I always thought that about the Phils, in regards to free agents. They never bring in any big names, but now that I see where they are, I am completely fine with growing our own talent. But it would be great to see them pull in a huge name that can and will put the Phils above even more so.

2) He worked for the Royals, the worst franchise in baseball the last ten years.

Our home grown talent needs to be paid first… that’s how you build a champion (Ed Wade deserves some credit for that). We need to get out from under bad contracts (Adam Eaton, Tom Gordon, Pat Burrell… yes, he’s not worth $14 million) not sign new ones. Gillick was able to fill the gaps and we need Amaro to have that same foresight. The centerpieces are in place and if we can hold onto our guys, we’re on the cusp of something special… I believe that we’ll see a long run of postseason appearances. This team has taken over this city… that ballpark has won over the younger population and the ownership needs to capitalize on that. How about a Phillies network? How about a headline free-agent? How about taking the $20 million plus that you earned for winning a world series and doing something to solidify your position as the team that is most likely to win the next championship in this city? If you’re not moving forward, you’re getting passed by and this city cannot be happy winning just one.

I agree that the Phils shouldn’t just stand pat, but I’m afraid that is what we’re going to do.

I know that going after FA is not THE answer, and that our priority should be to keep this team intact for as long as possible… But my point is: if we are not resigning Burrell, we should be able to bring in either a Lowe (top pitcher) or a Bradley/Dye (good outfielders). We can’t just lose Pat and hope we’ll stay strong without adding any strong pieces to the team…

Our money this offseason will be spent on arbitration raises for Hamels, Howard, Madson, Blanton, Werth and the rest of our arbitration eligible players. We have to spend more money to keep this team intact.

Just think about a team like the Marlins who wishes they had as much money as the Phillies.

With Free Agency set to begin in about 8 hours this is the best we got? talk about an assistant general manager.

For Yankees fans this is like Christmas eve. who is the team gonna buy us this year?.CC, AJ, Manny… maybe all 3! the suspense must be eating them alive.

I guess there’s not much to talk about for us.. compared to the yanks we’re like the poor kids who live up the street. The best we can hope for is resigning Jamie Moyer and picking up a few guys other teams passed over.

I disagree re: Swisher. A poor replacement for Burrell if we ultimately need one – dude hit .219 last year and doesn’t come close to replacing Burrell’s OPS. No thanks – that’s a big PASS for me.

I don’t know why Amaro’s even considering anyone other than Krivsky off of that list. He made a major turnaround in the Reds’ farm system in only 2 years (and we could use something similar!)

Yankees get Swisher for a bag of balls. He’s owed 22 million over three years. I think he would’ve been an interesting option for leftfield.
