Odds And Ends: Looper, IronPigs, Winter Leagues

Some Saturday Odds and Ends:

According to the article, Pat Gillick recommended Looper for the general manager job after Gillick decided to step down in 2003. The Mariners instead hired Bill Bavasi, who led the Mariners to a combined 359-451 record and four last-place finishes in five seasons.

  • The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs will host the 2010 Triple-A All-Star Game.

Hopefully some of the guys in the lower levels will be playing in that game. There is hope.

A quick winter leagues update …

  • The Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League continue play, and hitting is faring much better than pitching.

Jason Donald is carrying a .400 average and is fifth in the league in OPS (1.151). Quintin Berry is hitting .359 with a .408 OBP and 5 SB. Jeremy Slayden is hitting .284.  Meanwhile, all four Phillie prospects (Pat Overholt, Andrew Carpenter, Tyson Brummett, Sergio Escalona) carry ERAs over 5.00. Of course, it is a hitter’s league.

  • Over in Hawaii, Dominic Brown is second in the league in hitting (.373) to catching prospect Buster Posey. Meanwhile, Michael Taylor is struggling with a .224 average.
  • Brian Mazone is in Mexico, and is 2-0 with a 2.73 ERA.
  • And Carlos Carrasco has a 2.84 ERA with 19 K and 4 BB in five starts in Venezuela. Carlos Monasterios is carrying a +6.00 ERA, and RJ Swindle has a 1.50 ERA.

And from the blog:

  • Finally, if you were awake early today, you saw a video on the site. Not right now — it’s kind of large.

    Cool updates.
I can’t believe Cole Hamels only made 500,000 last year. Although compared to what I made that is still ridiculous.
I like your t-shirt designs! I’m going to get the “phinally” one, building a new wardrobe. Here’s some others I got:

When is Hamels up for contract negotiations? What is he scheduled to make next year? I hope RJ Swindle pans out, too.

Apparently the Cardinals are the favorite to get Matt Holliday and the Cubs and Braves are closing in on Peavy with the Dodgers as a longshot. I’m not too excited about having Peavy in our division.

I just want to say, this is a great blog. The phillies should re-direct their homepage to philliesnation.com

Tim-”if you were awake early today, you saw a video on the site.” What did I miss?

Georgie – There was a 5 minute video up recapping the weeks events and previewing the week ahead but it wouldn’t play. I guess the file was too large. So you didn’t miss anything.

Only 500,000 crazy isn’t it to play a game we all love and get paid tremodous amounts of money.

How can the Cubs paid another salary?

Is there any reason on earth that the Phillies would not target Derrick Lowe as their big off season aqcuisition? He’s a groundball pitcher looking for just a three year deal. I wouldnt mind a Hamels/Lowe/Blanton top three. Myers would go in a trade if we could get anything for him. Comments?

Myers earned another shot to stick around for a year. And he’s owed $12 million, which no one is going to pay. So if we trade him, we get not-so-good value in return, and we have to pay a huge chunk of his salary anyway. I think we have to try to make him work here for one more year.

Lowe is a Boras client and says he wants $18 million a year. Not sure if he’ll get that, but Lowe would look great in a Phils uni.

Lowe: 18? I thought he was getting 10 this year. 10 to 18 is a HUGE jump in my opinion. Maybe 15 MAX. I really want this guy to play for us.

18? Not gonna happen. Would love to trade Myers and get rid of the salary and get a prospect or two. Need the money for Lowe. Holliday? Keep him. I’ll take a LF who hits .285, walks, doesn’t strike out much and put him right in the seven hole. For about 3 mill.

I agree, I think Lowe would be a great fit here. Assuming we re-sign Moyer, though, that squeezes the Kendrick/Happ/Carrasco trio out of a spot in the rotation. Maybe that makes dealing one or two of them more palatable?

I wouldn’t pay Moyer more than about 8 mill on a one year. He earned it. Actually, a Dobbs/RH platoon in left would not be horrible. Its not the O. MUST……HAVE…..PITCHING. Anybody gotten any word on Drabek and/or Savery?

Moyer at 8 million is a lot for a player his age,

Here is the bad thing about signing Moyer for 8 million this season…For 2 more million we can sign Lowe, and bring in either Happ, or Carrasco for the #5 spot. The good thing about signing Moyer is…..He’s a mentor to the pitching staff, and its like having an extra pitching coach in the dugout. I wouldn’t be dissapointed if we signed him or not. I think Amaro will make the right decision here either way.

Lowe doesn’t sign for 10 mill.

……AND what evidence do you have that Amaro knows anything about running a baseball team?

What evidence did the Sox have when they made Epstein their man or Beane in Oakland, the Phils ownership want to continue what’s been started and Amaro fits the bill having handled much of Gillicks more procedural work for the last couple of years.

Lowe would be nice but it isn’t going to happen, one Boras client is enough. If your going to massively overpay for someone this off-season then Lowe’s not the guy.
