Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the Brewers have signed former Phillie left-hander RJ Swindle to a minor league contract.
The sidearmed Swindle posted a 7.71 ERA with the Phils last season, but was dominant in the minors, going 3-1 with a 1.53 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 53 innings between AA Reading and AAA Lehigh Valley.

The re-signing of Eyre meant the writing was on the wall for Swindle with the Phillies, so it’s good to see him go to an organization where he’ll have a chance to make an impact. With Shouse likely to depart via free agency — and their bullpen in shambles anyway — Swindle has a decent shot to contribute there.
Best of luck to RJ.

This will be his 4th team since being drafted 4 years ago and he has decent minor league stats. I guess they think slow tossers like him wont make it in the majors.

Swindle has a spot in the majors, but it’s definately as a LOOGY guy. When he was up with the Phils this year, he never really got into a grove and was forced to pitch in some situations that he’s not really suited for. Good to see him get a chance somewhere else, as he doesn’t fit on this team in 2009.

Swindle is going to not make in the ML because his slow curveball is going to be the hitters wait on and can pound it all over the place. He never got a real shot to be a impact on our team but maybe he can make it with the crew. Eyre in my opinion is a better LOOGY so i think we are better with out him then with him.

i’ll never forget the game i was at against the mets when he struck out carlos delgado on a 54 mph curve. I think everyones jaw dropped who was around me. and we were only 10 rows behind the phils dugout

Tom –
I’d disagree. Mike Myers has a nice long career doing the same thing.

I think Swindle as a STRICT Loogy has a shot, of sticking, but you cannot let him face righties like Wright, who just hit a moon shot off him.
I think it’s no big loss since we have 2 good lefties in the pen, and a few interesting ones in the minors as well.
