World Series Preview Part VII : Prediction

So here we are once more, another series prediction. This time the stakes are a bit higher: I’m predicting whether the Phillies end up on top of the baseball world.
And I think they do. I really, really do.
Everybody (okay, almost everybody) is picking the Rays to win the World Series. And I can’t blame them — the Rays are chic, they’re fun, they’re cool. Joe Maddon is probably the coolest guy in baseball right now. The babyfaces of the Rays are all practically my age. They dethroned the Evil Emp … err … Red Sox Nation. And they wear baby blue! Of course they’re the pick!
Look — the Rays offense has a flair for the dramatic despite no real gaudy numbers. And their pitching staff is pound-for-pound a bit better than the Phils staff. Their bullpen? About on par with the Phils. They have the homefield advantage and a ton of momentum after taking out the Sox in game seven of the ALCS.
But the Phillies have silenced everyone by simply playing their brand of baseball. Their starters will get the job done not by dominance, but by necessity, taking down as many batters as they can while allowing as few runs as they can. They leave with leads, they hand the ball to the bullpen. And that’s the difference with the Phillies: The playoffs are defined by the late performances, and the collection of Scott Eyre, Chad Durbin, JC Romero, Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge have emerged victorious throughout.
The offense hasn’t been flashy, but they’ve been clutch. Against these Rays starters, the Phils may put up some ugly averages, but you can count on a couple big hits, or a couple plays where they take advantage of Tampa Bay’s youth. Sure, the Rays will capitalize off the Phils smaller talent on the hill, but not as much as they’ll want.
The Phils will get to see a few righties who rely on their fastballs to work the count. Those are the pitchers the Phils enjoy. Matt Garza may prove a big challenge from that side, but he’ll have to silence the crowd at Citizens Bank Park. That may be too difficult for a kid who almost forgot who plays for the Phillies. Game four has to be another Phils advantage — while Andy Sonnastine can be tough to hit, he can be very easy to hit, and rock-solid Joe Blanton has this playoff thing down to a tee.
Back to the first two games. Game one will be a test of patience for both teams. Which big pitcher will crack first, if at all? I’m confident in Cole Hamels to throw his game and hold the lead. Game two scares me a bit, as Brett Myers doesn’t strike me as the arm that can defeat Tampa Bay. But Jamie Moyer is the arm. While he struggled against patient Milwaukee and Los Angeles teams, the mix of Tampa’s inexperience and the home crowd’s fury will lift Moyer. Game four, as I said, should go to the Phils.
To me, it’s a question of five or six games, and I’ll say six, because the Rays are really good. (I would love nothing more than for the Phils to win in five, at home, with Brad Lidge throwing the knockout punch.) Now, you’re thinking, Myers will end this series? Yeah. For some ridiculous reason, I see Myers delivering the one big start that wins something for the Phils, and the World Series is all that remains.
Now, there wouldn’t be much sweeter than for Moyer to deliver the win in game seven, but I’m sticking to six. And I’m sticking by a Phils win. Yes, the Rays can definitely win this series. Absolutely. But I can’t bet against the Phillies. Not now. Not as they’re standing by their businesslike approach. Not as they’re focused on one game and one game only. Not as they’ve completely disproved all of us throughout the season. A lot of us couldn’t see this series. A lot of us didn’t think this team had it in them. Well, they knew what they were doing. And they know exactly what they’re doing here. They’re taking the world championship.
Winner: Phillies, 4-2

Phils in 5 seems like a beautiful way to go, with Hamels tossing a gem in front of the home crowd to wrap it up. But I have to agree, I’ve got a feeling that it’s Brett Myers reeling in the title after 25 painful years. He gets this city. All of last year we saw the passion that he has on the mound, the way he feeds off of our passion. And since he came back up from the minors he’s showed it again, especially against the Dodgers. I think if you hand him the ball with a title on the line, it’s ours. Phils in 6. I can’t wait for the beer-soaked celebrations.

It sure would be sweet if we could win in five. Cole Hamels could go seven or eight. Then Bring in Lights Out Lidge in the ninth. He definitely deserves to close the last game and be on the mound when they win it.
I predict the Phils will Win it in either five or six games.

Very well said. I don’t know why the whole world (including the “experts” are picking the rays) but i don’t mind though. I can’t wait to rub it in everyones faces when the Phils take it. It’s going to be glorious. I’m going to walk around in my championship and phils hat with such pride.
Phils in 7. Two games go into extra innings.

You know the Rays are right now?? the SEXY pick to win the World Series…
the Vikings, Jags, Seahawks, Saints, Browns, etc… were all supposed to be good in Football
and 3 weeks ago, the Angels and Cubs were picked to be in the World Series.. basically a LOCK by every “expert”…
The story will be of the Rays amazing season, no matter what the outcome of this World Series.. and really, the only opinions I care about are those of my fellow Philadelphia fans.. and the people that have watched this team game in and game out… the Rays might be good.. but the Phillies will win the World Series !!!!

I think we win in 6 too. I also think Moyer will come up with a strong outing in game 3. I think it’s so fitting that the first WS game at the Bank, first WS game to played in this town after 15 years that Jamie will be on the mound. I think he will put to rest any questions or doubts we had about him in the last two starts.

my prediction is almost exactly the same. cole hamels will be cole hamels tonight and the phils should take game one. i’m a little iffy on myers winning game two, so a split in tampa seems most likely. Any combination of Moyer, Blanton and Hamels will win us at least two out of three at the bank, and in game six we’ll see a fired up Myers dominate for the series win. phillies in six, GO PHILS

I’m predicting for Phils in 7. We’re gonna win the odd games. GO PHILS! I’d much rather see Phils in 5 with Hamels pitching a no-hitter in game 5.

I agree. Phils in 6. I think they split the first two in Tampa. Win two of three in Philly, and then Myers come up big in game 6. He will go at least 2-3 with an RBI. ;)

Phil…you honestly think that Myers won’t win either game 2 or 6? I really expect him to win at least one game if he pitches two.

man, I wish Manuel separated Utley and Howard in the lineup. Now the 3 lefties in Tampa’s pen will get to face two lefties instead of Utley, Werth (a lefty killer) and then Howard. Damn your stubborness, Manuel.
Oh well, let’s go Phils.

oh man i’m gettin a ‘halfie’ just thinkin about the phils in 5… (good slogan – ‘phils in phive’)… if they pull that off my boss or any of you guys/gals will have to bail me out as i will streak across the the field from foul pole to foul pole… hahah we can only hope…
first things first, colbert michael hamels (look it up, it’s his real fist name)
http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=430935
he has to set the table and lay out a gem, which he is more than capable of…
another thing, damn you tim malcominthemiddle for being such a great writer to actually put some fear of the rays in me… i bet the rays and their fans are building hurrican-proof houses with all of the bricks they are shittin down there… phils in phive! keep it alive!

Is it crazy that I say us in 4? Call me crazy then. While that is my prediction, I just simply know we’re going to win it, how many doesn’t matter. I can’t wait until we prove all of these predictions wrong; we’re pretty damn good at proving everyone wrong.

Sounds like Brett Myers is the Phils’ version of Matt Garza?
Sort of….emotionally Myers is like Garza, but without the talent.
Flaky + talent = mercurial, e.g. Garza
Flaky + no talent = unreliable, e.g. Myers
that was a tidbit from the rays blog “draysbay”… i did a little homework…
myers post all-star break=
7-4 boasting a 3.06 ERA
garza post all-star break=
4-4 and a 3.39 ERA…
sounds like some misled rays fans who, like espn experts, only see what they want to see…

I really, really think Charlie should pitch Hamels three times, in games 1, 4, and 7. 4 days rest in 4 and 7, if 7′s even necessary. The kid’s young, determined, locked in – and flags fly forever. And look, if we get to 7, who do you want on the mount, Jamie Moyer on 5 days rest or Cole Hamels on 4? I love Jamie as much as anyone, but Cole is the call.
I wish there were some way to pitch Myers at home, but I just don’t see it.
Hamels, Myers, Moyer, Hamels, Blanton, Myers, Hamels!

I will not make any predictions until after I see which Meyers shows up. My best is on the Phillies in the end, but I just cannot guess how many games. IF they win Game 2, I’d bet they win in 5. If they lose game 2; I am thinking they will win in 7. I do not know why I think that; I just do.
On another note: I am so glad they won game 1, but honestly, I was a bit disgusted in their performance because everyone said it would be a low scoring game. I was hoping they’d blow it out and shut everyone (analysts) up fast… Leaving 9 on base is not quite the best playing and it gives the analysts more ammo to pull for the Rays. My hope is game two is a slugfest for them and they win.

I’m getting a little sick of all the runs being left in scoring position. 1 for 28 with RISP is just a little pathetic. They better start hitting those in, they can’t leave it up to the pitching and D every single game. Come on Phils! Put out a bit more fight offensively! These low scores they’re putting out are killin me!
