They probably have little to do with the draft except signning off on teh 1st round pick and ok-ing any over slot signing bonuses. Besides that I feel most GMs probably do little with the draft. Arbuckle and Woelver (spelling) were the real movers and shakers of our drafts.Still, I agree with you even if Arbuckle leaves why would people leave with them when they might not have a job anywhere else? Plus the Phills just won a WS they can throw some $$$ to these scouts.I think we are also forgetting Chuck Lamar here who did a fine job in Tampa and now seems to be here and about to do the same.Plus our draft philosophy really changed last yr as opposed to the previous yrs. Though we still took those "toolsy" guys and too many for my tastes, we took alot of intriguing arms and spent money on players like Cosart we would have never done before. And as well as Arbuckle might have been, our farm has widely been regarded in the bottom 1/3 of baseball for some time.

Hey new here, been reading awhile but not posting.

Matt Kwasiborski- I don’t understand giving the Gm all the glory for draft picks? Wade drafted alot of the core and made some great off-season deals. Yeah, you can give Arbuckle credit for scouting them and recommending them but it was Wade who had the call. And what GM in any sport gets it right every single time? It was a class move by Gillick to give Wade credit- apparently you guys either have no class or cannot accept that we are now winners. I know it will take a while to sink in but we need to accept we are winners and stop focusing on the teams that did not make it. And relish that the 2008 Phillies are WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!!Arbuckle would have been a fine choice for GM. And who says he is going to take scouts with him? Where is he going? I am not sure any other teams that have a GM opening right now. And someone has to win and someone had to lose and unfortunately, Arbuckle lost and wasn't chosen. It is life sometimes. He will find a job, obviously.Amaro- you must not have been paying attention since 1998 if you didn't see this coming. Seriously- how could you not have had vision to see this?

You guys that are critical crack me up. The owners feel he will have better chance to get Hamels and some of the others to sign. But most feel the owners won't pay Howard the twenty million plus he wants, also a lot of people feel Arbuckle will take a lot of the scouts with him. I really believe that Arbuckle should have got the job. But he isn't a yes man so he got screw for all the years he was here.I know the owners will still be bottom line budject and won't go out and get the players to keep this team a contender for a least a couple of more years. Without Gillick who relies on his scout to get players like dobbs and werth, romano, Amaro scare me. He has a lack of player development experience, So being in my fifties I Will die before they ever win again, unless John millenton take over the team. He is the only owner who wants win and spend the money it takes/

According to reports today on wip, Ruben Amaro got the job because of the inpending contracts that are coming up He has been doing the money part for gillick. You don't know if it's the motivation of the players or coaches but there's a defniate trend and players on Ed Wade engineered teams don't reach there potential while the veterans regress and Tejada is our Abreu, that said this Houston team has players more suited to leader than Wade's Phils.I didn't like what Gillick was doing for much of his time here, I thought the critical moves were reaches instead of paying for value which teams got away with in the mid to late nineties but Gillick put his stamp on this team. It's easy to critisize decisions but 3 rings and at least 2 playoff trips with every franchise he's overseen is the mark of the man. I would assume that behind the scenes Amaro has been the true lieutenant to Gillick which is why he's in line for the gig.

Ed Wades a luck guy, he puts teams together that seem to be inept for most of the season before a late but futile run in the final weeks. It goes back to 04 I believe. I was just going through key plays made by players when they first started.I ended by rewatching some of a game from this season---the final game of the season, after the phillies already clinched.I wonder if I'll be looking back at that game again in the future, when I go to study the beginnings of the major league career of promising young prospect Lou Marson.

It’s funny that you post this…since I already miss baseball, I went to the top plays archive section on phillies.com. Only Phillies phans saw this championship coming. Now that we won and with all the phans jumping on the bandwagon we should have the money to secure long-term deals for Hamels, Howard, and the rest of the guys for many years to come!

Very well written Tim! Knowing that we've watched these players work to make it here makes it that much sweeter.

Thinking about all those years of losing, I’d never have thought we had the makings of a championship team brewing in the minors.
