Ruiz Supplies Confidence, Wins

Good catching always seems like an afterthought. Normally, when a pitcher throws a great game, praise automatically is shoveled to the pitcher. Maybe the coaches get some. Heck, the opposing team gets some praise for stinking, too. But the catcher?
Well, Carlos Ruiz gets my praise. If you noticed, he caught last night while Brett Myers’ preferred catcher, Chris Coste, sat on the bench. And while you can’t exactly say “well Carlos should be praised for the way Brett pitched,” he’s been the guy behind the platem during this series, as Phillies pitching has given up just three runs on seven hits. And the Phils have won 15 of his last 17 starts behind the plate. And in only three of those 17 outings did the pitchers he caught surrender more than four runs.
“He’s been catching good,” said Charlie Manuel to Todd Zolecki. Damn straight.
We know Phillies pitchers, such as Brad Lidge, have said they feel comfortable with Ruiz at backstop. He can handle the dirty stuff — aka Lidge’s slider — making him an attractive target for any pitch. He can also keep a pitcher’s composure — after Myers loaded the bases and let in a run in last night’s first inning, Ruiz came out with pitching coach Rich Dubee to speak with Myers. A pitch later: ground out double play.
Sure, we can’t say with confidence that Ruiz is the main reason for the great pitching. No, it does start with great pitching. But lately, when Ruiz is behind the plate, there has been no reason to worry at all about what’s happening on that end of the battery. That Ruiz can sometimes get a hit — such as the one to start the big second inning last night — is just gravy on a very solid September.

Ruiz is the most underrated and unappreciated Phillie. People look at his batting average and boo him. He’s a great receiver and he’s been picking it up lately with the bat. Kudos to Charlie for recognizing that and giving him both starts so far.

I still support Marson. I mean if he can do all that Ruiz can but hit 275 instead of 220, well then I still support him. He just isn’t there yet, and I’m glad Ruiz has stepped up.

the bo-sox have given up 6 runs and 20 hits so far in two games…
the phils have given up 3 runs and 7 hits…

Gabriel Says You must be the stupidest sports fan in america. The red sox are on the road playing the best team in baseball. The phillies are at home playing one of the worst and you put up those dumb numbers. Can anyone here defend that stupid remarks he made. but the only thing that makes Gabriel not look as stupid is that he is still in diapers. and playing on his parents computer. we got our 4 runs with one swing of shane vic’s bat – off of a guy you may have heard of… i think his name is… CC sabathia… yea, he’s a little better than ervin santana. in fact he is widely regarded as the BEST PITCHER IN ALL OF BASEBALL and we took him out – in 3 and 2/3 innings… making him throw 98 pitches – 20% of which our own pitcher made him throw, that’s pretty good dont you agree?

Boston has Thirteen titles in basketball, four superbowls and two recent baseball titles and lord stanley lives here for our hockey titles. top that loser

i hate people who think they “know sports” because they know how many titles boston teams have won. get a life, you’re a fan of probably the least dynamic sports city in America. it’s boring, oh look another title. you don’t know what it’s like to be a real sports fan. you don’t feel anguish. you have no idea what it’s like to have your team let you down every year (i say this because you started following the red sox after they won their first world series)
