The Dish On Jermaine Dye

A quick rumor from the end of the week, ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago reported the Phillies may be interested in a trade for White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye. That doesn’t mean the Phils have asked about him.

Dye — who hit .292 with 34 HR and 96 RBI last season — is owed $11.5 million in 2009, and has a mutual option for $12 million in 2010. His contract also includes a no-trade clause to six teams. One of those teams is likely the Red Sox, who was on his short list in a 2005 no-trade clause. I wouldn’t think the Phils are on that list.

If the Phils were to trade for Dye — who will be 35 — it would mean likely picking up most of his remaining contract, then giving Chicago some sort of minor league return. It might not be Carlos Carrasco, but something close — maybe Jason Donald.

Dye is a cheaper alternative from other rumored options Magglio Ordonez and Manny Ramirez, and potentially cheaper than Matt Holliday. He’s probably a better contact hitter than Pat Burrell, while still being able to rip off a 30-HR season. He wouldn’t be a bad acquisition, but only if the price isn’t too high. It might be.

The only question I have is can he still move around out there decently enough for shane to cover him up a bit?

also, id be all for picking up dye if they can get chicago to pickup at least some of that money. just help them out a bit…OR, a compromise…well pick up all of the rest of dye’s contract IF chiacgo eats adam eatons last year next season and takes him off our hands, lol.

I rather see Burell back. Look, if Pat’s stellar performance in the first half of 08 had happened in the second half, we’d all be hoping and begging Pat to stay with us for many, many years. And he’d probably have a 3-year deal by now. He’s 32 (Dye is 35), led the league in outfield assists, very good production at the plate, and a valuable team leader. We have one of the best leftfielders in baseball.

In my opinion, either we give him a 3-year deal or we save all that money and settle with a Dobbs/Bruntlett/Jenkins mix. If we’re gonna get a guy like Dye who will only be a couple million cheaper than Burrell, then it’s definitely not worth it.

He was playing RIGHT field for the White Sox, a moving him to left on the Phillies would be a defensive upgrade.

    Price too high?

He had a WAY better average than Burrell, more homeruns and more RBIs. He can certainly move better than Burrell and is CHEAPER than Burrell’s $14 million price tag.

Burrell is going to get big time money somewhere…this would be a bargain in my eyes.

oh ok…cool. id rather get dye then…hes cheaper than waht burrell was and produces as good or better and is more mobile..

id be all over that deal…donalds never gonna play here because i dont believe theyd ever trade jimmy. throw him in there, maybe add kendrick in there. boom. done deal.

you can then go out and spend the rest of your money on resigning eyre, getting another bullpen arm, and signing or trading for a starting pitcher. the rest of it will be arb raises. i think victorino and hamels are in line for long-term extensions to buy out some arb and FA years.

This deal makes alot of sense. Donald and Kendrick, but I wouldnt give up any more than that at this point. They need to move him more than we need him is the way I’d look at it.

I’d still rather re-sign Burrell, but if that doesnt happen, this doesnt look too bad.

Tim, can you layout the 2009 Phillies payroll in one of your posts, including what they still owe Thome and what the arbitration guys are likely to get? I’d like to see where they come out with the players that are already in house.

They did it on 610 assuming they sign hamels long term ( which I think is akey) and paying ryan howard 16 mil. Given all the arbitration raises and keeping eyre and moyer. They also replaced burrells salary with a platoon outfielder around 6 mil and it came out to about 143 millio which is a 40# raise in salary cap rase. I think they only owe about 3 on thome which isn’t bad but I don’t see where the money for holliday and everybody else is coming from

Dye is way better than Burrell
Doesnt look nearly as good in tight pants though

After looking into Dye’s stats and career, he is better than what I initially thought… I’d still rather see Burell but if we can get Dye by picking up his contract (and only sending them Donald), then this option is a close second.

Smith, it’s going to be difficult to replace that beautiful view we have from left field.

I don’t get it.. wouldn’t you rather just pay an extra $2M and keep Burrell? If its just about dollars and sense, they have Donald cheap for awhile. What are they going to do when Feliz’s deal runs out? Find some other mediocre 3b for 5-6M a year, or have Donald for 450K? It pays for itself.

If Dye did become a Philly surely he’d play RF with Werth in left

The Thome money and the Wes Helms money are now clear, freeing up a total of 9+ mm. cots baseball contracts is a good source for contract info on players. dye contract is favorable. and as long as he can move around well hed be an upgrade over burrell and would fit nicely in LF. thatd would give us 3 mobile outfielders again. burrell is younger but much less mobile than dye, and dye still produces more runs. i think hed be a good choice to breakup howard and utley in the order.
..maybe go rollins utley dye howard werth shane feliz ruiz 9th

thats a pretty good lineup if you ask me.

Colorado apparently asked for too much from St. Louis and those talks are apparently dead. Does this lower the price for Holliday? If the asking price is bearable, I would rather see Holliday or Dye in LF than Burrell in 2009.

Dye could be a great pick-up, he’s a natural rightfielder so he would man right and Werth moves to left. Holliday is going to be more trouble than he’s worth and I think subtraction via addition is exactly what we’re trying to avoid and a deal for Dye could be done without overly taxing the farm baring in mind those prospects would be replaced by Burrell’s potential draft compensation. If you draw up a list of pro’s and cons of the available outfielders and I’m sure Dye reaches the top of the list.

I don’t think the White Sox let him go easily but this is by far the best option presented with the lowest amount of risk.

dye is an interesting possibility. i’d still ideally like to see them bring pat back but if that doesn’t happen, i think dye is a more realistic (and thus more worthwhile) option than holliday.

I like it…If Burrell rejects latest offer,go for Dye..Numbers look better than Burrell. This deal’s not that expensive.
And he’s got to be better than a 7 inning player.
Anybody know what kind of guy he is though, hopefully he’s not an a***hole.

Richie, I didn’t know much about Dye, so I looked him up on mlb.com. Looks like he does alot of charity work, particularly with the Boys and Girls Clubs, from their assessment, he sounds like a stand-up guy, haven’t found anything negative yet.

Dye is definately not an a**hole. I think it would definately be worth pursuing. I dont want to give up kendrick though. i can just see it. kendrick wins 15 and gavin floyd wins 18 next year. yikes!!! i wouldnt mind giving up donald for dye there, but no pitching or as the one guy suggested, take eaton. it all really depends on what the white sox are trying to do. total rebuild? going after youth? i mean look what we did with thome. paid more than half his salary, but got some good pieces in return. i’d be willing to give up more pieces if they throw in some money.

Make sure Dye gets a physical if this happens.

Thanks Georgie and Andrew R….By the way since you mentioned Gavin Floyd dont you hate that shit about “change of scenery players, who leave the Phils and go nuts”?
Hopefully we get a player or two who comes to us and has a career year once in a while.
