One thing people are forgetting. Cole Hamels history of injuries works against him. If at his age it was me I would take a 7 year deal to get financial security. He still would be young to get another deal yet he gets financial security for his family a win win for him.

If I were Cole, I’d want the longterm. There are numerous of players who get signed to multi-year deals who are WAY overpaid. *ahem* … Adam Eaton? Who, this past season, was making a half Mil more than Utley! Hahaha.

Who doesn’t want financial security, anyway?

For an organization, if the player has a rather unsuccessful season, then yes, their pay will go down. But, deservedly so.

I love arbitration because it breaks down your performance throughout the season and ends with a dollar amount, which most times, you’re really worth. Example: Ryan Howard. I think the 10 million is spot on with him.

I’m not so sure… Hamels is a pitcher who is very prone to injury…so he might prefer signing long-term.

But don’t they take a chance with that, say if they happen to have a crappy season, would their value go down? To me, going to arb every year would be stressful, rather have the security. Or maybe guys that want to go to arb every year are not sure they want to stay with their current team longterm???

I would think the best benefit would be to sign him now. The best for Hamels would be to go year to year. Matt is right he will get a boat load of cash when he becomes a free agent. This might be the only shot the Phils have at signing him at a bargain.

I could see Hamels going year to year with us. If he signs with us now he forgoes millions. If he goes year to year he will max out his potential salary by the time he hits FA and then can go to the highest bidder.

The upside for players is that they get financial security. The team gets a bargain basement price if they sign him long term. Rollins is underpaid by his contract. Utley took a long term deal but if he didn’t and hit the open market, his annual salary would have been alot higher then he is getting now.

Just to finish off on ur topic Georgie, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that Cole Hamels may prefer it to go year to year. Tim Lincecum has come out publicly as saying he would prefer to go year to year in arbitration to get top dollar for his year to year performance to match other top pitchers until his arbitration time is up. Then sign a long term deal. Hamels may be thinking the same way to match his performance against other top pitchers hitting the market. I don’t think he’ll get 7 mill but definitely 5 mill.

There will always be two sides to that argument when a star player is up for arbitration. One side says, “yeah, of course. Keep it as cheap as you can for as long as you can”, and the other side states “Lock him up long term and avoid ‘hurting his feelings’.”

This is a buisness. I’m fairly confident that most players don’t take arbitration to heart.

Honestly, who wouldn’t want to keep top tier players on arbitration? It flat out makes sense from a financial point of view.

Would have been nice to sway Juan Samuel to the team to be the potential 3rd base coach. To have Lopes and Samuel would have been a wealth of stolen base knowledge. Don’t know what Mackanin brings to the table, but hopefully he knows how to manage the double switch, and waiting until a batter is announced before allowing Charlie to take a pitcher out.

This is sort of off topic, but it is regarding something David Murphy said the other day on DNL, I completely disagree with him, and sent an e-mail about it. He thinks the Phillies should take Hamels to arbitration for the next several years and not sign him long-term yet. He said he should get 7M next season, and go year to year like that. I think that’s not the way to go with Cole, won’t that cause bad feelings all around?
Why would you screw around with your ace, we sure can’t afford to lose him.
