A co-worker of mine, a lifelong Red Sox fan in his mid-30′s, and I were talking about the neo-Red Sox attitude the other day. The pink hats. We were talking about how the Sox and Phillies fan base was always very similar up until a few years ago — dedicated and knowledgeable fans from blue-collar cities, never able to seal the deal, and always in the shadows of the New York teams — and how we grew up rooting for each others’ teams in the playoffs because it was really rooting against New York. While he said he wouldn’t prefer the alternative, he can’t stand the new Red Sox fan. That it bothers him to see cocky pricks at the bar talking about the Red Sox like Yankees fans talked to him his whole life. He’s rightfully bitter that these kids will never have the words “Bill Bucker” thrown back at them whenever baseball is brought up.

I would like to think that if the Phillies won it all, our fans wouldn’t be like that, but to be honest I wouldn’t want the alternative either.

(That said, ‘redsoxfan’ is either 13 or a Mets fan in disguise)

I hear you guys. The 21st Century arrives and the Boston Red Sox have won two World Series. It’s quite a difference from the last half of the 20th century. Growing up Irish in the suburbs of Phila., everyone carried a traditional of rooting for the Phillies, and then the Red Sox. Both cities were small and had a long traditional of being the underdogs. So it’s was strange hearing Shaughnessy’s video comments wishing for a Dodgers – Sox series. What is the world coming to when you can’t even align yourself with your old cousin wishing for a northeast series without the Yankees?

It’s funny, I remember sitting down on South Street in ’04 and everyone was so ecstatic for the Sox. We could all empathize with Bean Town and thought maybe, just maybe the great tides of MLB were changing and our sweet Phillies had their shot coming. Now, four years later, after coming within a game in the division twice and making the playoffs once, it is time to truly test the mettle of the end result of our years of crying and praying.

I hope that once the Rays beat them in six games, Boston can look fondly to their colonial brothers in arms, realize that it wasn’t so long ago that they were where we are and cheer on a fellow team in red.

Well, guess he got everyone off the subject for a bit…Seriously, Eyre is a nice addition to a bullpen that was starting to fray around the edges a bit in late August-early September. IIRC, J.C. and Durbin were spent by that point, and the acquisition of Eyre gave them a little breathing room.

Now, as to Mr. RSF, all I have to say is I would just love to see his little team come down here and play a few games. I think the Phils can match ‘em man-for-man right down the roster. And I think the Phils are well-suited to take advantage of that little ballpark they play in up there. Also, he needs to stop worrying about Philly and concentrate on the Rays, cause they are gonna eat the Sox lunch if the Sox aren’t careful.

just like here.. the Phillies are the new Eagles… For a long time Bostonians weren’t sure who they liked… then the started winning championships and whatnot.. and fans come out from the woodworks..

you know that would happen here too. so no use getting mad that it happens, but its corny to start ripping fans and teams that you aren’t even rivals with..

Truth is, there are Sox die-hards, and they’re good fans. But when a team wins, the bandwagon shows up, the fairweathers come out and suddenly it’s trendy to be a fan. The Sox capitalized off that with claiming “Red Sox Nation.” Annoying? Yeah. Self-posturing? Sure. Deserved? They have won.

Do you notice how there was none of this nonsense buzz from Red Sox Fans or media yesterday. How they still are expecting that collapse that they were once so used to that they had less fans in Fenway than the Marlins do. I was at Fenway in the late 90′s, they would let you walk in the stadium if you bought a couple hot dogs and beers. What a joke of a team, city, and fans. All of a sudden right, go back to your buckner hole and cry ya babies!!!

He is the same type of dude that the typical drunk-college Phillies fan is too… you know if we win a Championship.. so many dudes will go to other teams sites and talk smack.. thats not my thing… I went to MetsBlog once.. didn’t post anything.. read a few things, and left..

I don’t have the interest in start cyber-arguements with fans from teams we may or may not play later in the postseason

ok my bad, like to think good of Red Sox Nation and really admire what Henry put together there at a time many owners in sport can’t do what’s right for the team. I come from a place where baseball fans are a pretty rare thing so we tend to be forgiving and passionate for the game more than the cockiness (not forgiving about the Mets though, their so self-absorbed I wouldn’t be surprised if most of their fans chucked out their playboys in preference of the Jose Reyes poster on their wall)

I hope all of the Boston fans drive off on of their many bridges on the way to the game. Don, I also know a couple of sox fans and he once said “I liked the team better when they had not won because if you saw another fan you knew they went through the disappointment of years past. Now you see one and they have been a fan for like the past three years.” And he also resented the cocky attitude. How quickly they forget the years of Ruth, Dent, Boone, and just plain SUCKING.

I just think its fun to call them out for being fans since Game #4 of the 2004 ALCS… now they all act like Da Super Fans.. but instead of DITKA… they are somehow in love with Francona.. and intsead of Polish Sausage.. they like that white chowdah

I know a couple of RedSox fans.. people actually from the area…. and their cockiness is definitely a new found thing.. so I hope that the Rays win!

It’s funny to have a Sox troll here, the Sox are a classy organisation with good fans who’ve won enough to feel they don’t need to berated the failures of other teams so where has this douche come from… Is he a frustrated pre ’04 Sox fan oblvious to their success from a four year long masterbation session? And for the Pats, they got caught cheating and there’s no denial, don’t you remember the draft pick penalty and $500k fine?

On to Charlie, the guy may not be the tactician and coach some in the league are but he’s an emotional guy who seems to care deeply for his players and he’s that blue-collar guy who people can buy into in Philly especially the players. This is new ground for him too and he’s doing a great job staying true to what got the team here.

Actually the teams really don’t make much off of the playoffs, the players do. Teams in the past said it’s almost a break even proposition.
