Myers Plays Underdog Role Perfectly

Brett Myers didn’t have his best stuff last night against the Brewers. He wasn’t striking out hitters like Cole Hamels. But he was very strong once he settled in, and had his way against an inexperienced Brewers lineup.
All this while having to hear all week about the dominance of CC Sabathia. Myers:
“I like being the underdog. I’ve always liked it being that way. People will always put you down and say what they want to say about you. But I always liked trying to fight my way back. That’s kind of how I felt.”
Myers relishes this stuff. He loves being doubted, or being altogether forgotten. This game was set up to be a big win for Myers. Luckily, the inexperienced (and downright overrated right now) Corey Hart weakly grounded a double play out to Myers to save his start from blowing up. Once he cleared that hurdle, he was gravy, and he completely convinced everyone of his pitching ability.

the 1-2-3 dp was HUGE! Myers played his underdog role perfectly, with everybody and their mothers assuming that sabathia would dominate. Best part is not only did Brett pitch a solid game, he threw a monkey wrench in sabathias day with his at-bats. they need to keep a level head because they are hot now. hot as a fox in a forest fire

Maybe next time Corey Hart faces Myters, he’d be wearing his sunglasses at night

it’s been great in these first two games watching the top 2 pitchers go out there and prove WHY they’re our top 2 pitchers. everyone likes to talk about the phillies homerun hitting but it’s the pitching that’s been the strength all season and i think it’s going to continue to surprise their opponents. it was also great to see myers overcome his 1st inning struggles he’s prone to. and man will that AB go down as one of the great philly sports moments.

Ever since you guys did an interview with the guys at BrewCrewball.com I have been checking up on them periodically to get there side of the story. It’s funny you mention how Hart is overrated. After reading their blog, I think he will get termedously booed at game 3. They all talk trash on him, and I think Hart is becoming what Pat Burrell was to us back in the day

NATIONAL LEAGUE FAVORITES!
After hardly getting hype after winning the NL East, the Phillies are now the National League favorite to win the pennant. Check it out here http://playoffodds.blogspot.com/2008/10/friday-update.html Very exciting stuff. This mostly has to do with the fact that the dodgers are stunning the cubs in their series. If we won and they won, we would be favored (and have homefield).
Also note how we have the second best odds to win the world series, behind Boston.
These are just odds, mind you, and don’t count towards anything but its still exciting!

Thst was the fire I was talking about from Myers did you see the intensity in his eyes in that at bat, 4 out pitches Sabathia has and he was throwin them all at him, Howard and Utley were baffled by Sabathia, but not Brett he was jumpin out of his shoes like he was Gary Sheffield at the plate.

We did all that without our three big guys (Utley, Howard, and Burrell) doing too much. We have a 2-0 lead and STILL have Jamiie Moyer to pitch. And our bullpen is well rested. AS long as they take it one game at a time October should be a lotta fun

no Durbin yet… Romero is nice and rested.. Lidge helped his cause by just throwing strikes last night instead of trying to nibble
When Utley and Howard aren’t doing much, and you still get a win, its a great thing..
Really the only concern that I have is that our runs have come in a 3-run inning, and a 5-run inning… we’ll need to do a better job of manufacturing runs, and adding to leads in the next few games. As the games get more intense, they need to remember the type of small-ball that can be crucial in the playoffs!
BUT … GO PHILS !!!!!!!!

I ran into one of the players dad’s last night… a guy that used to play in the Majors years ago.. and before the Cubs game started, he told me they were going to get swept by the Dodgers.. and that the Dodgers pitching was really that good. (best ERA in the NL)..
I can’t believe that the Cubs will get swept.. but how good is Lou Pinella’s decision of resting players for the final few games looking now… a few days without seeing LIVE pitching can really destroy a hitters timing.. and I think we’re seeing that a little bit with the Cubs.. That, and the fact that their arms are falling off.

Yeh the Dodgers do have good pitching, but they are lacking that dominant lefty, and I think that is what helped us sweep them a month ago. We struggle against dominant lefties, but can pull out wins against righties. CC Who??? CC Who Baby???!!!!!!!!

the dodgers pitching is better than most give it credit for, but not as good as the phillies. i’m still not convinced kuroda is the right guy to pitch 3rd for them, we’ll see how it plays out.

I really hope the Cubs win game #3 of that series… if nothing else, just to bring the Dodgers back down to earth.. two wins AT wrigley is impressive

Dice, horrible reference to a lame 80′s tune. Don’t quit your day job.

Gary, that may be true, but I know I heard that tune played when Hart walked out to the plate more than once, because then the stupid song sticks in my head for the rest of the day.

Georgie, my fault. All the blame lies squarely on the shoulders of Corey Hart for letting that song be played while he comes out to hit. Or hell, with the way he is hitting, play it as much as possbile.
