rfddc5_5m8grvpfcw8775yve3q_original.jpgIt looked like the Phillies and Rays would renew their hate-soaked rivalry in the World Series, but the Red Sox decided to tap into that ol’ Red Sox magic.

Seriously, the Sox were down 7-0 in the seventh, when David Ortiz homered. Then JD Drew homered. And then soon the game was tied, 7-7. Drew’s ninth-inning double won it for the Sox.

Now the ALCS shifts back to Tampa for game six Saturday. Hopefully the Rays win, because no way would I want the Phillies to face a team that just came back from a 3-1 deficit by winning its final three games on a miraculous comeback, and then in their opposition’s home field. No freakin’ way.

Regardless, both teams will be tough for the Phils. I mean real tough. Not Brewer tough, not Dodger tough, not even Met tough, but real, real tough. They’re very good. Luckily for us, the Phillies are very good, too.

Apparently the satisfaction of 2004 wasn’t enough. If that were my team, I would’ve been happy for, oh, at least 10 years. Probably 20. I haven’t seen a championship in my lifetime. I’ve waited close to 25 years now. So, yeah, I would have been happy.

They won last year. Ok, that is awesome. Winning another one. Good for them. But that wasn’t enough. They want more and more, like Sylar.

And so they evolved into a stuck up front running fanbase that doesn’t pay attention until the postseason because they expect it will just be handed to them and not earned. They have become the Yankees.

okay rsf, if you aren’t going to let me pick your brain, please at least answer my first question…
    1) have you ever lived in or around boston (and dallas i guess…)?

Don M if you think I missed the game and it makes you happen then good for you. I know you are a loyal phillies fan and I am sorry for you. to know that the series will be lost by them . so if it makes you happy to post lie’s go ahead.

RSF here illustrates my point exactly.

The fact is nobody knows how it is going to turn out. But I think the Red Sox fans should be more concerned with actually winning their games and giving up less then 7 to 13 runs for once against Tampa in Game 6.

Thats the same problem with the CUBS… in like 2003 when Bartman happened, people would have loved to see them succeed..

but now that ESPN has been BJ-ing half their team all season, people got sick of them.. they had them winning the World Series by the time August rolled around.. same thing with Sports Illustrated.

If the Phillies don’t win it, I usually don’t care who does… last year I was torn, and was actually pulling for the Rockies because they beat us, and I was sick of the RedSox… and before the Sawks won 2004.. there were just as many people from Boston living all over the country as their are now.. it just doesn’t seem that way to the rest of us, because only recently have their fans become super-fans!!

    GO SAWKS!!!!

I do wonder if the Rays advance (which the odds are still in their favor despite what RSF may tell you), how the loss in Game 5 might have shaken their bullpen. If they get it planted into their heads that they can’t hold comfortable leads.

Very well said, SJ. Especially the part about payroll that could help the financial crisis. We, as fans, are all guilty of feeding that huge monster with our tickets, our concessions, our gear, etc……Where does all that stop? And RedSoxNation really seemed to be at the head of that after 04. It’s ridiculous. I mean I love the fact that the Phillies want to spend what they can to be competitive. But there has to be a limit to it all. What is Howard going to command after this year and are the Phillies willing to pay? How about Burrell? The list goes on and on and where are the prioities? Seems like the Red Sox had none, learned the hard way with Manny(OK…he’s a great talent and helped them win….) and now are trying to clean up the mess.

It does make me happy to know that some dork who says he’s like 40+ with kids thinks its fun to go to an opposing team’s blog and talk smack.. and turn what didn’t especially matter into a pro-Rays fanbase now..

And if you were funny, or had good comebacks, this would really be something.. but your comeback is that we’re jealous of you…. not really.. after 2004, yea.. now, I’d be embarassed to be associated with the RedSox Nation (are you a CARD CARRYING MEMBER???)

You’ve shown little-to-no class, and even less knowledge of baseball since you started posting on here… basically showing a good example of how to act like a douche on the internet.. seriously, it’s like you are running on clinic

I could see if we were playing the RedSox.. and you wanted to talk some smack, and then talk some baseball, that would be cool, and all in good fun… but instead, you suck at life, you suck at being a sox fan, you suck at posting on Phillies Nation, you just plain suck…

Gabriel – You might as well give up because RSF is not going to answer that simple question. The reason? Well, I think we all fully know the reason.

SJ Mike you are right I guess I am being a little over confident. I just feel it’s like watching Manny bat even with two strikes, you can see how confident he is that they can’t get him out. well its the same with me.I Feel that the rays can’t win.

    “A little overconfident.”

    Understatement of the year.

RSF – ANSWER GABRIEL’S QUESTION WHY DON’T YA???!!!! AND DON’T LIE!

You’ve never lived in NE in your life! You’re a bandwagon jumper and you friggin know it!

I would feel that the Rays couldn’t win too if they just came to my team’s ballpark, and beat our top 2 pitchers..

and Manny… boy is he GREAT.. having him on the roster really helped the team in the NLCS, they didn’t act immature throughout the entire series or anything.

Has anyone ever thrown more hissy-fits than Russel Martin did in that series?? Matt Kemp… he USED to hustle, maybe Manny’s “winning attitude” rubbed off on him a little??

I hope that Manny goes wherever the Money is the greatest, and I hope that team sucks.. he is a great hitter, but one of the worst things about the sport of baseball.. his lack of hustle cost his team Game #1 in Philly.. and his blast in Game #5 sure was worthy of a curtain call.. because it cut the lead to only 4!!!

I am sorry Gabriel never lived in boston or dallas. only starter to root for dallas recently. been to boston a couple of times but not recently. Think it is a nice city clean. But I love the city of brotherly love. just not there sports teams. Wherever I Travel I always show my pride as a south philly resident.

So when and how did this love affair with the RedSox come about??

Such a bandwagon fan! I can see if you were from the area, but its ridiculous to go to a visit to a city, and suddenly one day decide to root for their sports team. That’s not really how it works.

I guess when they got rid of terry. I thought he got blamed for the teams lack of talent. And started to follow the red sox because of him. And the more I saw of the team and how it was run. the more I liked it .they really got me back into loving baseball all over again. The whole organization just tries so hard to win and does whatever it takes to reward the loyalty that there fans have. And if people feel that’s wrong, then there is nothing that I can say that will change there mind .

MP: That’s actually how I started being a Red Sox fan. I visited back in ’99 and fell in love with Fenway and the whole thing. So I started following and rooting for them when they were playing, but as my secondary team. When I lived in Boston starting in ’02 it just became natural to continue rooting.

Hey Don, I just saw what you wrote about David Boreanez. He is a Philadelphian at heart (lived here for years) and his father is the great Dave Roberts from Action News.

In fact, Boreanez sang the Action News theme song with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show one time. Hilarious.

Yea, i knew all that… but he looked a little out of place and unsure of himself doing that lineup the other night didn’t he??

Let Will Smith do it or something.. Kevin Eubanks.. you know…

Tim just looking at potential free agents. what do you think of bradley I know he is a flake but can produce and second I still want a top of the line starter. do you think madson performance will help us go for a holiday or that type and use a madson as a big piece of the trade he has to have real trade value now that he is hitting 97 on gun some teams like toronto or padres might think of him as a closer. and also fuentes is looking at almost 12 million a year doesn’t that sound high for him.

even fox cant afford will smith anymore, and eubanks, well isn’t he nbc? hah i really liked the it’s always sunny star rob mac… but why not ike reese or howard eskin (completely being sarcastic…)
oh well, we’re in the phall classic, that’s all that matters…
i’m an indiana transplant, been here since ’98… no indy baseball so i was a whitesox fan (still love the big hurt) but it only took a year or so to switch my fave team to the phils… my dad lives in dallas so as a kid i was on the ‘americas team’ bandwagon – but i was also only in 4th grade… 98 was the year reid/mcnabb came to town so it was easy to stop likin the colts and switch to the birds…

SJ Mike I wish I knew how to find things that fast on the computer. I really need to take a class to see how to do a lot of the stuff like you guys who hear a question and find a link so fast to answer I am jealous.

Gabriel just a little curious how old when you moved and was it a culture shock to go from indiana to philly.

MikeMike, my girlfriend says the same thing. She is amazed how quick I turn this stuff around.

It’s the same with my work. I’ll be out shooting something and have an edited product that night.

I just have a habit of quick turn arounds.

I do wish they sang “Stay a little closer to my world my friend.”

i’m 25 now… so i was going into my soph year in high school, the only real shock was (keep in mind i live in south jersey suburbs) the lack of patience… everything in indiana is laid back whereas everything here is kinda, agenda-driven and impatient. i’m more than used to it now (even assimilated), i work in philly now but have made numerous trips over the bridge for phils games and since i turned 21 (oh come on i was only 19) to go to bars

That nut’s cause my wife works at comcast I would see the skateboards all the time sometime right in front of comcast old building on 15 th street the people would scatter it was funny.

SJ Mike: I completely agree with you! You’ve said: the Red Sox became the Yankees. And their new, bandwagon fans (or should I say FRONTRUNNERS) just make me dislike their team more and more.

mikemike: Bradley is intriguing. He’s a year or so younger than Burrell, and will command a little less with a 2-3-year deal. I’d guess he’d want close to 8-9 mil. I don’t like that he’s a head case, but he can hit .300 and 25-30 homers at the Bank. Not a bad sub for Burrell. He’d be high on my list.

And as for pitching, I’d expect if the Phils go for a starter (which I can’t necessarily see) that it’s a low-risk, mid-level guy. Remember, Hamels, Myers, Blanton are all back, with Happ and Carrasco practically ready, and Kendrick still stirring around. Moyer is possible, too.

Madson’s performance so far is shaping up for him to be THE eighth-inning guy next season. I can see the Phils getting one more back-end-type piece, but for low money.

Honestly, outside of the outfield, I see no real big moves for the Phils, unless they want to shake up things with a trade. The raises and potential long-term deals (Howard, Hamels) are more important.

And that’s all I have to say about the offseason until the last game of the WS.

I still can’t see them going long-term with Howard… as great as the numbers are, they now know both How Good.. and How Bad he can be.. and because of the potential let-down factor. there is no reason for them to buy out his arbitration years in my opinion.

Hamels is another story, I think he might have 3 years left before he could become a Free Agent??

Offer him $25 right now and secure his future… you know he’s going to get $7-8+ Million in arb this year anyway… might as well lock him up now while he’s young, show your faith in him, and then in two years try to re-work a long-term deal to keep him forever a Phillie when the time comes

I really think Kendrick will be back next year improved and ready to get back to his old self.

As for who does the starting line ups next week, the def have to let the Phantic do it again!

when did the Phanatic do the lineups???

I think Kendrick is pretty much done.. his “stuff” never really impressed me, he got by on good run-support, and solid defense behind him.. I’d like to see Carrasco and Savery, etc.. before they give Kendrick another shot

He was great for us last year, but the hitters have adjusted to him more than he adjusted to the hitters, and I don’t see him ever getting that advantage to go back his way

Phantic did the lineup for game 2 and did “impressions” of the players it was cute.

No I think Kendrick will surprise us all. If he can get his other pitches worked out I think he’ll be okay

I believe the phillies are going to let howard walk. They have him until I Think he is almost 32. The thing is this guy is a rbi and homerun hitter, the best in baseball but it’s the money and years that scare me. His body type usually don’t play at a high level in there late thirties and any contract he signs is for 20 million or more for eight to ten years. That what was reported and what his family especially his father is saying. teams like the yankees and boston will eat some years. so he knows the money will be there for him. I am more critical of this origization than most but in this case the phillies are right if its correct in what he wants. Hamels I truly believe will walk because the money he will command in free agency the phillies won’t pay. especially for a pitcher. buying out his arbitration years won’t drop down his price. Remember he was mad at last years offer and was automately renew. He wanted a chiropraric doctor and they said no. So as happy as it look now after the series its back to business. as far as financial future and these guys know what they can get. Unless john middleton can change the other owners mind. They are still bottom line owners who in my opinon will not go over there budject for a player even if he is homegrown.

Amazing that usenet, blogs, etc have been around for so many years and people still feed the trolls. Leave it alone, don’t rattle its cage and it will go away.

The Phils can get a good 3 to 4 years out of this talented nucleus without signing Howard or Hamels to long term deals if they decide not to. The Phils will offer a long term deal similar to what they signed Rollins and Utley, offer long term security in exchange for giving up big bucks down the road. I don’t care personally so long as if Howard leaves, we don’t replace him with Rico Brogna or Travis Lee type players.

As for next year, Burrell is gone. Taguchi and Coste probably won’t be back. Otherwise the NL champions will stay intact. I’d expect a righthanded outfielder to split time with Dobbs in left, a middle relier or 2 and maybe a catcher on a one year contract.

I am not a Phillies fan and dont think the Phillies are usually inclined to spend a lot of money , but an item for thought, if the Phillies were to add Sabathia to this team as a free agent, that would be a scary team to go up against. Plus you know the Mets are going to spend you need someone to go along with Hamels to combat Santana and Pelfrey in 2009. Also (he is a big headache and uncontrollable) but Manny would hit like crazy in that small stadium; but I would rather see teams win with decent players like they have now, then the Manny types.

Ralph I really believe the mets will get funtes, another reliever plus burrell or bradley for left trade beltran to cubs and not resign degado and put lee there. And go after C.C. or sheets.they have a ton of money to spend with a lot of expiring contracts. The only drawback is there G.M.

I think the Mets would be insane to trade Beltran, he numbers are far superior to any other CF in the game, plus he is up there in the top 5 most clutch players in the game. The Mets have a lot of holes (C,CLO,Bullpen,LF,2B,SP). The Phillies should focus on pitching, they will not have a hard time hitting next year. The braves are still rebuilding as well as the Nationals. the Marlins will be good though, lets not forget about them. the AL East will be a dog fight between Yankees, Red Sox and Rays. As for the Cubs , I have no idea what they need, they appeared to have pitching, hitting and bullpen during the regular season – maybe its their destiny not to win in the post season :) The Yankees need starting pitching really bad , and there is not a lot of it out there this year.

Phillies taking on Boston in the World Series is appealing yet I would be quite apprehensive about playing Boston. Phillies just have not had much luck against them since Inter-league play started, especially at Fenway Park and they have really pounded the Phillies in some games over the years. I do not remember the Phillies winning one series at all against them but I do recall a Boston sweep or two of three games. Of course Manny is gone from them now but they do have Drew and Pedroia who have really killed the Phils recently, not to mention Ortiz. I just feel that the Phils would have a better chance against Tampa Bay.
