I have to say though that this article by Tim really got me thinking about the fact that …ok ,Lidge had a lights out year…but what was it exactly that made somebody step up every night to get a key hit to win a game….or a reliever that got a key out?Especially in the last 25 games or so.
Think about it..Chase ,JRoll,Howard,Werth,or somebody always came through.
Was it fate?were we due?Is Charlie that good of a motivator?
Maybe all of the above.
But whatever it was I hope like hell we have it again this year because it was a hell of a ride .

Brian..great response..Wade just didnt know how to get these guys thinking like a winner..He put together some of the people but not the right attitude.I thank Charlie for that.
And Tim,Great article,Lidge was one of the reasons for the division and series wins…probably the biggest reason,along with Hamels.

What would have been the possible downside to that deal from the beginning. Bourn can run, that’s about it….wow Wade was really impressed by that speed.

Thank God he’s no longer our GM, he’d be looking to dump Howard and bring back Travis Lee.

The core of the team is his, but he had no idea how to build a winner, here’s hoping Ruben paid more attention during the last three years than he did during the Wade era.

I actually think that Wade though Michael Bourn was going to be another Juan Pierre. Instead, he’s struggling to find his “identity” in the ‘stro’s outfield mix. Get it? Stick around I got a million of em. And Ed Wade. This from the man who brought us Ugeth Urbina for Placido Polanco to come in from the bullpen to put out fires. Instead, he stayed in Venezuela and STARTED fires on some poor mans face after he stabbed him in it eight to ten times. I give Ed Wade no credit for building this team. I wish I could have him sit at my weekly Hold ‘em game.

I agree and i think the Phillies should make more deals with Houston/ Ed Wade. HaHa, use what used to be a detriment to our advantage.

I wonder if Wade would accept some type of trade for Eaton?

and i agree Gagne was totally on the juice! Look at his stats – he was unhittable for three years… he sucked before those three good years and he sucks after.

The main difference between Lidge’s year and Gagne’s is that Lidge wasn’t on the juice. You wondered if Wade just wanted to unload Lidge and begin his mark in Houston with a bold move or he really didn’t shop around. You would think he could have gotten two serviceable players out of this. I guess indirectly he was able to flip Costanzo for Tejada but we fleeced him. The only player worth it is Geary in that deal. Bourn is nothing more than a 4th outfielder and PR, not a full time MLB CF.

you say Lidge’s doesn’t equal Gagne’s, which i agree with. But if you count the post-season, i think it definitly rivals Gagnes’. 44 + 7 postseason saves and i think it comes mighty close, with the Phillies reaching the ultimate goal.

Considering the Tampa Gay ass-sucking that Joe Buck and Tim Mcarver did they didn’t give much credit to Brad Lidge for how much he’s ment to the Phillies this season.

Maybe Wade thought that getting rid of Lidge may be one of those “change of scenery” deals, or a Bobby Abreu-style trade. I don’t know if they would have wanted to resign him after this season, so maybe they just wanted to get something for him. They ended up trading Costanzo away right after, didn’t they?

Lidge has been incredible, Wade really got fleeced but he asked for it. I give a lot of credit for JC Romero for giving the bullpen arms the right attitude so Lidge could focus on his own game, and what a game that is. Credit mus go to Flash for taking a beating at the start of the year on the chin, if we’d rushed Lidge back we’d be talking a whole different story.

All the ideas can be thrown around about why Lidge found that edge that makes him such a special pitcher, but when it comes down to it that guys tough and as much as ability or circumstances can be used as reason Lidge mentally stayed tough and consistent from day 1 to the last pitch.
