I don’t agree with Tim that the Phillies positioned themselves as awkwardly for the future as he suggested. If, like Tim thinks, Moyer might be a slightly lesser, still productive/wily version of himself in ’09, than the Phillies can simply enjoy his services next year, and then present him, however respectfully, with the information that if he wishes to play out his contract, then the Phils would likely make him a useful middle-relief guy (assuming that one of the prospects/a signing has arrived by that point). He can always choose to retire.

This article was written before the deal was announced. This guy assumed that we were going to have to pay $10 million per year for his services… the deal is not written that way. The guaranteed money is only $6.5 million. If he performs like we hope he performs, then he’s worth $10 million per year. The pendulum swings the other way when you realize the deal we got for his services.

Actually, NJ, after getting Moyer and Park, I think that getting Lowe now wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do. That would be just too many pitchers that wouldn’t leave space for Carrasco/Happ/Kendrick, plus too expensive overall. I knew it was gonna be Moyer OR someone at least better than him (like Lowe).

The minute we resigned Moyer, I knew Lowe wasn’t gonna happen. I’m not mad at Moyer, but just upset that we didn’t stay in the game for Lowe. I remember reports saying that Yankees and Phillies were the highest bidders at a moment… later the Yankees lost interest… then the Braves… then the Mets lost some interest… Obviously, Boras is asking for too much money, but he can ask all he wants… eventually the price should drop. We simply gave up when could have had a decent shot at Lowe.

If Lowe ends up with something close to a 3/45M deal, I’d be very pissed at Amaro.
If Lowe ends up with something similar to a 4/64M deal, then resigning Moyer would’ve been the best choice all along.

i like lowe a lot, i’ve been saying the phillies should go after him since the middle of last season. still, the contract boras is asking for is preposterous. if amaro gave him that he’d be a moron. it just wasn’t realistic.

Manny if it was so realistic then why isn’t he a Phil? Why would Amaro have signed Moyer/Ibanez/Park if a deal really could have happened with Lowe/decent corner outfielder/decent middleman?

Excuse me for wanting our team to get better… Getting Lowe became a very realistic option, especially after the Yankees got Burnett. It was never comparable to getting Holliday. Lowe looked much more feasible and getting him would’ve directly addressed the team’s biggest need. Lowe still looks attainable today… and we gave up, that’s what pisses me off. If you could tell me that he will end up getting a Burnett-type deal, then I wouldn’t care much. But given the current circumstances, Lowe is definitely attainable –not now, though, with Park and Moyer aboard.

I think they did fine…the rotation taht won the world series is back..if it falters, then you can promote carrasco or trade for someone…i prefer building a rotation from within via prospects or through trades…free agency inflates their prices and years too much..

Thats what Boras does, someone will pony up and Lowe himself is likely to force his way into the Red Sox which was his preference. I just don’t get how some here get so angry when we can’t land Lowe or Holliday as if we have to land the big fish or the FO aren’t doing enough.

I expect more from the guys on the roster and the emergence of young controllable minor leaguers that will allow us to make select high profile moves because your not spending $2/4m on secondary players.

If Drabek keeps it up, that is quite possible. His ERA is below 2.80 in the HWB… Michael Taylor is doing well, too. It would be great if we could get some minor league updates on here… or a minor league blog going to talk about these players.

They are being ultra careful with Carrasco… I think that they expect him to be a #2 and if they bring him up as a #4, his mentality will be to pitch as a #4. It’s a fine line… you want to challenge these kids but you don’t want to throw them into the wolves and potentially limit their upside. Carlos is still young.
