Odds And Ends: Manuel, Garza, Madson, Honors

Before game three:
- Charlie Manuel puts it on the bulletin board:
“Now, let me tell you something. We’ve got some more baseball to play. And you’re like, ‘I’ve got a lot of faith in our guys and we’re gonna win this thing.’ ”
Alright, Charlie, we’ll follow you.
- Rays game three starter Matt Garza has some material for us:
“There’s even more noise at the Trop. Whatever noise they bring, I’m all for it.”
I mean, maybe if you factor in the Phillies fans chanting during game two, you might say … oh come on, Matt. This guy is clueless. I really, really hope the offense awakens tonight. And everyone going to the game tonight: Scream your faces off.
- Jim Salisbury writes Ryan Madson’s recent performance will make him a richer man next season. He’s eligible for arbitration once more and made $1.4M last season
I would assume he gets around $3M or so next year, especially with his agent being the one, the only, Scott Boras.
- Chase Utley and Brad Lidge were named to the 2008 Sporting News National League All-Star team Friday. It’s the second consecutive year Utley has reached this honor, and the first time Lidge has done so.
Congratulations, guys.

Yahoo sports has a article about a guy who bet a 100 dollars on rays in vegas. stands to win 25.000. If it was me I would have went to vegas before series and bet 10,000 on phillies this way that 100 bet would get me at least 10,000 if rays lose he get nothing.

mikemike, smart play there. I wish I had the $10,000 to throw down on it way back when.

Question – I am pretty sure this is Pat Burrells last year of his contract. True or false?

Brooks, this is the last year of Burrell’s current contract, which he signed in 2003 (6 yrs/$50 Million). However, Burrell has made it well known he wants to stay in Philly, and with there next to nothing on the outfield free agent market this next year (except Manny), I think the Phillies will give serious thought to Burrell returning. I would guess they would offer something in the 3 year / 36-40 million range, with maybe a club/mutual, or vesting option for a 4th year.

Hamels and Vic stand to make a lot of money, too.

Yeah, they do…but they will likely be in the $3-5 million range (Vic) and $5-8 million range (Hamels) I would imagine. Just a guess…not sure if Vic is arbitration eligible this year or if he’s got one year left before he is. I think Hamels will be, as he’ll likely be qualified as a “super two.”

If you are making $3 million dollars a year, you have nothing to worry about.
If you made $3 million dollars a year, wouldn’t you be happy?

Some Baseball players never make more than a couple million dollars a year.

Yeah, their families will be just fine. I’d be happy making $3 million in the next 20 years combined.
After thinking of it, Vic won’t get $3-$5. I think he’d probably end up around $1.5-2 next year. Hamels will make a lot more, though.
