PHILS CLINCH NLCS BERTH!

Joe Blanton subdued the Brewers, and Pat Burrell blasted them, as the Phillies defeated Milwaukee, 6-2. The Phils won the best-of-five National League Division Series, 3-1, and will play the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League championship. Game one is Thursday at Citizens Bank Park.
Burrell hit two home runs in the game. The first was the gamebreaker, a three-run stunner off Jeff Suppan with two strikes and two outs in the third inning. It gave the good guys a 4-0 lead and settled things down. Burrell then knocked a big insurance homer in the eighth inning. After a second-half slump, Burrell redeemed himself tremendously with just two swings.
Blanton was beautiful, striking out seven in six innings while giving up just one run — a no-doubter by Prince Fielder. Blanton threw first-pitch strikes, had Milwaukee hitters swinging early and late, and worked efficiently after a high-count first inning. As far as midseason acquisitions, Blanton has come up huge.
Blanton set the bullpen for three paint-by-numbers innings. Ryan Madson took two of them and gave up just a garbage run, while Brad Lidge closed out the ninth for the third time in the series.
Back to the offense. Jayson Werth backed Burrell’s first bomb with a solo home run, while Jimmy Rollins led off the contest with a longball. Meanwhile, Greg Dobbs contributed with two hits in a starting spot. With Chase Utley and Ryan Howard slumping in the NLDS, the rest of the offense has picked it up. And Burrell joined them in game four, leading the Phils to the NLCS for the first time since 1993.

Complete team effort in this series and a solid Win. Those who may have come up short on the batting end came up big defensively. If you had to pick an MVP for the series?
I might go with Vic, but if I could give it to starting rotation, I would.
redsoxfan…you probably think “Gator” Greenwell is a reference to the Green Monster. Go watch your Jimmy Fallon movies, you major league fruit.

I will say I have rooted for the Red Sox the past few times they’ve gone to the dance. I’ve actually admired their fans for putting up with years of garbage teams, and if anyone can understand Philly fans’ frustrations, I would think it would be a Red Sox fan. If so, I’m sure we could all agree to disagree on which one of us would win if we faced each other this year, but to come on a Phillies blog to badmouth the team when none of us have been running ours about yours is just plain ignorant.
And as far as the “winning/losing fans” comments are concerned…last I checked I don’t think you got a ring for any of the wins the Sox have achieved. So I don’t know what makes you think you are a “winner” and Philly fans are “losers.” Just because your team shelled out more money and happened to win a World Series? That makes YOU a winner by association? Hmm…I don’t get it exactly.

A special thanks to Ed Wade for the Brad Lidge trade. I wonder what other kinds of garbage we can send to him this off season for the likes of Roy Oswalt or Hunter Pence.

Why isn’t Mr. RedSoxFan drinking at McGreevy’s on Boylston St? Why would a true Red Sox fan waste his time on the internet when he could be drinking at America’s First Sports Bar?
Or is he just a poser who doesn’t even know the words to “Tessie”?

On tv just now on ESPN…John Kruk just insinuated that he didnt know how the phillies would do against the dodgers because they are scoring runs in 1 or 2 innings..he sounded kind of negative toward us and positive toward the dodgers..
WHAT THE F…THIS SOB SOUNDS LIKE A F___IN TRAITOR..

The problem with Red Sox fans is they think that THEY as fans actually won the championship, not the team.
Let’s take a lesson from philliesnation.com’s resident red sox fan and remember that its the team that works hard for us and we should all be humbly proud of them and our city, not of ourselves.

sweet success – it’s been a long wait for the Phils to celebrate their upcoming play in the NL championship! Pat the Bat was given two pitches during the game that seem to be in slow motion right to the heart of his swing. He didn’t hesitate and swung beautifully. Running around the bases, he had a smile as wide as the stadium roof, (yes I saw it too Georgie). During his time alone on the dugout step after the hit, he seemed to take a healthy sigh, still smilling, like an awful weight had been lifted from his shoulders. Way to cap off the series Pat.

people seem to miss it but kruk is ALWAYS negative on the phillies. he didn’t think they would make the playoffs this year or last year. he is a bitter old bum and is lucky to have a job.

Cy Blanton has to get the Ashburn, he was HUGE!!! Love the way Madson is pitching too right now, he is locked in. Also thought it was nice to see the celebration (or lack there of) on field after the last out ….. they want more. So do I. So do we. I like it, the composure, they are relaxed! Just need a few more key hits, and we would have totally dominated the Brew Crew.
LA, bring ‘em on. Brings back memories of the 70′s. Questions for the Phaithful, who would you rather have defensively in LF, pat or the bull?

It’s wierd ground when the baseball media focuses on the Phils since the focus is usually elsewhere. When it does happen it gets highlighted that we on the whole are a pretty negative bunch, not a knock but we got so use to loosing it’s just the way we are and have seen so many collapses we focus more on the bad than good.
Can we beat the Dodgers? Sure we can but not many can say it without the historical pesimism coming up.

Hey Guys! been a Phillies fan all my life. Although, I currently live in SC. I also spent 20 years in Boston. As for the Boston fan, they are all rabid. It’s inbred. I was born in philly, and still support all the teams.
It is very important, that the middle of the order hits. Coste needs to replace Ruiz. I don’t think he hit a ball out of the infield. Dobbs needs to start every game. Charlie has to pull the pitchers sooner.
If he do move on, Dobbs can be the dh.
But, a lot of water needs to go over the dam. The dodgers did play well. But, the cubs had lost the scent. But, we have never hit Lowe well.
I am looking forward to an exciting end.
Go Phillies.

You know sometimes I wish I was a phillies fan . But they never win anything so why waste my time. Tomorrow on the way to work in center city, will wear my sox shirt and hat. When I get off at broad and chestnut. Can’t wait to see the phillies fans faces.

So excited about how it went down. I was at the Eagles game today with an AM radio listening to 1210 for the whole game. It was great to see all the support the Phils were getting and the massive cheers. Lots of Phillies gear at the Linc. And something I never thought I’d hear was the constant “Let’s Go Phillies” chants going on at the Linc.
It was great. So stoked about the NLCS!

NJ, the the Eagles game was great for the first quarter, but then it turned into a stinker quickly. But nobody seemed to get too down and out in the stands (at least where I was sitting). When Pat Burrell hit the 3 run home run and I announced it to the fans near me, everyone erupted. It was glorious!

SJ- Must have been great to experience that, the one thing we Phils fans can never be critisized for is passion. What happened in that game though, seemed like it was being treated like a practise game after taking the lead and couldn’t re-assert themselves until it was too late… Also what went down on that play before one of the Skins FG’s when Cambell took a knee on 3rd down with plenty of time on the clock?

You know what, I had no idea. I wondered that myself. We had no idea what the hell Cambell was doing. We couldn’t really see what happened exactly. We had all thought he spiked the ball or something. It was quite confusing.
I can’t explain what caused the Eagles to put out that clunker. It was pretty ugly. Lot of obnoxious Redskins fans trying to taunt and gloat, but nobody really paid attention. You’d be proud, a lot of that was drowned out by “Let’s go Phillies” chants.

When I get home I’m banning that red sox fan. This is a day of joyous celebration, not one to hear about Terry Francona, how the Dodgers will beat the Phillies or any other such things. I truely appreciate fans from other teams coming to our site to gongradulate us. Even though us as fans don’t pick up a bat or wear a glove, I’d like to feel that we willed a Game 2 victory at least.
There is no way I’m going to allow some slobs to ruin that for us. Not now, not ever.

Also, it was really great hearing for once some Phillies love at the Linc, because usually you hear the Eagles chant when things are going bad over at Citizens Bank Park.
Great reversal. Like I said, a lot of love for the Phils today. The fact that I had the radio with me listening to our broadcast made us the popular guys in our section. Lot of Eagles jerseys and red Phillie caps asking for updates constantly.

joe, can’t agree with starting coste over ruiz or dobbs over feliz. i see what you’re saying, but ruiz has handled the pitchers so well all season. i think coste is a good catcher too and obviously has a superior bat, but right now getting continued great pitching is the most important thing. and feliz is so good defensively, while dobbs is a great bat to bring off the bench in a clutch spot. i do like mixing it up now and then, like charlie did today with dobbs. and i think coste will get a start, maybe two before the post season is over. but normally, they should stick with pedro and ruiz.

I agree a day of joy … my apologies to everyone else. This has been too long coming. If we get pitching like this, anything is possible, especially as more of the bats come to life. This is truly a bright day after many years of dark. Anything is possible. Thank you Phils.

What I wouldn’t give for either A) a three game tear by the Angels to kick the Red Sox’s asses right out of the postseason, or B) a prominent ass whipping at the hands of the Rays in the ALCS

Christopher, I like the Dobbs start with Feliz coming in late as a defensive replacement. It gives us a hot bat in the first six innings, and a very capable bat but great defensive upgrade late in the game. I liked it a lot myself.

Look guy’s..This is a random question. I know it’s too early to think about this, but it’s only right around the corner. After we win the world series (lol), we all know Howard is expected to make BIG bucks. What do you think? Think we’ll lock him up long term, or just throw him another measley 10 mil he won during arbitartion, and maybe than some? I hope whatever it is they decide to do, doesn’t leave even more bad taste in his mouth.

“I always said, when I got here, that I wanted to try to change the tradition,” Rollins said. “I said it to myself, ‘We need to change the mentality, change the way people think about this organization, change the way the young kids feel about being in this organization.’ And the only way you can do that is by winning.”
Maybe we give him the benefit of the doubt about previous comments being mis-interpreted, irreguardless since those comments he has taken the kind on of responsiblity he talks about.

Chris, if he leads us to the World Series, and/or a World Series title, I think they look at giving him a long term deal. If he has a poor NLCS and/or WS, I think they continue the “wait and see” approach. If they throw money at him and he continues his “offensive slide” in the way of average and strikeouts, it would make him harder to move with a bulky contract should they so desire later on. If they just keep him year to year at this point, it may be more attractive to other teams, as they can negotiate with him themselves. I really think it depends on what ultimately happens to the Phillies this year, and how much of it is due to Howard.

Re-signing Howard’s more to do with him than the Phils unless the ownership interceeds. Howards happy to go year-to-year expecting something around what Teixeria will get plus inflation when he hits FA.
Unless the Phils FO/Ownership are prepared to throw an obscene amount probably well over $150m at him, the most we can expect is a Holliday type deal to avoid arbitration hearings.
