Boras Giving Madson The Mariano Treatment

In a David Murphy story for the Daily News, Scott Boras compared Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge to Mariano Rivera and John Wetteland:

“Ryan was extraordinary [this season]. He comes into the postseason and does things — he exhibited traits and quality of being a setup guy. Obviously his velocity is of the highest order, his ability to handle pressure situations down the pennant drive and the postseason, when you add all that to the resumé, I think he’ll be highly coveted. He’s a very young guy and obviously was a very important dynamic to Philadelphia’s success.”

Translate: Let’s get Ryan a lot of money.

Madson is seeing arbitration this season, but it’s no secret Boras would want a lucrative deal for the Phillies setup man. Madson earned $1.4M last season. To compare, setup man JC Romero was awarded $12M over three years last year.

I’d consider offering Madson a similar deal to Romero, but wouldn’t care if he goes to arbitration again. He’s not necessarily Mariano Rivera.

Scott Boras is such an asshole. Madson is good but he’s no Mo. Noone is Mo. F*ck Boras.

He may not be Mariano Rivera, but Madson is looking GOOD in that picture!

Rivera just finished up a 3-year / $45 million contract, he was getting paid $10 million a year before that. If JC is getting 4 million per year, there’s a lot of room between there to make a deal.

HAHA, Madson = Mariano Rivera? Boras realizes that Mo is the best closer in the history of baseball right? Madson proved himself a viable set up man over the last couple months but come on, lets be serious. I guess that’s his job though, try and hype his client, so we can’t really blame him.

NEPA: That’s why a Romero-like deal is right for Madson. He proved himself over the final three months at a role he NEVER played before. Usually he’s either been the 7th-inning guy, the starter or the swing man. One more year of solid 8th-inning work, then we can offer him three years and $21M or so.

    two words…Rocco Baldelli….

I’d definitely try to lock him up for 3-4 more years, but to put him in the same company as Rivera is just crazy talk!

Anyone think he should be tested as a starter again?

Has anyone influential inside the game publicly come out to call Scott Boras a cancer to the game yet? Fighting for his clients is one thing but Boras seems more like a machiavellian saboture than a good agent, he’s not fighting for Madson’s career so much as he is his commission by driving up the asking price to a number of a different level of player. Would Madson refer to himself as 1996 Rivera? Doesn’t stop Boras from doing it though…

I disagree, while he’s not Mariano, he’s better than Romero.

I would give him something like Shields from ANA got. He rec’d 3yrs/$14.6

    I would throw him 3 yrs/$15 with a 4th yr at $6.5.

2 good months and he’s Mariano? Durbin actually had better overall #s than Madson this past year and no one’s gonna call him that. Just lots of talk.. I actually think Romero is more valuable than Madson – IMHO.

BTW – where’d that picture come from? Is there a calendar I’m not aware of? Who else is in it? Now that’s what’s important..

    3.05 era in back-to-back seasons???

No, he’s established himself now as a top setup man.

113 – I agree he does get kudos for keeping his era in the same good place two years in a row…after some not so great early seasons….but I think time will tell if he can continue to keep his shoulder healthy and pitch in pressure situations w/o giving up too many longballs.

Madson has always been one of my faves…regardless of his #’s and he sure came thru in those playoff games. I hope he gets paid well..and I’m sure w/Boras he will.

we gave romero that deal and he didn’t do so hot, give him arbitration and if he does good give him a contract in the middle of the year

Chutley that makes sense. I Believe these people are crazy to suggest to give him 3 yrs. and 21 million that’s nuts, He gave us a half year. Before that he was choke city every time we used him in the eight or ninth inning.

we need to see what he does in 09 before offering a big contract.

A lot of these player will go to arbritration with high expectation. But do you think Madson gets more than 3 million from 1.4 . He is a set up man and won’t get big dollars based on one half year.

Scott Boras is a f*cking moron,he does his job but he’s just ruining baseball…Ryan Madson shouldn’t even be in the same catagory as Mariano Rivera.

I agree Madson through arb shouldn’t get more than $3. BUT if you give him more than $3 it helps your chances of signning him to a 3-4 yr contract.

    That’s all.

Yeah….Madson’s a great reliever and has a lot of potential moving forward, but he’s no Mariano Rivera. I’ll be real interested to see what he does this coming season. He has a standout year then the picture changes a bit. I just think he needs to prove himself a little more. One season (not even, really) is no basis for a fat contract. Yeah…..Boras is a self-inflated a-hole, but he certainly does produce for his clients.

Boras is a duche. Sign Madson to a one-year deal (to avoid arbitration) and if he stays HEALTHY next season, then think about a longer-term deal. I’m not a big believer in multi-year deals for relievers b/c relief pitching is so volatile from year to year.

I have been a big fan of Madson’s since he throw his first pitch for the Phils, but I don’t think he has shown enough to warrant the comparisons to Rivera. I do believe with the ever changing landscape that is relief pitching we might have a great deal of trouble trying to resign him if he has the same type of year next year that he had at the end of this one. I could see a team way over paying him i hopes of turning him into a closer.
