Game 2 : 2008 World Series
Phillies lead 1-0
Philadelphia Phillies at Tampa Bay Rays
Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg
8:29 p.m. / 72, fair
Brett Myers (10-13 4.55 ERA) vs. James Shields (14-8, 3.56 ERA)
Brett Myers takes the mound in game two of the World Series agiainst the Rays. James Shields goes for Tampa Bay, who trails the Phils 1-0 in the series.
News & Notes
Myers is 2-0 with a 5.25 ERA in the postseason, with a bunch of runs coming off the bat of Manny Ramirez. … Shields is 1-2 with a 3.72 ERA in the postseason. … Phillies hitters haven’t seen much of Shields, besides Matt Stairs, who has just three hits off him in 20 at bats. One was a home run. … Brett Myers hasn’t seen the Rays, either, but has faced Cliff Floyd a bunch. The lefty is 12-for-33 against Myers with three home runs. … The Rays hit .267 against right-handed pitching, while just .246 against lefties. … The Rays hit just .230 against “power” pitchers, of which Myers could be described as. Against “finesse” pitchers, the Rays rake at .280. … Greg Dobbs is your designated hitter, while Pedro Feliz plays third base, mainly because of the turf.
The Lineup
Jimmy Rollins / SS
Jayson Werth / RF
Chase Utley / 2B
Ryan Howard / 1B
Pat Burrell / LF
Shane Victorino / CF
Greg Dobbs / DH
Pedro Feliz / 3B
Carlos Ruiz / C
Your Gamenight Beer
Here’s Anchor Steam’s Anchor Porter. A very good beer, it’ll fill you up right while you watch the offense go to work in game two. Myers needs a good start, something like 6 IP, 2 ER, 5 K? Just something good. Nothing would taste sweeter than a 2-0 lead coming home, and the Redneck Express can bring it tonight. Let’s do it!
Go Phillies!

It’s too bad the offense shat all over themselves, because Myers has done his job. He got the 6 innings, 2 runs Tim asked for in his gamenight post.

Finally another 1-2-3 inning.
Myers only has 71 pitches through 6 innings.

Can some one PLEASE explain to me why Joe F**k and Timc McHARDfor are all over the Rays c*cks? When the Phils scored last night it was all ho-hum. The Rays score and they act like its the next coming up G-d. UGH! Why does Joe Buck annoy me so much?? Someone needs to punch him in the throat!

So no one’s questioning not having the infield in in the first? Two runs is two runs, and we could’ve done something about them. Myers has pitched a good game so far, he’s really done his best to keep us in this game.

I actually think Myers pitched well tonight. The two runs in the first came after that error and those RBI groundouts would’ve been a doubleplay and an inning ender, so he would not have given up a run. The third run came after the strikeout/walk to Baldelli and the 4th run came after a broken bat bloop, a 20 hopper to the outfield, a groundout and a squeeze play. Myers didn’t pitch too badly tonight.

Considering the botched strikeout and Werth’s error, Myers has kept the team in the game, within range to come back.
The offense just needs to do its job for once.

NEPA Maybe Dobbs has better numbers BUT Stairs is a DH and knows this park. Dobbs should have started at 3rd

Do they want us to feel bad for that dude with the muscle fatigue disease? I mean, sorry FOX, I don’t feel bad for anyone playing a sport. That is their choice. UGH, get over yourselves FOX and Rays!

Myers hasn’t been dominating but he’s has pitched well enough. The Phillies are just stinking it up

Solid? 6 hits, 3 walks, in his first four or five? Mmm…not my definition of “very solid,” but whatever…

The only guy that can take any satisfaction from their individual performance in this game is Carlos Ruiz

Myers will give up hits. Weren’t most of them singles, some of which seeing eye gimmie singles?

a lot of those hits were infield hits and bloops. The only hard hit off of him was Upton’s single in the first.

Hopefully the offense can come to life when we get this game back to the bank…Like AC in NJ said lets make it loud and miserable when the Rays come to town, thats how we got CC Sabathia.

Stairs is the biggest HR threat off the bench. I’d rather keep that bullet for later in the game when you can plug him in at a time when there’s some runners on base, like last inning.
Chooch has looked great tonight at the plate.

Chooch is the only one who’s come to the plate with saying if your going to get me out you better bring it and actually executed.

Nice sentiment Brian but the team out there tonight doesn’t want to win, you don’t mail it in like they have tonight unless you expect to loose.
The Rays are playing the very definition of smallball, get a couple of runs and stand aside and let the other team f*ck it up.

Griffin, this is about the same time Red Sox fans said goodnight on that 7-0 game. And we’re only losing 4-0.

I hope we don’t burn Madson in the vain hope we can win this one, too many failed chances to expect a rally to amount to anything worth using up any core piece of the pen.

Yeah but the Red Sox weren’t in a streak of over 20 at bats with a runner in scoring postion without a run scored…

Did you notice the fox trax on the last pitch of the Werth strike out – low and outside. Sorry, this asshole behind home plate is a terrible ump. I hope MLB rings his sorry ass up and never lets him on another WS crew again.

Anybody else find it funny that in the highlights for the Fox Copyright, the clip they show of Chipper Jones is for one of the skills he has the least of at his age and condition: running.

If Howard’s bat touches one of those 97 mph Price heaters, he’s going to “Moonshot Matty Stairs” it.
