Setting The Burrell Parameters

The one question that may determine the Phillies offseason plans is, of course, the Pat Burrell question.
It was reported yesterday that the club “set parameters” for a Burrell proposal. More or less, that means “we’re starting here, we’re ending here.” The Phillies know what amount they would give Burrell, and they know what amount they won’t give Burrell.
My parameters would start at two years, $23 million, with a third-year option at $15 million. Or: $11.5M / $11.5M / $15M.
My max is three years, $33 million, with no option, more money on the front end and performance incentives in the back end. Or: $14M / $11M / $8M / incentives up to $9M, kicking in as $3M in 2010, $6M in 2011.
I’m not keen on giving Burrell $11.5 M, then turning around and giving Jamie Moyer another $6M or so. Still, the Phils will have room to get another couple players with the cash remaining. Going up to $14M or $15M with Burrell is probably too much.
What are your parameters?

Dobbs is a great player coming off the bench… he brings intensity and if we are forced to play everyday in LF we will miss his PH at bats immensely. He didn’t seem to have as much success as a starter when Feliz went down (I would love for someone to post his splits as a starter and team record… that’s only my observation). Where is Del Ennis when you need him?

I hope the Phillies’ front office will come to their senses and give Burrell his due money market value and three years on a new contract. Thus ending all the suggestions/opinions on options for a righthanded hitting left fielder. However, it would take a reversal of the front office’s attitude of greed for profits and and acknowledging the financial wealth they’ve attained the past years (including their most prosperous year with record breaking sellouts at CBP, merchandise sold and media contracts which was enhanced with a World Series Championship this past season).

Hey, thanks Bruce. “Due money market value”? Define please. He’s not “due” anything. He’s had the feed bag strapped on for years. We owe him Jack. Sign him just so we can end all the speculation? Good reason. Moving on, who of us would be happy with a platoon that ended up with a 25/85/.285/15 season when combined with some defense and the ability to move runners thrown in? I WOULD!

If Burrell brought his bat to the ballpark all season and not half, then he’d be a 20 million dollar player, but since Burrell shows up half the season, he should get half of that. I would say 2 years, 20 million, but no more than 2 years if they must resign him.
Honestly, I don’t want Burrell back, I feel we could improve the team by adding a contact bat into the mix.

Dave, just curious on why you would take Burrell over Ibanez? I will give you the fact that Ibanez is older, and didn’t hit quite as many homeruns in a bigger ballpark. Is it the fact that Ibanez had more RBIs on a worse team(110-85)? Is it the fact that Ibanez hit for a much higher average(.293-.250)? Is it the fact that Ibanez scored more runs(85-74)? Maybe it is because Ibanez stole 2 bags and Burrell stole 0? Maybe it is because he had 52 more hits than Burrell(186-134)? Maybe it is the fact that Burrell struck out 136 times compared to Ibanez’s 110?
Well, for whatever reason you like Burrell better I will never understand it.
Another reason as to why Ibanez would be better is because he would cost less than Burrell, and only require 2 years in a contract.

I never really thought about it until now, but Ibanez would be a nice fit here. I’d bat him 6, and bat Werth 5th to break up the lefties.

Ibanez is better than Burrell, but he’s a left handed bat. We need some power from the right side of the plate if Burrell isn’t back. Holliday and Dye are perfect, but both would need to be traded for and Holliday would be expensive on a long term deal. if we can’t obtain Dye, I’d see what it would take to get Holliday. I think he’d be worth the money since I think Howard is gone in a year or two. PAy up now and go all in while we’re riding high. Anythin under 140-145 million on the payroll would be an insult with how much cash the club made this year.

I know this is a little off the subject, but does anyone have any information on Comcast and MLB TV starting up Jan 1? Is it free with cable, or is it considered a sports package? If it’s a sports package, does anyone know how much it costs?

What about using Bruntlett in left with Dobbs and Stairs, he is a right handed bat, he may not have a great deal of power but I think with more AB’s he could hit for a pretty good average. He may have been brought in to spell Jimmy at short but Charlie seemed to think he was a better defensive replacement for Pat in left then Jenkins or Taguchi, and the man scored the World Series winning run.
With that said I would love for Pat to be back next year, but not at a price much higher then 10/11M over 2 or 3 years. If we can’t bring him back and 2/3/4 headed monster that they employ in left fails, they may be able to move Madson (whom I really like, but hate his agent) to get a good LFer. With the way that closer Crap to Bed if Madson has at least half as good a start to next year as he finished this one there would be plenty of teams interested.

Why is there so much interest in Matt Stairs? He got the ultimate prize, he is 41 years old next year 42.

I actually heard something the other day and I can’t remember where i heard it, but some writer/reporter isn’t sold on the A’s signing Holliday. He actually thought that they might flip him for a bunch of guys. Any thoughts Tim?

Km, the reason Ibanez hit more RBI was that he did not have to bat behind someone who hit 140 of them. there were more runners on base for him to knock them in.

If the phillies platoon Then remember this, they are banking on Werth to better last years numbers. I still am not sold on him ,to protect howard. I know he has had wrist problem but to bank on him to repeat without insurance is not the way a team who is trying to defend its title should be setting its roster. And unless Golson has a big turn around he is another toolsy player who is nothing special. another michael bourn who the phillies continue to draft three like him this year in gose.hewitt.collier. every draft expert will tell you they love speedy toolsy guys but so far it hasn’t work . One of the most knowledgeable baseball expert keith law rates golson very low with no trade value.

Pat the bat is in decline mode we should not just give him money because we owe it to him. Pats like Dr Jekyll and Mr. hyde. You never know which one your going to get through out the season. He can barely chase after the ball. As much as i like him and a fan of his i think he has run his course in philly and if we do sign him no more than 2 years.

I think I’d be okay with a Baldelli/Dobbs platoon in LF to start the year IF we went out and got Lowe. That could provide 25 HRs, 80+ RBIs and good average (.280). I just like the idea of giving Dobbs a shot at a more regular gig, he’s earned that shot. I think Baldelli could play any OF position, which is nice too, though it seems he has the least amount of time in LF.
If that LF combo didn’t work out, we’d still have some nice chips to do a midseason trade (Donald, Madson) for a more reliable LF/righty bat. Unfortunately, I think I’m wishin’ and hopin’ on Lowe. I wonder if we’re even talking to him.
Moneywise, we’d save the 10-12M/yr for Burrell, hopefully get Lowe+Baldelli for less than 20M/yr, and only be adding 8-10M/yr. Easy for me to spend….

Ugh I was just reading on mlbtraderumors.com about the Phils interest in Raul Ibanez and his age 37-39 seasons playing left field. It made me throw up in my mouth a lil bit.

How can anyone be openly AGAINST the idea of Ibanez on this team… he’s a career .286 hitter… most of his career for the Mariners (who play in a Pitcher-friendly ballpark).. and over the last 3 years he’s averaged 26 HRs, 113 RBIs, and a .291 average
And he plays LF, which is the least important defensive position (which is why we stick Burrell there)..
Sign Ibanez, i’m all for it.. even more today than I was yesterday

I like the idea of trading for Rowand, I read somewhere that the Giants are not happy with his numbers last year compared to the contract they offered to him, I also heard that they would like to sign Frucal, they will need to cut payroll to do so, and the Phils wont take Rowands current contract on, so if he Giants ate $14 mil of Rowands contract ($2mil this yr, $4 each for 3 yrs after) then it would work out great for both teams, Phils fill a loss of Burrell, with a great club house guy (cant underestimate Burrells clubhouse leadership) with a guy that knows the entire team already, right handed batter, only pay $6mil this year, $8 mil the next three. And the Giants save $30 over the next 4 yrs. Everybody wins!
