UPDATE (11:12 a.m.): Chase Utley’s heady snag and throw home in game five of the World Series won Postseason Moment of the Year.

***

In a quick wrap of some season-ending news, the Phillies were awarded some This Year in Baseball Awards this week.

Brad Lidge was named Closer of the Year, Charlie Manuel was named Manager of the Year and Pat Gillick was named Executive of the Year in the fan voting.

Congratulations to all three — clearly, they deserved the honors.

    Sweet! Much deserved!
Was there an award for the Setup man of the year? I would strongly consider the Bridge to Lidge for that award -

I know this is COMPLETELY off topic, but I really need to vent right now about Mark Texeira. The guy is supposedly a class act, saying all the way through negotiations that he’s only concerned with winning and playing close to home. Yet, now here we stand, with, (supposedly) the two best teams with chances to win out of the bidding with Boston and Anaheim, Baltimore, being the hometown team, apparently out of the bidding, and the Washington Nationals, arguably the team farthest away from winning in the Majors, the new frontrunner for Tex. And it’s not about the Money!? Get the f*ck out of here Texeira, you are no better than any other athlete in Major League Baseball. Now PLEASE prove me wrong and sign with Boston. The Phillies don’t need you in the NL East. Even for the Nationals. Because really, it’s all about winning, right Mark?

Chase’s throw home was spectacular! Definitely deserved that!

And Manuel, Gillick, and Lidge: well-deserved.

MA – the light is shining through eh? Being OK with where I am in life financially (certainly not wealthy, working is a better description) it seems to me when you are talking millions upon millions what difference would it make? The difference maker (to people like me) would or should be to play for a winner. To get the prize you were always believed was the goal for any baseball player and that is to be on a champion.
So, if Texiera signs with the Nats or Baltimore it is for the cash and nothing else. At least Aaron Rowand got a ring with the White Sox before he prostituted his services to San Francisco. Who in their right mind would think that SF is going anywhere?
Now, will Ryan Howard or Ryan Madson be of the same ilk? Will they sign a contract for a lesser amount (lets say a contract for Ryan at 12 mil a year for 4 years) or go to a lesser team for more years and more money? At what point can someone say, “OK, what I want is a winner..” and mean it?
It sounds like a character issue plain and simple.

I remember being in Section 431 for Utley’s throw home… My dad and I were watching the play develop and Utley faked us out! We both look towards first and then… out at home? WOW what a play. The score was tied at three at that point and I believe that was the Series winning throw. After that inning we know the rest is history, but if you saw the players on the bench and trotting off the field after that play, you knew they were gonna break the tie. It was that play that the team knew… They were about to become world champs. Even Utley had a little grin on his face.
