[...] Jermaine Dye to the Phillies? categories | Phillies, hot stove Mike Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the White Sox are trying to unload OF Jermaine Dye in an effort to get “younger and quicker.” Seeing as the White Sox seem like the only team the Phillies deal with, it’s worth questioning what it would take to get it done.Dye is a couple years older than Burrell and doesn’t have the eye that Bait does, but for all intents and purposes Jermaine would provide the same protection as the big left fielder. Really I think this decision comes down to what they’re giving up. If Burrell walks the Phillies will receive the draft pick of the team who signs him plus the supplemental pick between rounds – if the Phillies can get Dye for less talent than that I think they have to make the deal, especially considering that his contract (one year at 11.5 mil with a mutual option at 12 for the next) is going to be more manageable than Burrell’s.The commenters at PN are throwing out names like Greg Golson, Kyle Kendrick, Jason Donald, and Antonio Bastardo. Honestly Eaton’s got the plague tag and anyone that does want him knows they can pick him up for nothing through waivers/rule 5/free agent if he doesn’t accpet minor league assignment. Jarmaillo has almost no value on the market, Jenkins wouldn’t be wanted due to the price tag and Stairs doesn’t have much value either.

Ben Sheets… He’s not going to get years from the sound of it but he’s rumored to be expecting around $18m py.

Yes, the Phillies would gain but its not like the White Sox wouldn’t also. Remember that the market for Dye may be changed now that its known that they want him out. Also, just because the Phillies would be dealing from positions were thay have depth does not mean they aren’t giving something up.
Golson is one of the top 5 prospects in terms of being called up in the Phillies system.
Jamarillo is projected as a decent backup in the the near future (so maybe slide Coste in this spot instead since it will be tough for him to make the Phillies roster) who can back up AJ
Eaton has had games where he looks like a solid 3 and look what a change of scenary did for Lidge and Gavin Floyd (plus he won’t have to worry about RJohnson getting extrabase hits off of him in the AL) plus $5million is not a huge flyer to take on a vet
Jenkins or Stairs would give them a power OF to platoon in Dye’s spot or DH if Thome’s back gets gimpy

Correct me if I’m wrong but do the White Sox have a backup catcher? What about something like this…..

Phillies get: Dye (both sides agree to 2010 option) and a minor leaguer (probably a AA reliever with late inining potential)

WSox get: Golson, Jamarillo (sp?), Eaton and $3 million (he competes for the 5th starter with a injury prone Contreas) and either Jenkins or Stairs

Just curious, but why would a one year deal to Mike Mussina for about 10m be ridiculous? Nobody talks about him. Obviously he still has something left and he hand a great year last year. Is he looking or just going back to the Yankees?

NJ- What di Williams give up for Swisher? Was it Sweeny, De Los Santos, and Gio for Swisher???

If I am right than this makes this trade to the Yanks REALLY bad, not saying I would want Swisher but my god, they just traded De Los Santos AND Gio for Betemit, Nunez, and Marquez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t get it… It’s not really a salary dump but after sending two stud prospects to Oakland they then sell low to the Yankees for a utility guy and two minor league prospecs and they throw in a kid who had 21 saves in the minors for them last year… Just doesn’t make any sense…

There’s been rumors Vaquez is on the block but it won’t be the easiest deal to make.

The Yankees also get a minor league closer, either GM is about to be named a Yankee employee or we’re about to hear the Yankees have sent some serious prospects to Chicago.

Vasquez is obviously not Ozzie’s favorite player, so maybe Chicago sells low on him too. Who knows, just thinking out loud, but I would not be surprised if Vasquez is moved.
