Blogger Details Dodger Fans’ Abusiveness

Since we’re always bombarded with the reference of Santa Claus in 1962, why not shed light on other unruly fanbases?

No Joshin’ — affiliated with neither the Phillies nor the Dodgers — wrote about his experience in the cheap seats during game three. He attended with his friend, a Phillie fan, who was practically terrorized by Dodger fans. A few other instances are referenced there. Here’s his final take:

“I’ve been to Dodger Stadium before. I’ve had fun there before. But that night has left a severe scar on how I view Dodger Stadium and Dodgers fans. You always hear about Raiders fans at the black hole, or Philadelphia fans booing Santa, or college football rivalries that provide tense moments. But I could have enjoyed my life as a sports fan blissfully unaware of how utterly classless, thoughtless, and gutless some of the Dodgers fans act.”

Just sad. Hopefully one day the media realizes practically every fanbase does this kind of crap, and it’s not just Philadelphia.

Its a shame all the badsports out there. Ive been in the military and stationed several places across the country, Philly fans are the most hated everywhere. Try watching an Eagles game in a denver cowboys bar (only place could see it) and have the Eagles come out down after the half and kick and receive an onsides kick that starts a comback for eventual win. Cowboys fans were Jerks and caused me and my wife to leave a few minutes before the end of the game because they were such sore losers. Philly Fans are the best and the most devoted, thats why everyone hates us :)

    Come on, cut the crap.

The same fan base that boos Santa Claus in front of thousands of children, insults Governor palin’s children, and is outright abusive to mets fans is upset because of a few anecdotal stories on blogs about unruly Dodgers fans?

Everyone knows not all Philadelphia sports phans are stoopid phanatics like those as often described (although their “professional’ sports teams certainly give them good reason). Same is true with LA fans (although Joe Torrre’s recent judgement re his pitching staff certainly gives us good reason).

FYI, there is a Philly-themed sports bar in Santa Monica (that’s a city just next to LA proper) that hosts fans of the Phillies AND the Dodgers to watch these mostly dreadful games. Die-hard supporters of BOTH teams have been joining and watching togteher without incident – and heavy consumption of alcohol is even involved.

For that anonymous blogger to suggest that most LA fans are classless, violent and rude is not just false, it’s borderline racist.

I am proud of my Dodgers fans’ behavior at Dodger Stadium and I am proud of the respect Philly transplants show us here in Los Angeles.

    Go Blue,

Just to clarifty your little incidents that you like to reference since you obviously have a great deal of ignorance.

The Santa incident: It happened at an Eagles game at Franklin Field in 1968 in December. It was not Santa Claus or a hired impersonator. It was a drunk guy pulled from the stands wearing a crappy Santa outfit. A good deal of us weren’t even alive then and it is the most overbloated story that is shrouded in more myth then truth, which you have just shown. But to you, the myth is sexier and tries to make you sound big, bad, and tough.

Sarah Palin: This happened at a Flyers game, once again having nothing to do with the Phillies outside of being in the same town. Ed Snider, the chairmen of Comcast, is a big Republican and McCain supporter and brought Palin as a way of shoving his political beliefs to the fanbase. Philadelphia is a very Democrat heavy city/population. On top of that, they should have known better. You sincerely think she was going to get an ovation? Verbally booing does no physical harm to someone, not to mention that she is indeed a polarizing figure who is easily hated.

Anybody here can also attest that Mets and Phillies fans have a rivalry, but the vast majority of it is kept to verbal taunting. Nobody attacks anybody, and for the few altercations that happen, it is no different then what you’d find in any other rivalry driven fanbase.

I have been to tons of Phillies games and Eagles games (including against the hated Cowboys). I can assure you that although Philly fans can be tough verbally, the actual physical abuse is at a bare minimum and would be on par that you would see in any fanbase anywhere.

The accounts out of Dodgers stadium (including videos on YouTube) show physical assaulting and attacks going on. Dodgers fans were physically attacking Phillies fans there. My best friend was attacked there and has a huge black and blue on his ribs now just because he was wearing a Phillies jersey. All of these accounts and videos show the fans not provoking it. The Dodgers fans went on the offensive.

These accounts are there and the video is there, so please tell me what is false?

But if it makes you proud to say that represents your fanbase, then I pity you, sir.

GoBlue does *not* represent the fanbase. No no way, not no how.

I would not only suggest that some (*some, mind you*) Dodger fans are classless, underprivileged boors and I’m not even going to bring race into it…. but I easily could.

To say he’s “proud” of the behavior of the fanbase would be mindboggling. Was he at Game 4? I was, and saw some pretty lame behavior toward Philly fans. Friggin’ inexcusable in my book. I am not saying you can’t be passionate about your team, but at least try to remember that it’s a game – not a deathmatch. That same element is what shows up at US vs. Mexico soccer games … and roots for the VISITING team….. 98% of the time. Don’t tell me about racism.

For all the true Dodger fans, Game 4 was a disaster. Both on the field and off. Let’s go Dodgers! Take it back to Philly!

    40 Year Old,

    It’s just how fanbases go.

There are good apples and bad apples in every one. No fanbase is without sin.

I’ve just heard a lot of horror stories coming out of Dodgers Stadium, as we all have.

Thank you for being classy here, though.

    40 Year Old,

Also as a followup, the main purpose of this original thread was because we Philly fans get a constant hammering in the national media and perception. It is clouded in myth and stereotypes with nothing but half-truths and downright lies.

So there is a lot of bottled up frustration that deviates from stories like this. T.J. Simers article was a good example. We read that and then heard the accounts and it just baffled us.

Once again, thank you for being in the classier bunch.

    Understood….

That’s why I wrote Simers last night. Didn’t get a reply directly, but the LA Times has a couple of articles about LA-crap-fan-behavior this morning. It’s a start, but we have a lot of bad apples to weed out.

It’s hard for us long-time fans to simply “give up” on our team because there are a bunch of thugs at the game who try to ruin it. What are we to do, become Diamondback fans? Ugh.

Look forward to the game tonight. Sadly, I will not be on the left field line to heckle Burrell, but my thoughts are there….

*praying now* “Please let us get this one back to Philly!”

dodger fan, when I was watching the first game in LA, towards the end I saw a bunch of a-holes moving down into the front seats, and the people around them looked annoyed and embarrassed, but those were the ones that you notice. Unfortunately, it takes only a few jerks amongst thousands of decent fans to give an entire city a bad rep.

Well, in reference to “a-holes” moving into empty seats toward the end of the game……. that’s something we’ve done since I was like 12 years old. Wait til the crowd thins out and head down to field level for a closer look at your heros. I don’t know how “annoyed” other folks nearby would get. As long as you’re not *in* someone’s seat, I don’t see the problem.

Maybe it was the way these recent “Seat Poachers” acted when they got to the seats. I have seen my share of rude, self-entitled, so-called “doyer fans” act a bit crudely in similar situations.

And believe me, LA bashing is like a national pastime, so we’re used to it. Our rep has been thorougly sullied for many years…. (this latest smudge notwithstanding.)

I am glad I will be watching from the comfort of my local bar this evening.

“We had a huge altercation recently involving a bunch of guys in Dodgers jerseys,” Anita told me by phone. “It was a huge fight. There were girls in here, and they were all scared. We didn’t want that to happen again, so we decided it would be best to just ban all Dodgers jerseys.”

On the link at the bottom of Brian’s link, I found something else interesting:

    http://deadspin.com/5063158/phillies-threaten-to-eliminate-dodgers-peta-threatens-to-eliminate-phillies

Deciphering Simers. So notorious d-nozzle TJ Simers has thrown some written barbs towards Philadelphia and its fans. In response, Philadelphians have responded with “a bunch of angry e-mail.” But should we really be mad at Simers? Shouldn’t we take pity on the man? Consider that he has to write about sports in LA, a city that has second largest population in America but can’t support a professional football team. Jacksonville has a football team for God’s sake. So, why don’t we take a closer look at some of Simers quotes and what he’s really saying. I think you’ll find he’s just crying out for help

Ouch. We had way too many “0 for 4″ hitters last night. Cole was on.

Congrats, Phillies… you are the better team….. this year.

    40 Year Dodger Fan,

Did you read Mrs. Simers’ new article?

“SEVERAL DODGERS fans e-mailed complaining about the fan experience in the stadium for Game 4.

‘I am not sure I will take my son to another Dodger game any time soon,’ wrote Ken Gowey. ‘It makes me absolutely ashamed to be a Dodger fan.’

I was afraid of this, knowing some folks born in Philly have probably moved here and become Dodgers fans over the years.

The thing is, you just can’t take the Angryville out of them, which obviously explains all the problems in Dodger Stadium.’

    Yeah I saw that.

Guess my email did *not* fall on deaf ears. Unfortunately, the response by Simers was horribly obtuse.

His response shows me that he didn’t grasp the intent of my email at all. Oh, and unlike TJ, I was born in So Cal (Santa Monica). I’m not sure how ‘transplanted Phillies-cum-Dodger fans” got into this. Wow, talk about missing the point….

My email to Simers in it’s entirity:

“Because of the sheer volume of bad vibes and animosity I saw at the game last night, I am not sure that I will take my son to another Dodger game any time soon. What happened to “watching the game” and sportsmanship?

Last night’s loss was tough, but what I saw in terms of general fan behavior (the entire evening) has upset me far more. It makes me absolutely ashamed to be a Dodger fan.”

That guy is a delusional piece of trash. He needs to get his ass kicked, but the problem is that his head is so far up it that you don’t know where he begins and his ass ends.

I’m tempted to write something, but I don’t want to inflate his ego more then his blow up sex doll.

I just did. This has my blood up somewhat (and is causing me to waste 10 minutes of valuable work time!) What I hate is that fact that my observation became skewed in some off-hand rant about “angryville” fans.” I for one don’t know anyone from Philly who has converted to being a Dodger fan. Absurd.

The REAL truth about this problem is painfully obvious to anyone with half a brain.

This guy also clearly doesn’t know Philly fans. We live and die with our teams through more heartbreak then glory, but we never give up on them or “convert.”

The guy is an egomaniac. I’d love to meet this guy face to face to see if he can actually stand up for what he prints, but I have a feeling he’s a coward.

I’m just bummed that he used my email to toss out a silly barb at “Angryville” once again. I think I’d rather spend the night on the sidewalk near Temple than spend 3 hours in the left field pavillion at Dodger Stadium.

Hey man, I totally agree. That would drive me nuts if I was misrepresented that way.

And honestly, this guy shows that he clearly has no idea what Philadelphia is or what it is like to hang out with the fans.

Why do you think we all got mad in the first place? Because he totally misrepresented Philadelphia with his ignorant ranting because he is just a sore loser.

Well, after all was said and done, looks like the Phil’s were for real this year. (Weird ending though – a 3 1/2 inning final world series game?)

After this threat lambasted Dodger fans (rightfully) for acting boorish during the Nat’l league playoffs, I then read:

    http://cbs3.com/topstories/Philadelphia.Phillies.Tampa.2.852091.html

“Windows were smashed at a bank and luggage store in the downtown shopping district. At least two cars were overturned, the windows of a TV van were smashed, dozens of huge streetside planters were flipped over and some bus shelters were damaged or destroyed.”

Ah, the fruits of victory. You just can’t keep a bad fan down.

We’ll see you guys next year perhaps?
