Game 4 : National League Division Series
Phillies lead 2-1
Philadelphia Phillies at Milwaukee Brewers
Miller Park, Milwaukee
1 p.m. / 60, partly cloudy
Joe Blanton (9-12, 4.69 ERA) vs. Jeff Suppan (10-10, 4.96 ERA)
With plenty of chances to win game three and the National League Division Series, the Phillies came up short and surrendered a loss to the Brewers. Now Joe Blanton takes the hill in the biggest game of the season.
The Phils will face Jeff Suppan, who has had a tough year but plenty of playoff success.
News & Notes
Greg Dobbs has the start at third base, hitting seventh in the order. Shane Victorino is back at the two-hole, with Jayson Werth hitting sixth. … In his last start against the Phillies, Suppan pitched just 3.2 innings, giving up six earned runs in a loss. … Blanton lowered his ERA in each of his last four starts, giving up four, three, two and one run respectively. … If the Phils want to reach the NLCS to face the Dodgers, Chase Utley needs to step up. He’s hitting .600 against Suppan.
The Lineup
Jimmy Rollins / SS
Shane Victorino / CF
Chase Utley / 2B
Ryan Howard / 1B
Pat Burrell / LF
Jayson Werth / RF
Greg Dobbs / 3B
Carlos Ruiz / C
Joe Blanton / P
Your Gameday Beer
Back to an old favorite: Newcastle Brown Ale. Served at many bars and taprooms in your local vicinity, Newcastle is a traditional English brown, made with a nutty flavor and caramel. Clint Eastwood loves it. So you should too. Here’s the deal: Today is a big game. A must win, almost. Let’s get down to business. Enjoy your beer, cook up some pork roll, and get to the television. Root, root, root for your Phils. Let’s get ‘em to the NLCS.
Go Phillies!

Seriously. That strike zone was ridiculous yesterday.

Joe’s a tough one to guage, we gave up a good package to get him and in most of his starts he hasn’t pitched like the ‘solid’ Joe Blanton expected who has made a name for eating innings which he hasn’t yet done with anything resembling consistency in Philly.

Pat almost stroked one there – oppo even. Maybe his stroke is back – he hasn’t been striking out that much lately. At least he’s been making contact.

the strike zone was working in bush’s favor, but not moyer’s. sometimes the home team gets the calls, that’s just the reality of the situation.

wow, just imagine what would’ve happened if the brewers actually started Gallardo today instead of Suppan. it could’ve been a different game to start.

If Werth’s ball were to land, it would have been a base hit.

@T Marty – It depends on the field. In Milwaukee, this ball would have been in play had Counsell not made that catch. Some places, it’s a dead ball, other places, it’s in play.
I know in Tampa, if the ball hits the rafters it’s considered a HR, no matter where the ball falls afterwards. “Ground rule” doesn’t just refer to balls that bounce out of play for a double.

zack are you saying ruiz doesn’t have a good arm? because he definitely does.

christopher, no, I think it was just a stupid thing for the announcer to say, like Ruiz is pleased with himself every time he makes those throws to 1st, give me a break, like Ruiz turns to the umpire and says, “Did you see that? I throw very well, no?”, like he goes home to his wife and that’s all he talks about at dinner time.

Well he’s certainly not the Blanton Cincy almost gave up Bailey and Votto for but if he can go 6 strong against the Dodgers then we have a real fighting shot at doing some damage this year.
