Phils Assemble Scouting Staff

The Phillies realigned their scouting department yesterday. Philadelphia native Howie Freiling — a Northeast High baseball star (“Central mambo …”) — was named a special assignment scout. He joins Hank King, Jim Fregosi Jr., Jerry Lafferty, Roy Tanner and Jon Mercurio in new roles. Del Unser and Dean Jongewaard remain in their pro scout roles.

Some of these names sound familiar, some don’t. For some reason I’m imagining a Phillies boys’ club. These guys all sound like they should be scouts.

Boy, it’s a slow news day.

The Red Sox traded Coco Crisp to the Royals for Ramon Ramirez, who recorded a 2.64 ERA last season. As you might remember, I mentioned Crisp as a possible candidate for the outfield next season.

Looks like it would’ve cost the Phillies one Ryan Madson for Crisp.

Mlbtraderumors mentioned in a tiny blurb that the phils are in on burnett? Any other word on that? That’s the first time I’ve heard that.

Tim, are you a Central HS grad? 259 class here, and I’ll be at “the game” next week

I played ball with Howie Frielings bro, Robbie, at Lincoln. Def a better a soccer player, City player of the year in 03, than a baseball one though. But, I love the kid.

Yeah, 261. I may get to the game, depends on if I can get home for Thanksgiving.

The Phils’ interest in Burnett goes back to July. I don’t think it’s a big interest now, considering his price tag may be four or five years, $70-$80 million.

I would pay burnett 5 years 80 million instead of moyer 2years 18 million. remember myers 12 million next year will be gone unless he proves he is worth it. And hopefully Carrasco will be ready to step in at 4th starter with happ the fifth and Drabek knocking on door.
