I don’t believe what I am reading about Steve Smith’s firing. Are the Phillies nuts? How can the speculation be that Charlie was not a big fan of his third base coach. It was Smith who was first to hug Manuel in the dugout when the Phils won the world championship. It was Smith that kept this team fired up with his willingness to get ejected on their behalf. Is Amaro jealous of how much the players like Smith? Rollins would be the first to say that it was Smith that motivated him to excel, not Charlie. I hope Smith comes back to haunt the Phillies with a new team. The Phils may have just put another 25 year curse on their team with this dumb move. I’m finding a trash can for anything Phillies in my house.

I guess this really shows what kind of a person Manuel is. Smith was the one who stuck up for the players when Manuel wouldn’t. This is major league baseball, not a sorority. Manuel has held a girly grudge for this long and after a championship? What a joke. Smith had one of the toughest jobs in a very tuff stadium (fans & playing field). I would bet anything the players didn’t appreciate this move. In the end, Smith is a World Champion and will be a better coach for wherever he goes next.

Firing Steve Smith after winning the World Series is a very poor move. I hope the Phillies go down in flames next year for testing the baseball gods in such a way. I hope Steve lands on another club and soon, he is a good baseball man and fine person.

mikem – Russell Martin??? Are you kidding? Did you watch the NLCS? That guy was a bigger choke artist than Greg Norman, Dan O’Brien, Scott Norwood, Jean Van de Velde. I was grinning ear to ear when he came up with runners on – two outs with one swing or watching him overswing and K. Ruiz is no Johnny Bench, but he is as good or better defensively and I’ll give him a chance to learn to hit.

I’ll miss seeing Moyer and Howard waved home from 2nd on a rocket single to RF or Burrell trying to tag up on a pop up to the SS in shallow Left center. It’s the most disappointing move so far.

The Phillies could sign Sabathia, Teixeira, Ibanez, Burnett, Lowe and every other top free agent available, and this would easily be the best move of the offseason.

The only move better would be for the Phils to back the money truck up to Cole’s house and lock him up.
