Odds And Ends: Myers, Stairs, LA Times, History

Some more odds and ends as you prepare for game five:
- Todd Zolecki reports Brett Myers was in the bullpen during the ninth inning of game four, in case he needed to relieve Brad Lidge.
Lidge worked an arduous, one-out eighth. Having Myers ready was a very smart move. He would’ve been my emergency choice, as I even thought about him out there when Lidge started the ninth.
- Jim Salisbury has the final word on the Matt Stairs home run.
Read if you want to revisit that titanic blast.
- Ross Newhan, a fantastic columnist for years and Hall of Famer (and father of major leaguer David Newhan), wrote a special column for the LA Times saying the reason the Dodgers are down 3-1 is because the Phils are … simply … better.
Thank you, Ross. Sure, the Phils have seen a few lucky bounces, but they’ve won because they’ve hit in clutch situations, pitched well enough and managed strategically enough.
- Bleacher Report points out each time the Phils and Dodgers met in the NLCS, the winner lost in the World Series.
Meh. If I’m worried, I’m worried that the Rays boast a bunch of hitters who don’t seem fazed by the bright lights, and a pretty good starting rotation. And the Red Sox can still come back. That said, I’m focused on game five tonight. Don’t bother me with World Series chatter.

My senior citizen co-worker bitched me out for saying I was watching the Phillies over the debate – I explained the Phillies make it this far into the postseason less often than we vote for president

Can someone write an article about how the loss of Rowand was supposed to keep the Phils from making the playoffs, but Victorino and Werth provide the production and leadership that was lost with Rowand?

Hey MP, I got crap too for putting the Phillies ahead of those clowns running for president. And I’m a political junkie that would usually NEVER miss a debate. Priorities, eveyone. Priorities. GO COLE!!!!

Larry, Vic and Werth are so much better than Rowand and Rowand is a fine player that I was disappointed to see leave. Shane has become almost superhuman and Werth, to me, is a calm, reassuring figure that the Phillies need. I love Werth’s style of play (what an arm). Someone said about the comparison between Rowand and Victorino that Rowand would crash into the fence and want you to know that he crashed into the fence but that Victorino just crashes into the fence and makes the play. Thought that was a pretty insightful statement.

that palin website is easily one of the funniest things i’ve seen all day (i’m the kind of guy who sees funny stuff all the time)
i cant even eat i’m so stoked (well that and my girlfriend is making pork tenderloin tonight) … careful with the WS talk boys and girls, didnt’ you read the phillies.com article on the 10 teams who have come back from 3 game deficits in the past? the annoying bosox did it last year against the indians and in ’04 against the spankees… lets win tonight and THEN let the floodgates open…

Gotta win Game 5 first. I’m worried about Hamels b/c he had 2 or 3 big starts finishing off a series during the regular season and lost all of them. I think everyone’s counting their chickens before they hatch.

Vic showed the difference the other night when he put his hand up to feel the wall to make sure he did not run into it and drop the ball. Rowand would have slammed in the wall and possibly lost the ball.

Gavin,
Hamels did blow some regular season games but I think he finally decided he wa a big game pitcher and will do well tonight. That being said we definitley all have to try to focus (it is tough) on only tonights game.

Rowand plays balls-out hustle all the time.. and did it because that was the way he was taught to play the game.. very similar to Utley
Victorino covers more ground, and has a better arm… making him in my opinion, as good, if not better than Rowand..
And he was like $9,120,000 cheaper than Rowand this season too… another smart move for the Phillies UNDERRATED and UNDERAPPRECIATED front office..
Give them credit for putting this team together.. We would be better with Sabathia and Harden, yes… but would’ve given up the world for them.. and neither of them looked great in the playoffs.. so its easy to look back and say what they should or shouldn’t have done… but because we are where we are right now.. we need to give them the credit they deserve

I have come to realize that Hamels IS a big game pitcher, he just chokes against our division particularly the Mets.

that’s genius having myers as a possible second closer out there in case lidge gets worn out. definitely a great idea for the world series. maybe brett could be a 8th inning guy in the right situation.

CC went what? 11 -2 with the crewers? and a loss to us in the postseason? blanton was 4 – 0 but we won like, 10 out of 14 or 15 starts and he’s pitched two decent games for us in the postseason… gillick is either really smart, or a warlock

Yea I’m willing to pay $1 more than whatever price Fran and Chuck offer… Like The Price is Right.
BUT seriously… obviously we’d like our chances better if we had another picther more top-rotation-ish than Blanton… but we would have sold our farm to get one of those guys..
Since we were all on board with hanging on to Carrasco and Marson, etc.. we have to be happy with how the move worked out.. leaving us our top farm pieces in the process, you can’t ask for much more

Myers turned his ankle rounding second. One of the reasons we need them to win tonight and give him plenty of rest. It did not sound like a big deal.

Not to mention any names.. but
The two teams that are currently leading their respective Championship Series’… are both allowing 3.5 runs per game to their opponents through 8 postseason games.
The AL team is averaging 6.5 runs to their opponents 3.5.
The NL team is averaging 4.375 runs to their opponents 3.5.
yikes
