Myers Needs To Channel His Inner-Moyer

Brett Myers goes today for the Phils, a day after Cole Hamels won his biggest start of his career. Now, it’s Myers’ turn to have his biggest start.
Hamels beat the Brewers by mixing pitches, changing speeds, baffling hitters. The Brewers, a fastball-hitting team, hates the changeup (second-worst team against the changeup). Myers will have to channel his inner-Moyer, toss many changes and off-speed pitches in order to beat Milwaukee.
Can he do it?

Consider this an open “here’s what the Phils need to do” thread before the game. I’m en route to the Bank (actually now I’m at the pregame festivities). Gamenight post will be up later.

Anyone else surprised that Coste isn’t catching Myers tonight?

I am leaving work in about 12 minutes to head down to the game.
This will be my first phillies playoff game and the feeling is better then waking up on Christmas morning.
Do I think Myers can do it? Nope, but I can hope.

my expectations are low for both brett and the offense facing Sabathia. that said, with my expectations being so low, my hopes are high… hoping for a surprise stellar performance from either myers, the offense, or both!

I think there’s a good chance Myers can do it. I extremely optimistic for tonight. I don’t think it’s smart to keep starting Sabathia on 3 days rest over and over. He has to run out of steam sooner or later. I think we’re gonna have a win tonight. Not a whole lot of runs on either side, but I think we’ll squeak out a win, and like I don’t care how we get it.

hmm lets see… didn’t CC throw two awful games last year in the playoffs? anyone have the lines on those games?
also 4 games in 12 days… shouldn’t this man be steroid tested? jk…
i dont think he’ll run out of steam but our guys have to be prepared to capitolize on the few (if any) mistakes CC may make…
also i think we are going to be tested more defensively tonight than yesterday so we have to look sharp in the field… as long as brett keeps the ball down and mixes pitches our D should take care of the rest.
i think we will get a few runs with the potential to string hits together and produce a big inning, i’m guessing the 6th or 7th inning would be the best time to capitolize…

Ryan…Remember Brett is an Ex-Rockstar, I guess being a starter is like being the warm up band

This is also Sabathia’s big career game too, because he’s playing for a contract beyond this point at the end of the season. If Brett is on top of his game tonight, I think we would have a good chance of beating them. Sabathia is a great pitcher, but he can defitinly get tagged hard if this offense ”shines”…Which I might think they might. Lets go Phils!!!

Eb – can’t imagine Brett lowering himself to warm-up band status…so uncoooolll…
I have a good feeling about tonight. I think Myers will do well…but not stay out there much past the 6th. Hope the Madson/Durbin/Romero trio is nice & rested cause I think they’ll see some action.

Myers is the key to everything – CC can be beat, but it won’t happen early and we need to hang with the BrewCrew tonight.

logic suggests that CC mows us down, and who knows which Myers will show up. that said, CT (not to be confused w/ CC) has the right idea – lower expecatations for this game. maybe we’ll be surprised.
Go Phils!!!

I have all the confidence in the world in Brett as long as he can somewhat keep his cool. He can pitch a 3 hit shutout tonight, but could also lose his mind on the mound, get shelled, get yanked in the third by charlie followed by him tackling manuel on his way to the mound like the lunatic he is. He needs to pitch the game tonight, not try to throw the ball threw the backstop. Small-ball is the key to this game. Work counts, get his pitch count up, bunt, steal, 1st to third, and then smack their bullpen around.
