i dont think any of this discussion has anything to do with anything. moving utley to 1st? having a guy with no big league at bats ur starting 2B to start the season? Why dont we just pull a marlins and trade the entire 25 man roster for a the entire league’s draft picks and hope for the best. … we might get a pizza for eaton

Gillick said Utley was hurt in June so this isn’t a surprise. Hopefully Utley won’t miss much time, but if he does I am fine with giving Donald 2B until he is healthy. Re-signing or re-placing Burrell is even more important now.

NJ: Do you think the A’s would take Golson? Beane loves walks and On Base percentage which is not Golson’s strong point.

What the f**k was that trade! If we weren’t that high on Golson why the hell didn’t we send him to Oakland in the Blanton deal? Unless his stats are so deceiving we might as well not look at them he looks like a budget version of Marlon Byrd. How many times do we throw away tradable pieces for players with ‘potential’?

This guy may have 30 home run potential but he doesn’t look like he’s looks like his developments on borrowed time. Why the hell not give Golson a shot in AAA at the least rather than send him packing for a guy older and with less ‘tools’…

Did Nolan Ryan send this with a smile and someone to slap a sign on Amaro’s back saying kick me?

Cleveland isn’t the market we are. and sometimes you have to pay extra just to prove you do care to the players and your fans. Howard is no ordinary talent. How many players have done what he has done at this stage of there career. It was one of the reason it was hard to get a fair value on him there wasn’t to my knowledge who in three years had done what he done . homerun title mvp shortest to reach 100 hr. and he is homegrown. by the way we got our left gielder mayberry in a trade he make minimun wage perfect to them to try to sell to us . a twenty five year old triple a 260 hitter. maybe they thought they were getting his father.

OK. Seriously, what is with all the Howard hate? I understand he has his downfalls but he has been an MVP candidate for three years in a row. His bat is probably the biggest reason pitchers fear our lineup. He has set record for his homeruns. Most by any one in as few at bats and seasons. That is not something you trade away when you have control over it. Even a good young pitcher is less rare than a guy like Howard. I guarentee, you trade howard, you will NEVER make it to the world series or have a shot at winning it again until you get a similar power bat, which, will most likely not be anything like his. He has a bum season, expect him to grow and do better in 2009. You are a fool if you think he’s not an incredibly HUGE part of this team, and I’m not just talking about the scales.

Donald is a smart choice to start…it’s april, and if he and the team suffer, there is time to make it up.

If he does well, then that’s a shot in the arm for the phils right out of the gate.

What do you expect him to say? Yea, we lied to you all when we said Utley’s hip wasn’t an issue.. His hip looked bad, and we played him anyway.. it was a serious issue, but we didn’t want him to sit out at all???

Honestly, he still played well down the stretch, he played great in that Dodgers series.. his hip looked alright in his first World Series at-bat, when he went deep…

I agree that Arbuckle should have been kept, but there are reasons why teams have looked more closely at Amaro as a GM, and Arbuckle more-so for talent-evaluation, and player development.

Well, Reuben Amaro is already saying dumb stuff. Is he serious that he didn’t think the hip injury affected Chase’s second half? Was he watching the same player I was? Utley’s power numbers dropped off… DRAMTICALLY! his average slumped too, but his power numbers dropped significantly. When you watch Utley swing, you can tell that the torque that he gets in his swing comes from… HIS HIP! It wasn’t his mechanics as our new genius GM thinks. Plus, even if it was his mechanics, they were probably off because… why? HIS HIP WAS BOTHERING HIM!!!! This essentially sums up why Arbuckle should have been promoted and AMARO should have left town!

mikemike don’t you remember what happened to the Indians back in the mid to late 90′s? They had massive poplularity but were loosing money hand over fist because their payroll escalated so high it didn’t matter if they sold out or not.

That team looks awefuly familiar to the Phillies now.

Donalds felt to be a major league ready short-stop by pretty much every team with a need at that position.

I’ll be on the pay Howard bandwagon once he starts looking like a true MVP again and not just a September player but he’s regressing at an alarming rate, teams are attacking his flaws in a way they do no other ‘elite’ bat in the game. The guys going to get a crazy deal on the open market and if he’s still hitting like he’s in a batting cage then and not adjusting to the game let someone else pay it. I don’t like the idea of us tying ourselves to a sinking ship because we couldn’t adapt and move with the times.

I agree, but I doubt that Utley will turn into a singles hitter just because he had to play 2B instead of 1B. I agree with you in that Utley will eventually have to move to an easier position, but I think we’re years away from that time.

Is starting the season with Donald at 2B and Bruntlett as a backup adequate? Is Donald MLB ready?

Please don’t say the phillies don’t have the money to give Howard . I agree he right now is talking big money. But they can afford to sign him and Hamels. It is just there way not to do it, they made a ton this year. and will be making more each day with video and shirts and merchandise, remember local merchandise isn’t share with the league. So two first round draft choices for howard is good. He is twenty eight project him for a least seven years at 45 hr a year .that means we let a 500 hr. hitter walk ,why because we won’t pay him. Fourth largest market in baseball. largest market without two teams. over fifty sellouts this year. yet we can’t lock up two players who came through our farm system who are studs. Move chase utley from a allstar second base to first makes sense . weaken second for a unkown glove at first. some real brilliant talk . you never move a star at one positon to another unless you have a start to replace him. donald isn’utley.
