Hamels Is A Hip Cat, Ya Dig?

If we’re counting the postseason, here’s what Cole Hamels has done in 2008:
36 GS
249.1 IP
17-10
2.92 ERA
218 K
59 BB
Pretty good, eh?
Sam Donellon paints Cole Hamels as cool-hand Cole. He’s the tone setter. To wit, Mr. Cole:
“Game one, I think, sets the table and the tone for what the series is going to be like.”
Cool-hand Cole hasn’t strayed from his position much this season. He’s good, he knows it, and he’ll beat you down easy. He won’t bark, he won’t growl, he’ll just slide the fastball by you, hurt you with the suave changeup, throw in the debilitating curve.
Hamels hushed the Brewers in game one of the NLDS, and though he gave up two early runs, eased the Dodgers into the loss column in game one of the NLCS. Tonight he’ll face a hungry, excited Rays lineup, a bunch of menacing, drooling little guys ready to pounce in the global limelight. The key for Cole, who hasn’t been here either, is to play it cool. Said Rich Dubee:
“He’s had the mindset of not panicking. Controlling innings, controlling games, getting deep into games and giving us a chance to win.”
Absolutely. Go deep, pitch your game. Notice how these Phillies just play their game? Cole is the one who sets that up. He’ll have a tall order tonight, but no doubt he’ll look to smooth his way through without much of a hiccup.
EDIT: My headline was written before I saw this quote from JC Romero about Hamels: Have you seen that cat? He has no emotions. He’s like a quiet assassin.” Fantastic.

Hamels’ starts in Games 1 and 5 are crucial to winning the WS. Go Cole!

Georgie – man, it’s been fifteen years. I’ve already got my gameday beer flowin. I think Hamles shuts em down tonight. I also think Howard explodes this series. Four huge home runs and the MVP award for the big fella

Cool-hand Cole? I love it. Not a bad idea to follow up the Boo? and Howard-Utley ’08 lines.

The good thing for Cole is that hopefully we can get some things going in the top 1st. There is no doubt Kazmir will be nervous and if he’s not able to control the nerves the Phils will jump all over him. Cole will be able to take a few deep breaths and take the mound cool, calm and relaxed.

Give Hamels an early lead and the game is over. Either way Hamels will have the Phillies in a position to win this game tonight.

I like Cole today, but it’s never too good to feel overconfident for such a crucial game.

Go with it Don. Visualize it. Do meditation and chant it if you have to. Whatever it takes.

Time to lock him up on a long term contract?
Buy out his remaining arbitration years and at least two or three of his ‘free’ agent years.
What do you think it would cost?

Anybody have stats on how Cole does indoors? Don?

7 indoor starts in his career.. 3 wins, 1 Loss, with a 4.63 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and .238 Batting Avg Against
Any stats that you ever want to find.. I just go to Yahoo Sports.. if you click on a certain player.. they have tabs for Career Stats, Split Stats…etc..
For this info I did Split Stats, and click on Since 1987…which is his whole career of course

SO TAGUCHI is a career .290 hitter indoors …. so you know he’ll go YARD if he pinch hits
Dobbs indoors .286
Bruntlett indoors .280
Coste indoors ……………… .471 !!!!
Jenkins .276
Stairs only .253 …
BUT… you throw all that crap out the window in the World Series.. Hamels could pitch in a hail-storm and still be effective right now

Hamels needs to keep the ball down and he will be golden. Even though he won the last game against LA, his pitches were up and he struggled in the first three innings. I expect he will finish with about 9Ks at least.
He should get 15M a year for 5 years.

Right!!?? Only if it goes all 7, cause he’ll get all those “indoor” at bats!
haha… how ridiculous did that get the other day.. people thinking I want Taguchi in the game as the DH, because I said that he should be the 25th man on the roster instead of Marson..
I just knew that there was no chance in hell that Marson was making the WS roster, so I was trying to give an insight as to what their reasoning was.. which I agreed with..
