Phils Unable To Push ‘Em Home, Lose Game 3

Wasted opportunities resulted in a game three loss, as the Phillies fell to the Brewers, 4-1. The series is now 2-1 in the Phils favor, leading to a Joe Blanton-Jeff Suppan match Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee.
Things didn’t look good from the beginning. Jamie Moyer tried to hit his spots, but whether it was a small strike zone or off-the-mark pitching, Moyer couldn’t get it done. He only surrendered two runs, but his early exit signaled a four-inning bullpen run, and Milwaukee got quick life so they could settle in and keep the Phils down.
And boy were the Phils down. Our old friend the RISP crept in, and the Phils only plated one run despite leading off three innings with extra-base hits. That’s unacceptable, especially against Dave Bush and Co. That’s not to say Bush is bad — on the contrary, the righty pitched very well, mixing his stuff and keeping fastball hitters such as Jayson Werth and Pat Burrell off balance.
And that’s another big problem. Werth and Burrell, among others, looked poor out there. Werth had the triple (that probably could’ve been a Corey Hart catch) and a double (off Eric Gagne), but overall, they were easy strikeout targets. Add to that myriad fly outs, and it was easy to see the Phils were pressing, trying valiantly to end the series. When the Phils got something going — in the ninth — Pedro Feliz swung at the first pitch and grounded into a double play with the bases loaded and nobody out. Dumb, dumb baseball.
Most critics, experts, etc., said the Phils would win in four. And here we are ready to play game four, yet I don’t feel particularly confident. I have faith, but I have doubt. Oh, the doubt.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m sick & tired of watching Ruiz, and Burrell struggle at the plate, mainly Ruiz. Everytime he’s at bat, your already prepared for a ground out…He is absolutely TERRIBLE, and dreadful to watch. Burrell on the other hand, needs to be taken out too, and replaced by Dobbs. The Phils need to come together this next game, and not rely on Hamels for game 5.

…I’d be happy just to be in the playoffs, not cry about having a 2-1 lead in the five game series.

back to the first comment… Burrell needs to take a seat. You can’t sit Ruiz… he’s handling the staff really well. Dobbs is a guy that had really good numbers and didn’t start today. Something like .400 against bush lifetime. Don’t see what they had to “save” him off the bench.

Cholly gotta bench Pat tomorow he’s killing us…I say put Dobbs or Jenkins in LF tomorrow because Pats just not getting the job done and you can’t keep someone in the lineup thats not getting it done,Ruiz on the other had gets a free pass because he handle the pitchers well,Pats in there to hit the ball.

I was going to rant about Pedro Feliz’s big stinker in the ninth, but that’s unfair to the rest of the team.

I agree that you can’t sit Ruiz as he is a good handler of the Phillies pitchers and also a good defensive catcher but you might pitch-hit for him later in the game if you are behind. Feliz just looked awful at the plate tonight and especially in the ninth inning swinging at the first pitch. Wonder what he was thinking; if he was thinking at all. Phillies need to get Dobbs in there somehow for his offense.
Tough situation for Moyer tonight with an umpire that did not give him the calls on the outside corner of the plate and the patient Brewer hitters.

Gotta put Victorino back in the 2-hole. He has been hitting and needs to be on base early.

Tough loss, because Bush is a garbage righty. Now the pressure will be on the Phils to close out in 4 and avoid giving Sabathis a chance for redemption.

Cholly should go back with the lineup we had when we beat CC Sabathia.

I agree with you Tim in regards to not ranting about Feliz but the guy is a well-paid professional baseball player at bat in a critical situation supposedly trying to help his team win an important NLDS playoff game and he swings at the first pitch and the rest is history.

Chris I. even though Cooch is not very good at the plate, he is keeping this pitching staff in check… (find me a better backstop/game manager in the al at this moment). Even if we have to suck it up with Ruiz in there right now, he is better than Coste behind the plate. Why don’t you talk about the putrid play of our middle lineup. They right now are terrible. I would hope that you would focus on the 3-4-5 part of our lineup and realize, that not onlly is the Brewers strategy to keep opur bg hitters out of the game and in the park, they do have their chances at doing something special and they come up with a fly out or ground out..or K for that matter. The bottom of the lineup gave us the lead in the first two games and is carrying us through the playoffs so far.

I don’t know man, I’m not saying he isn’t doing his job behind the plate, because he is…Great Job! But I think Coste can handle the position just as well (Except in the 9th inning) When we bring in Lidge. That’s when I think Ruiz is needed most.

We are screwed. Don’t deserve to be in the postseason, etc. etc.
Seriously, Sunday is a must-win. If we don’t, then Game 5 is an almost definite loss.

The bottom line, you’ve scored 6 runs in 27 innings, the offense is pathetic. Rollins utley burrell and Howard are terrible so far. And
You’re blaming werth tim? Please. Who else had a double a triple and run scored?

Awesome stuff. Let’s blame werth who was 2 for 4 with 5 bases and a run scored and an assist. What an awful performance. Worse than Rollins utley burrell and Howard for sure

I don’t think Fat Joe is the right guy to send to the mound tomorrow i think he’s gonna get rocked and Jeff Suppan has a reputation a big game pitcher (Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS)…It looks like the Phils will be the first NL team to blow a 2-0 lead in a best of 5 series.

That swing at the first pitch by Feliz KILLED us…. Bases loaded, 0 outs, top of ninth. Seriously, that had SPOILED SAVE written all over it…CLEARLY, Feliz wasn’t part of the Phillies 07 and he got a bit too anxious. We need Dobbs… Feliz is good defensively, but we NEED offense right now.

pleassee bench pat burrell..he is absolutely providing nothing for the phillies. His strength in the 1st half of the season (arguably one of the best in his carreer) was exclusivley hr’s and RBI’s, particularly with Runners In Scoring Position (RISP). He’s not known as a great defensive player, and it’s shown in his lack of athleticism and being able to chase down “catchable balls.” Coinciding with his sluggish base running, Pat Burrell, without the fervor of RBI’s and HR’s from thie first half of the season simply hasn’t produced. There are plenty of people to replace him such as Jenkins and Bruntlett. Both of those players are providing younger talent than Burrell, more athleticism, and just as good a chance to hit a ball as lackluster Pat “the missing Bat” Burrell. Bench him.

I’m hoping that Charlie runs out the following line-up to get things going a bit:
Rollins
Utley
Victorino
Howard
Burrell
Dobbs
Werth
Ruiz
Blanton
Call me crazy, but this lineup is decent offensively and avoids back-to-back lefty hitters. Utley and Howard back-to-back has not been helping us. I know folks say to bench Burrell, but we’ve seen down the stretch how he can hit a key homerun here and there, so I’d leave him in.

Did anyone else wonder why Charlie pulled Moyer as early as he did? He had settled in, and he gave us a better chance than the bullpen. Condrey gave up a run I don’t see Moyer giving up, and the early call to the pen meant Eyre got left in longer than he should have. Pulling Moyer with two outs and a runner on first made little sense to me, and it probably changed the game in the last few innings.

I’ve just read an interesting stat that we’ve scored in just 3 of 25 innings, the offense was inept last night and failed to drive guys in the night before and it’ll take an offense showing up to win to close this one out.
I agree with benching Burrell although I’d start Stairs.

Charlie was trying to ignite something with a Stairs pinch hitting for Moyer, Charlie has settled into when nothings happening it’s longball or nothing and when rallying the offense seems to give nothing by pressing and slugging right into the fielders gloves.

Questionable decision by Charlie, why put Eyre back out there and not let Ryan take over in the 8th? Made no sense.
Today, we need base runners. Thats what it is all about. Be patient at the plate (Feliz), and start Dobbs over Stairs or Jenkins.
We win this game today folks, and move onto NLCS.

it’s over before it even started. the crowd today will keep the phillies down all game, the brewers will win game 4, and then start sabathia in game 5. i don’t think the fans at CBP will have any life in them to even get into sabathia’s head again, and the phils lose in 5. i’m afraid that’s how it’s going to happen.

To me a lot of the Phils’ troubles go back to the lack of moves by Gillick. Bullpen and right hand power were needed back at the trade deadline and are still needed today. Werth, Ruiz and Feliz are not championship caliper starters. Manny sure would have looked good in our lineup now.

It’s amazing that two days ago most of you doubters were talking about the possibility of the Phils going to the World Series. Jesus Chist, J-Roll is right about the frontrunners in this town. Relax, it’s one game to a team that was fired up becuase it was that cities first playoff game in 26 years. Don’t go near any bridges people….

This is a very inconsistent team, especially their offense, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call them “slobs” yet, Rob. I hope that was your 3am state of mind talking. I am trying to stay positive for the game today, but if they are not hitting, don’t know if the nerves can take the whole game. I agree with the person above who said the Phillie fans won’t be as pumped for a game 5 as the other 2 games, it’s just our nature after being screwed so many times by our teams.

I’m going to be the optimist here. The phils bats will break out today vs Suppan. He’s a much better matchup than Bush (b/c he doesn’t throw quite as much junk). blanton will give up his share, but the phils will win this game something like 7-4.
Although I must say, I was fairly confident yesterday as well. I figured since I used to get hits off of Bush in little league, the Phils would do the same.

c’mon guys. HAVE SOME PHAITH! i know, realistically, the phillies have been like this all season. come storming out, then the hitting gets spotty, we leave runners on, etc. but, we always find a way to get the job done.
would you really expect a philly team to get through the playoffs unscathed?
GO PHILS!!!

I didn’t read the rest of the thread to see if someone else mentioned this, but I’ll mention it. Tim, you predicted the Phils to win game 1 and 2 and lose 3 then they’d win 4 on a great pitching performance by Blanton. I hope you’re right.

As often happens, the first inning will be key. If we can score early it’d be great, but most importantly Blanton cannot give up any first inning runs and force us to play catch up against the crowd.

I always thought we were going to do it in four, even after we beat Sabathia. It wouldn’t be very Philadelphian to execute a perfect sweep. We’ve got it today though, I know it.

It will be important for the Phils to jump on Suppan early. I felt like the team was pressing. (I know I was pressing at home last night). Take the crowd out of it a little and give yourself some leeway.
I thought Moyer got screwed by Runge last night personally.

I have a good feeling after getting some rest and taking my mind off of last night. Today is THE DAY. Fat Joe will go 7, and the Phils’ bats will feast of Jeff “The Last” Suppan. He’ll be gone around by the 4th or 5th. Vic in the 2 hole would make sense, with Werth hitting 5 and either Stairs or Jenkins 6th, but I don’t know if Cholly will do that.
LET’S GO PHILS!

I think everyone needs to just take a deep breath and relax a little…all the so called experts picked us in four, just because we beat CC doesn’t mean we aren’t going to win in four…I think that Blanton is going to come out today and pitch well enough to get us a win, someone in the middle of the lineup will have some kind of big hit to win it for us and I will be screaming my balls off in section 305 on thursday against the dodgers…Lets get the confidence back, lets get the swagger, today is when the bats wake up!

Yawn…looks like another troll here…
On another note, none of us thought we’d win Game 2 against CC. But we expected to win 1 and 3. In either case, we’re still 2-1 going into the 4th game, so we’re right where we thought we would be. Today is a new day, we could score 20 runs for all we know.
On yet another note, Phuck the Red Sox. Go swordfight with your brother or raid your mom’s underwear drawer or something.

The team lost as a team last night. I thought Moyer got a hard time from the home plate ump. His 4 innings may have been the toughest I’ve watched all year. There is no excuse for the poor performance at the plate. I agree with one of the posters above. If Burrell isn’t going to hit, put someone else in there and use him to pinch hit. I always have Pat’s back but this is the damn playoffs and if he’s not going to help win games, then he shouldn’t be out there. That goes for the lot of them! They seriously need to step up! Because even if they do manage to survive this series, they will need to play a hell of a lot better than this against the Dodgers!
