out of the NL East race. That’s how important Lidge has been to this team, when he comes in it’s a guaranteed win this year, and in a close race with the Mets that makes all the difference.

The Dupend’s “Dependable Man of the Year”. A Cy Young like award but you have to be over 40 to recieve it.
One Vote here for Moyer

yea but take away Howard and we’re out of it…. take away Moyer and we’re out of it… take away Hamels and we’re out of it..
you could say that ANY player on the team, because its the ALL the pieces together that make this team what it is.. nobody thought that Lidge or Moyer would have the years they are having, so while they are more SURPRISING.. I wouldn’t definitely say that they are more valuable.. its a great problem to have though, which guy on your team is the MVP !!!

Moyer and Rollins are two of the best players on the team… the pitchers have been great all season… and the team has been healthier than almost every other team in baseball..
so for the rest of us that don’t know baseball as well as you do.. can you explain your logic here??

because thats going to free up some money to improve the team in other ways. the two big needs they have are Starting Pitcher and Right Field (assuming Burrell leaves and Werth moves to Left. Wheres all that money going to come from?
you ahve shortstop(S) in the minor leagues who can do a good enough job for cheaper. not better necessarily but good enough. the bottom line is that jimmy rollins is expendable.
for moyer, who has been GREAT this year, what a great way to go out? after a positive year. possibly a playoff run? great way to go out. its a no brainer to keep him around the organization though because of what he can offer the plays in terms of wisdom. hes the best suited guy ive ever seen to be a pitching coach. what a wealth of knowledge about pitching he must be to younger pitchers. fill the slot with a very good starter and make happ be the 5th man.
now..theyll probably have to sign a free agent to address the corner outfield needs….again.
every time rich dubee goes out to talk to the pitcher, and then leaves him him, 70 percent of the time the next batter drives in a run. PERIOD!
that tells you all you need to know about rich dubee.

Geoff…I usually agree with most of what you say, but the Phillies should resign Jamie Moyer. He wants to pitch. Why would you deny him of that after everything he’s done for this clubhouse? Also, you’re not going to find anyone in the corner outfield market worth signing. They’ll have to trade for one. My vote is for DeJesus. This would be a good line up.
Rollins
Utley
DeJesus
Howard
Werth
Victorino
Feliz
Ruiz/Marson/Coste

Dejesus isnt any better than Werth, so to trade young prospects for him wouldn’t be the best move ever…
I could see if you wanted to trade Golson and maybe Kendrick..ish but not giving up “top prospects”..

Geoff, they are the fcuking ROYALS.. they have no leverage at all in trades.. if they want to keep good players on their shitty team instead of brining in young guys that they dont have to pay.. let them…
I love that when you want the Phillies to trade their guys you talk about how other teams will take ANYTHING in return.. but when someone else brings up trade talks you say how it’ll cost your entire farm system.. and two of those guys Marson and Donald, are going to be All-Stars in your eyes, a little steep, no?

what will golson and kendrick get you? would the guy you got even be serviceable?
at this point, I wouldnt even trade JA Happ. not after 6 blank frames for his first win. hes much easier to watch then kendrick, and id be ok with trading kendrick after letting him play out.

thats what im saying don
im throwing that out there in response to their calls for greinke and dejesus. im saying, if you want those players you gotta cough up your best prospects, period.

id actually rather them just sign someone WHO CAN ACTUALLY BE SERVICEABLE to play right field. no more geoff jenkins…
even a servicebale major league corner outfielder is going to cost a lot in a trade…

the arguments against lidge for cy young are the same type of argument people give for pitchers not winning mvp…but it has been done..gagne won the cy young as a closer and the role is obviously important if you have closers winning mvp awards in the postseason…the guy does his job better than any other pitcher out there (besides lincecum who i think should get it)
i agree howard is most valuable and it has been all season, besides the avg he has been an rbi machine he hits when it counts. pujols is overall the better player but the cardinals with him are going to be watching the playoffs and would be without him…the phils would not be anywhere near the playoffs without howard

Gagne, was 2-3 with a 1.20 ERA and had 137 strikeouts and 20 walks in 82 1/3 innings the year he won the CY Young. Lidge’s numbers are not going to be there obviously, but it is not far fetched to think he will at least get some votes.

what about instead of a CY award we do a COY award…?
Closer of the Year, the emergence of that role as a secure spot for EVERY MLB team should warrant something in the aspect of an award right? a lot of mags and websites already have ‘reliever of the year’ awards why not solidify it with the league as an actual award…
in which case lights out and k-rod would def. receive it this year…

K-Rod will win the Rolaids Relief Award, undeserving. He’s not even the best closer in the AL. Mo, Papelbon, Soria, and Nathan are all better than K-Rod. Lidge is far and away the best in the NL.

tyhere does need to be an official MLB AL/NL bullpen award to seperate the categories. its unfair to lump starters and relievers together in awards races.

My vote would go to Lincecum(17-4, 243 Ks, 2.46 ERA on a bad team); Lidge would definitely get some consideration; Webb has been good, but has tailed off dramatically since the start of the year; Sabathia has been amazing(best NL pitcher since he’s been here), but the fact that he hasen’t played here all year will detract from his votes.
My order would be:
Lincecum
Lidge
Sabathia
Webb
