We’re thinking of putting together a t-shirt listing the top games of the Phillies 2008 season.  Here is a preliminary list.  What are some other great games from this championship season?

  • May 16 – Werth slams 3 homers and drives in 8
  • May 26 – 20 runs scored against Colorado
  • June 13 – 20 runs scored against St. Louis
  • August 26 – Phils come back from 7 runs down against New York in 13 innings, take over first place.
  • September 14 – Phils complete 4 game sweep of Brewers, take over Wild Card lead.
  • September 27 – Moyer and Phils clinch second straight NL EAST division title
  • October 5 – Phils win NLDS over Milwaukee
  • October 15 – Phils win National League Pennant over the Los Angeles.
  • October 29 – WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS
  • October 31 – Parade down Broad Street

I’m doing this off the top of my head, but wasn’t it game 4 of the NLDS that had the Shano and Matt Stairs homeruns? I think that was the big game of that series.

For the Milwaukee series I would have to say game 2, with Shano’s grand slam, and Myers best impression of being a real hitter.

July 4th- Shane Victorino walk off hit against the Mets.
I forget the date, but it was the game where the Phils were down 6-3 and they scored 5 in the top of the 9th to come back and beat the Mets 8-6.

i was there in NY when the phils came back in the top of the ninth. i think it was July 22, So Taguchi of all people had the biggest hit. 5 runs in the top of the eigth. i even got Utley and Vic’s autographs. the highliht of my summer being able to walk outta that shit hole Shea with my head held high after 8 miserable innings. that has to make the list

I’m not sure of the dates but, Burrell’s walk off against the Giants and the walk-off against the Astros where Jenkin’s slid in to home

Yea Matthew… the game against the Astros.. we were losing 3-0 in the 9th and came back and won that thing 4-3.. there was a BIG home run by Burrell that night.

What about that Astros game early in the season when they went into the bottom of the 9th down 3-0 Snelling hit a first ball fastball out for a homrun to lead off the ining then Utley got hit by a pitch (i believe) to put a man on for Pat “The Bat” to take Jose Valverde (sp?) the opposite way for a game tying HR. Then Jenkins struckout but the ball got away so he was at 1st when Pedro came up and ripped one into the LF corner and Jenkins was barely safe at home. Phils win 4-3 after not doing a damn thing offensively for 8 innings.

The Burrell walkoff HR game vs the Giants

Oh and the Braves game when Lidge almost blew the save but Vic gunned the guy out at home to end the game, ( I believe that was the Kelly Johnson game when he dropped the pop up but I could be wrong)

Yeah I was there too it was like we won the world series against the astros haha! Its great that I was at 4 of these game in person and got to experience the best of the best. I was also there during some of the lows however, but these games made me proud to be a Phillies fan. and Manny there was also a home run by Chris Snelling that game haha. Chris who? Geoff blew by the stop sign that game too!

Not sure of the date or the final score, but it as a game sometime in June I believe against the Braves where Victorino threw out the potential game tying run at the plate for the last out of the game. That is one that stands out in my mind.

hahaha yea Robbi.. I remember that.. I was trying to remember the name of the guy… When they put him in, everybody in the stadium was asking CHRIS WHO?.. and then he hits a home run! hahaha Amazing.

I also got to go to the game against the Giants (the one where Pat the Bat got a walk-off homer after Rowand hat hit one in extra innings). I went down from the upper deck seats to right behind the Phillies duguout…just in time to watch the full extra inning… and I remember chanting MVP MVP to Pat Burrell.. haha.. good times.

But the Astros game was more spectacular because we were being shut down by their pitcher…and Chris Snelling (haha), Pat Burrell, and Jenkins all step up to give us a win in the bottom of the 9th… out of the blue! I remember saying after the game: this is the type of game that makes anyone a fan…

In retrospect……Did Victorino have a helluva year or what. Geeeez.

yeah, the Braves game in Atlanta with the Kelly Johnson dropped pop up that would’ve ended the game and then Vic throwing out the tying run at the plate to end the game.

The Burrell walk-off against Brian Wilson and the Giants.

The Astros walk-off against Jose Valverde and the Astros.

The So Taguchi vs. the Mets game was huge

and like Ben said, the biggest playoff game was Game 4 against the Dodgers with the Vic and Stairs homers.

when shane victorino threw a seed from centerfield to get out the braves player ( ican’t remember) at home plate from center field.

the phils went onto win that game.

    that was a critical game.

July 4th was a fantastic game against the Mets.

Excluding the postseason games, August 26th was hands down the best game this season.

Burrell’s Walk Off against the Giants and the four run ninth inning against the Astros, which included Snelling and Burrell homeruns and Feliz’s game winning rbi single.

You gotta include the Matt Stairs game. I’ve probably watched the youtube clip of his homerun over a hundred times.

What about the game where the Phils came back late and won on the Bat of Ruiz and Moyer. Moyer i believe got a triple via an error and ran over the ump rounding first

I think Brett Myers’ 3-for-3 game and maybe his historic AB against Sabathia needs to be mentioned, as well.

    Some comebacks that I remember:
    At Colorado (both)
    SF (burrell HR)
at D-backs (snelling got the rally started with a HR) this maybe the game Bruntlett hit like an All-star
That Braves game where Vic threw out the runner out the plate to end it.
Mets: Bruntletts game saving play on ESPN sunday night.
the 5 run comeback the 7 run comeback
Myers 8 inning SO 1-0 at Shea
Vic’s late 3 run HR at STL on ESPN Sunday night

The walk off against the Astros was early in the year, I was there and I remember being misreable cold that night and thinking, I can’t believe I’m staying around for this. After the second out in the bottom of tthe ninth I was getting my things together to leave and then Burrell popped the game tyin homer. I believe Jenkins hit a double next, and then if I’m not mistaken,it was Feliz that hit the game winner. It was awesome. So glad I didn’t leave after the second out.

July 26th against the Braves, Cole melted down and gave up 4 runs (plus another 5 on errors) in the 4th. Atlanta was ahead 9-3. Phils went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of that inning. But in the 5th, the Phils came back and scored 7 runs, the last 3 on a pinch hit HR by Dobbs on a 2-2 count with 2 outs. Lidge locked it down and the Phils won 10-9. I was in section 142. It was great.

Argive… great call.. i remember the melt down and completely forgot they won that game.

how about the mets game from last year for the hell of it. Game 4 of the series when we sweep them here. Burrell took Wagner deep and Werth stole 2nd 3rd off him. And I believe it was Utley who knocked in Iguchi for the winning run.

One best phillies games of all time and I had tickets and didn’t go because it was BP special.

If some one has a dvd of that game I’d like a copy

Oh I just remembered, I think the starter that shut us down for 8 innings in that Astros game I mentioned was Shawn Chacon (it was before he kicked Ed Wade’s ass)

The Myers AB against Sabathia happened in the same game that Shane hit his NLDS grand slam.

I was there for that 9th inning comeback at Shea. That must be on the list.

Partial bias because I was there, but the August 24th game against the Dodgers was amazing. Fairly slow game the whole way until Pedro knocks in a game tying RBI in the 9th to force extra innings. Then Feliz comes through again in one of his biggest games, one in which I don’t he started, by knockin’ a 3 run walk-off in the 11th to make it 3 strait against the Dodgers. HUGE momentum booster.

The game against the braves when shane throws out the runner at the plate to win the game and keep lidge perfect record in save in tact.

What a magical year it was… I was there for Opening Day (to see them hang the 2007 pennant), the NLE clincher (to watch my hometown hero, Jamie Moyer, clinch victory on my little brother’s birthday), Game 1 vs. the Brewers (Lidge put us through hell down the stretch) and both days of Game 5 WS. Bought tix for the NLE clincher in April (when that game was potentially meaningless), bought tix for game 1 vs. the Brewers the day of the game from the Phils ticket office (called up and they somehow had tix available…) and won a lottery for WS tix, game 5. Too many coincidences… we all have stories but in the end, it was just meant to be.

If you’re putting together a shirt… gotta separate game 5 onto two dates
October 27… game 5 part one (unPhinished Business)
    October 29… WS Champs!

I forget the date, but Tim, your headline read: “Dobb’s HR saves Hamels, Phils, fans, season”

But that comeback win over the Mets was probably the best game. If I’m remembering correctly, that was the game that So Taguchi got the tying rbi after a tooth-and-nail at bat? Am I remembering that right?

Pat Burrell’s walkoff hr with utley on base with 3-2 count. Early July I think

The Atlanta game where Victorino threw the last out at home plate preserving Lidges perfect save record. Early July.

My own best games (which I’ll admit is a little lazy)

10/23 (against the Rays, WS Game 3)
10/13 (against the Dodgers, NLCS Game 4)
10/2 (against the Brewers, NLDS Game 2)
    9/27 (against the Nationals)
    9/16 (against the Braves)
    8/26 (against the Mets)
    8/24 (against the Dodgers)
    8/3 (against the Cards)
    7/26 (against the Braves)

if you’re gonna count the taguchi game against the mets (which was amazing, especially being in NYC), you gotta count the coste walkoff against them too.

My favorite non-playoff game was the last of the regular season

The phillies clinched and we rolled out all the call-ups and bench players, in a game that didn’t matter and was just an exhibiton. Happ relieved Kendrick and pitched a few scoreless innings, and Marson hit his first major league homer in his first game.

Stairs hit a pinch-hit homer, foreshadowing the biggest hit of his career.

6/16 Cole Hamels goes 7 innings against BoSox while Howard smashed two monsters out, Rollins knocked one out as well. 8-2 victory. it wasn’t the best series, but our ace dominated arguably the best team in baseball at the time. the stadium was sold out, and the cheering rivaled a post season game when howard hit his second homer deep into LF. with the help of a brew or two or three, my body was warm all over when fans started jeering the bloody sox fans.

I agree with a lot of the games that have been said so far. Game 4 of the NLDS, Game 2 of the NLWS, and Game 3 of the World Series are all tremendously important maybe more so that the respective clinching gams.

While, its not really a game and I don’t remember the exact date but I think that the day in which Brett Myers agreed to go own to the minors to get things straightened out deserves to be put in. Without Brett swallowing his ego we would not have him pitching as he did down the stretch. Nice symbolism of the team first attitude this group developed as they went down the stretch.

To echo a few others….I have to say that the game in Atlanta, where Victorino threw the tying run out at the plate to end the game was probably the best (regular season) ending to a game I’ve ever seen. I DVR’d the end of that and it’s still great to watch. Especially watching
Escobar clap his hands when he got the hit as if he just knew that he had tied it.

One of my other favorite games of the year was actually one that we lost. It was the double rain delay game against the Mets, when Werth hit the homer off Wagner to tie the game. That was really when I started to think this team was special, and I think that (despite the eventual loss) it sent a message to the Mets that we weren’t EVER going away. And it was such a huge confidence builder for Werth that would carry on for most of the season.

The two games against the Mets that are easily among the best EVER (not just 2008). The Game mentioned when we can from down 7 runs to win and reclaim 1st place

Hasn’t had a comment since before game 5 1/2. I’ve been speechless and high on the read and white since then. You covered a lot of the later season so I’ll add some earlier memorable games for my family and me:

April 15 – The Phils are down 0-3 in the 9th and Chris Snelling comes in and pinch hits a HR! Chase Utley was hit by pitch (one for the team) & Pat Burrell HR! Geoff Jenkins, somehow, is standing on first base after he struck out and a pass ball on the catcher. Pedro Feliz doubles and a panting Geoff Jenkins races from first and gangly crosses home plate with called of safe. One of the best comebacks and it was early in the season with a 4-3 win over the Astros.

May 2 – Both Chase Utley & Pedro Feliz had two run HRs in this game. The 8th and Flash Gordon gets out of a jam – no outs – man on third and a ground ball to Gordon while Giants had hit and run on no less. Lidge gets out of jam with man on second with one out and then man on 3d with two outs. Giants took lead in 10th with HR by ex-Phillies star Arron Rowand. In 10th Giant pitcher (can’t remember name) throwing about 97 MPH – strikes out Jason Werth, Chase Utley singles, Ryan Howard strikes out and Pat the Bat hits a HR for the 6-5 win.

May 15 – I know it was a 5-0 over Braves but…Hamels had 2 singles and (wow) got his first career shutout. Lots of home runs – Pedro Feliz in the 3rd, and then Ryan Howard and Shane Victorino.

May 20 – What could be exciting about a 1-0 win against the Nationals? Let me tell you…Hamels had 11 strikeouts, no runs, 4 hits, but gets no decision. Pedro Feliz doubled in 9th; in comes pitch runner Eric Bruntlett who moves up to third and scores after a single by Greg Dobbs.

May 22 – Ryan Howard 3-hits and one a monster HR. (Howard did the same thing the previous night but two of his 3-hits were HRs – just wasn’t a close game). In the 8th inning Pat Burrell comes off the bench and hits a home run to win it over the Astros 7-5.

June 06 – This was a game in the season when your opponents say this team is the one. The Braves had Hudson who was their best starter and the Phils Jamie Moyer. The Phils pulled this one out of their hat like all the great teams. Phils were still down 2-1 in the top of the ninth. Out number three was in the air. A slow motion pop-up that meant the game was over and almost made you turn the channel to watch Hiedi. But Chris Coste’s popped-up to shallow right field was dropped by Johnson, and Eric Bruntlett (in for Burrell who doubled) scored giving the Phillies a very late 2-2 tie. In the 10th at Atlanta, Chris Snelling double, a sacrifice bunt by Jimmy Rollins, and then a triple from Shane Victorino (his 2nd) to score pinch runner, Taguchi for a Phils 3-2 lead. Utley hit a double, scoring Victorino for a 4-2 lead. Brad Lidge came in for relief and this one came close to shattering his perfect record before it meant something later in the season. Lidge allowed a hit with men on 2nd and 3rd and as they rounded the bases he was saved by a game stopper from Victorino’s who threw out the 2nd runner, Blanco, out home with a nice tag by Coste.

July 11 – Shane Victorino doubled, tripled, scored two runs and saved a run by playing a home run into a double. His triple in the 8th knocked in two runs that tied the game. Victorino offense and defense and Werth’s hit in a 12 inning game gave the Phillies a 6-5 win against the Diamondbacks.

    Game you already mentioned:

August 26 – is a top favorite for me and I’m sure the Phillies who were down 7-0 to the Mets and came back to win. I told my daughter that we’ll need to be prepared for a long one because Jamie Moyer was pitching. Little did we know what would transpire? She and I looked at Moyer’s pitching performance and groaned in the earlier innings. The guy who seats next to us, a regular, was so disgusted he left in the third inning! My daughter and I had resolve because my family never leaves a game until the final out even if it includes a blatant bad umpiring call. Our neighbor’s empty seat echoed his words loudly in the early going, “I can’t take this anymore and I’m not going to sit here and watch”, but faded as time past in the game. A great Phillies surge clawing their way back up the pole included good defense and sweet timely double plays. Howard’s HR made it close, and clutch hitting especially Bruntlett in the ninth. Probably the best game of the year from a comeback prospective, and length of game which allowed a baseball fan to savor the sweetness of watching baseball being play in the ninth inning over and over and over again. The final act was played with Victorino on third and Coste’s long ball to cap Coste night of 1.000. It’s a shared moment to be in attendance and watch a flood of your boys spilling out of the dugout and jumping up and down at home plate. What a stellar performance by the best bullpen in the league for 2008. The game was an omen for the Mets to be skunk in ’08. Yes, the Mets won the next night and broke our streak but it somehow stood as frustrating empire moment in the season for them. It fulfilled a “We gotta believe” for us, and I think for the Phils too who now sat in 1st place.

    Looking forward to the shirt.
