Odds And Ends: Williams, Marlins, Opening Night

Two quick bits alongside the Eyre news:

  • Jimy Williams has opted not to return to the Phillies as bench coach.

Not a big loss, really. Charlie Manuel should find someone to replace him pretty easily.

  • The Marlins traded Josh Willingham and Scott Olsen to Washington for Emilio Bonafacio and PJ Dean.

The Fish already traded Mike Jacobs to Kansas City, but this moves makes me wonder why this franchise is even operating. What a horrible way to do business.

  • The Phillies will open the 2009 season on Sunday Night Baseball.

Initially the Phils and Braves were playing Monday, April 6, during the daytime, but they were moved up to Sunday night, April 5. It’s good to be king.

Actually, since we are world champs, don’t we play in Japan on about 2 days before opening day? I think that’s what the champs get to to the past 2 years, atleast I know it was with the redsox.

No Japan series this year. Remember, the World Baseball Classic takes place this season.

Yes…for the WBC I got selected for first round tickets in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Japan and Toronto. If anyone wants to buy them, I’ll order them.

The Marlins’ moves really make me wonder also. As much as I can’t stand Olsen and his mouth and attitude towards philly, he was a relatively solid starter, and Willingham is a decent player as well. Who are the players the Marlins recieved??? They start showing something and then they gut the team and start over? And they want their own stadium? Amazing.

I have round 1 tix options as well. If anyone in those cities need tix, hit it up.

When do Tix go on sale? I live in SC obviously, but want to jump on the wagon if I can as soon as they are up… I will buy a grand slam pack, opening day and last day – JUST in case they do it again. I can stay up online to get them, just need the info.

The Marlins got the 2nd basement the Nats had acquired from the D-Dacks in the Rauch deal who’s meant to be a starting calibre guy which’ll increase the chances of Uggla moving soon. I’d hoped the Phils we’re going to sneak Willingham in in a quiet deal but obviously wasn’t to be.

Great shame about Williams but there’s good news with Drabek.

Getting my Phllies fix this morning. What happened to Steve Smith? I only saw it in print this morning. Does anyone know the scoop? I have passed this site on to another fellow diehard (not a bandwagon guy, although it’s great to see so many “Phllies fans” since their success. He told me he’s been checking the site since August when I told him about philliesnation.com.

Smith going is no big deal.

Olsen is not that good, and would have been pushed out of that rotation sooner than later. The Marlins will finish ahead of the Nats again. This is not a big trade at all.

I’m glad to see Eyre back, its too bad Jimy Williams is leaving but its not a big deal.

The Marlins trade don’t look good for them, right now at least. They could have held onto both Olsen and Willingham a little longer or gotten more value. I am guessing that they will trade Hermedia or Gregg next, since Jacobs has already been traded. I could also seen them trading Cantu with the addition of Bonafacio in a crowded infield. I think they will keep Uggla for now and trade him in a year or two.
