Report: Kazmir Likely To Start Game 1 vs. Hamels

Earlier I wrote that James Shields might go in game one, on three-days rest, for the Rays. Looks like that won’t be the case. Scott Kazmir is likely to be the game one starter, with Shields pitching game two. The Phillies will give Cole Hamels the ball in game one, followed by Brett Myers in game two.

Makes sense for them to throw out Kazmir and trying and stiffle the lefties right of the bat and as they have 3 soft aces and not the 1 stand-out it makes sense.
I looked at the numbers and both Kazmir and Shields have very scary home numbers and although Hamels and Myers have barely seen the inside of a dome they’ve been hit the couple of times they have pitched in one…
I’ve got a good feeling though, these Phils have given reason to trust unconditionally recently.

I’m worried about the fact that we’ll be playing in a dome…the white ceiling + artificial turf. I could see Pat dropping a fly ball right now. Ugh.
I’m worried that if we lose the first 2, we’ll have Jamie at home, and Blanton –both are good but they are not as great as Hamels and Myers at home, feeding off the crowd.
It SUCKS that Myers won’t get an AB in this WS. Phuck the DH rule.

I am confident of at least a split in Tampa, 2 of 3 at home and wrap it up in 6. A strong outing by Hamels in game 1 will set the tone.
I think Moyer will do well against this lineup in Game 3. What we really need is for the bats to pick up early in the series, which can be tough after a long layoff.
The turf is a concern….it’s been a long time since we played on any artificial surface.
The wait has been eternal for this series to start.

I may not fit in very well here.
I am not worried about a thing. I’m treating this WS like I treated the Superbowl w/Eagles and the Cheaters.
I was glad to buy Madden the next year. I’m currently playing my MLB The Show for PSP and look forward to the 2009 version.
I’m just quite happy that my Phils are in the big show. (the WS)
Even in the game I play, when I play vs the Mets, the announcers mention that a DP against me would be a good thing. My only recourse is to humiliate Pedro M. of the Mets.

After Moyer’s bad outings in Milwaukee and LA it will be a nice change for him at home. I think the fans will help him right his ship. It may not be a stellar performance, but I think he will keep us in the game.
And, I agree, Hamels in Game 1 is HUGE. A win really does set the tone and takes the pressure off. Think about it, the Phillies haven’t been behind or even tied in the two other series this fall. They need to stick with that trend and they’ll be ok.

I think what the Phils should do with the rotation is obviously Hamels game 1, then if they win throw Moyer game 2. Moyer won’t let that crowd get to him. Then Myers at home for game 3. Myers just feeds off that home energy so much. That setup would be contigent on Hamels winning game 1, which I think he will do.

Yet again, the Phillies get no love. Consider the kiss-ass Ken Rosenthal in today’s FoxSports article.
“The Rays are good enough to beat the Phillies. In fact, they should beat the Phillies.”
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8684190?MSNHPHMA
Really, Ken? A team that has never had a winning record outside of this season? A team that’s “defined” closer doesn’t even have a major league (regular season) win or save? Not taking anything away from the Rays, because they certainly are a good team this year, but once again the media treats the Phillies like they are trash. How about a roster with players who are reigning MVP’s, Gold Gloves, Silver Sluggers, and All-Stars? Does nothing for you?
I guess time will tell…maybe Rosenthal is right, or maybe he ends up eating crow and kissing Pat Burrell’s ass some more after the Phillies win. I find it ironic that they can pick the Phils to lose one second, and then jump on their bandwagon and suck up to the players after the games to make sure they get an interview. Then right back at it again. I hope the Phils sweep the Rays just to stick it to them.

Rosenthal is just another reason why FOX is a lousy sport network. They are lousy at baseball, lousy at football, lousy at news coverage, just plain lousy.

I kind of agree that Moyer should throw Game 2. Even though he has been hit hard in the playoffs, he has the ability to quiet the Rays lineup dominated by inexperienced hitters. The Brewers and Dodgers had some vets who preached patience and did with Moyer but the WS is a whole new ballgame. Plus, Myers seems to be dominant at home this year lately. I think his temperment is best suited for a raucous Philly crowd no matter how the series looks on Saturday!
I say Phils win 5-2 in Game 1.

I mean, not that we haven’t beaten this topic to death but since the Manny vs. the Red Sox story line didn’t play itself out and the media and broadcasters don’t have much to play off of, they’re setting this up as a Philadelphia vs. the World storyline. The cute, young rookies who did the improbable and the only thing standing in their way are the ugly, neanderthals from Hostile City — we boo’d Santa Claus. Did you know that? They’re even using the “Rocky” analogies for the Rays instead of us.
There’s not much we can do — except win.

Agreed that Myers should throw Game 3 being the emotional pitcher he is. What happens if he gets rattled early and doesn’t have the home crowd behind him to give him a boost. Either way all pitchers have to pitch the best game of their careers. The Rays lineup is very good even though they are young. They are a great home team so if we can leave TB splitting the first 2 games the Phils should feel good.

What about Moyer getting to pitch at home in Game#3.. that could be huge!
Myers didn’t pitch that great at home in Game#2 of the NLCS.. in fact, he was horrible..
5 innings pitched, 5 Earned Runs allowed, 6 hits, 4 walks, 6 Ks
His bat got him the “W” as the pitcher..

i like your thoughts therookie300 but i would even swap blanton in game 2 if hamels wins game one…blanton gave up 4 in 6 when he pitched against the rays earlier in the season but those 4 all came in the 5th and 6th innings…1hr allowed…give myers and moyer the nod at home

Rosenthal is one of those pick the story guys who wants the be the ‘I told you so guy’ and if his prediction goes bad it’s ok because it’s a smaller fall. He has a record of picking against the Phils and I’d go so far as to say he’d bet against he Phils in an intersquad game.

Jamie, I have to disagree with you. Just because Phillie isn’t getting the love you think it deserves doesn’t mean it doesn’t. I cannot think of one media source last year that didn’t say the Phillies would sweep the Rockies … or at least beat them in 4.
The Rays have had an incredible season. Defied every baseball talking head. They swept the Red Sox, Cubs and Angels. Had the best series win/loss record against other teams. Won 97 games in argueably one of the best divisions in baseball. After blowing game 5 and still winning … with ALL the media saying it’s over … Boston will come back just like they did against the Yankees and Indians. They are good. I think it will be a great world series between 2 very good teams.

Jamie has been part of that sweet tune that has brought us to this point. He needs to start game 3 and Just Joe game 4.
Blanton does have post season experience with the A’s (alright, 2 innings) but it does not matter at all. Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins are going showtime.
Phils in 5.

I think Jimmy Rollins has a big series as well…
Remember, 3/4ths of their Starting Pitchers are RHP… which the Phillies hit very well..

Mike, I don’t think anyone here really cares that the Phillies are the underdogs and picked by many to lose. Everyone here knows that the Rays are a very good team. The AL team has been favored in every World Series that I can remember.
My main beef is the BS “storylines” that the media is making up to attract the interest of casual sports fans. CBS has a story right now about Brett Myers “beating” his wife. Something that happened 2 years ago, he was never formally charged with and his wife is still wife him. Why else would you bring up something like that if you weren’t trying to create a storyline?
The reason everyone picked the Phillies to beat the Rockies last year is because everyone thought they were the better team. They were wrong. How would you have liked it if you waited 15 years to get back to the WS only to be told that you, as fans, are disgusting, vile people who don’t deserve to even watch baseball, let alone be in the World Series. F ‘em.

i like the matchup of hamels/kazmir and myers/shields MUCH better than vice versa. i think kazmir will give the phils serious trouble which is why i’m glad to see cole facing him.

Everyone saying Myers too emotional and will let the Tampa crowd get to him. I really, REALLY think Phillies fans are going to turn out in huge numbers down there. I think it’ll be half and half. And can be much louder than Tampa

i’ve thought and thought and thought about this over and over…
now i’m letting my brain relax tonight with a couple of yuengs, play some tiger woods ’09 for wii, and not tax my poor little dejected brain cells anymore until tomorrow night. i’m sure tomorrow’s game will be enough for my stomach to eat itself, but as long as we come out on top i might be able to continue selling insurance on thursday hah! if not… well my boss is also a raging phils phan so i’m sure he’ll understand…

I was wondering if anyone has tried this Sports Handicapping Service? I saw his video on Youtube and it turns out the service is sold through clickbank which means it comes with a 60 day money back guarantee. Was inquiring what peoples thoughts were.
