It was a busy night, so if you’re just tuning in:
- The Phillies traded catcher Jason Jaramillo to Pittsburgh for catcher Ronny Paulino.
- Chan Ho Park might be a Phillie by tomorrow.
- And yes, the Phils are still very much interested in Derek Lowe.
All these posts are up and updated. No Nation Minute tomorrow, but that’s okay — you’re getting wall-to-wall Winter Meetings coverage.

Chan Ho Park? Isn’t he the one who sucks when he pitches back to back? As long a they give him breaks, he will be OK though I suppose.

I like signing Park if we can get him cheap on a 1-year deal. Especially since, given the Yankees’ offer to Burnett (5/91), I really do think the Phils can sign Lowe. A rotation of Hamels/Lowe/Myers/Blanton/Park is fine by me, especially with Carrasco and Happ waiting in the wings at AAA.
I also must say, given all the comments on the last thread about how ridiculous the Yanks’ offer for Sabathia was, that what they paid is really not out of line. In fact, the deal they gave CC represents a CONTRACTION over the last few years prices for top-end pitching. Go read the analysis at fangraphs.com if you don’t believe me. The Yankees’ spending spree is not the death knell for baseball – they have a crapload of cash coming off the payroll, and new stadium revenue to look forward to. This is not going to be a year-in, year-out thing, even for NYY. Should MLB have a salary cap? Absolutely, but this offseason is not Exhibit A for that.

If that front three can pitch like they have that is a pretty formidable top three arms in the rotation. I would love to see that this coming year.

I must admit, i’ve very confused about the trade of catchers. There must be something more to that deal. Amaro must have talks with other catchers in mind…

I think that the idea of Jaramillo to Cubs then San Diego as part of the Peavy/DeRosa deal was a problem. I think they could now send Paulino as part of the deal with a pitcher (Kendrick hopefully) to ultimately get DeRosa in the 3 team deal. As for Chan Ho Park, not sure I get that one. The idea of the Yankees looking to spend a lot more money to get Burnett may help our cause to get Lowe which is nice. However, I really can’t believe the Mets just got another closer in Putz. I know we all said that Rodriguez was not that big a deal, but when you have two proven closers, Putz at 98-99mph, you can’t deny that the Mets just made themselves much better in the back end of the bullpen. Our bullpen was great last year but we need that significant starter to counter the Mets bullpen improvement and I don’t mean Park.

yeah K-Rod didn’t scare me too much, but that’s a real nifty 8th/9th combo there now with Putz, considering both stay healthy.
However, if Madson continues to pitch like he did in the postseason, we have ourselves a pretty solid 8th/9th combo as well, and Romero/Durbin allow a pretty solid 7th in addition.
Geoff you are right in that Lowe now really would be nice. I also like Ibanez, even though he is another lefty. I think if you drop Werth into the middle of chase, howard, ibanez, he’ll get to face a lot of left handed pitchers, and that could really help out his performance, because as we all know, he crushes left handers.

I agree 100% with Geoff.
I’d like to have Ibanez moreso than DeRosa, though.

Our bullpen is just as dominant… but this is a great move for NY. It’s probably a better move than signing K-Rod (Putz is one heck of an 8th inning guy and a nice insurance policy if K-Rod blows up). And I’m worried because our biggest offseason news so far has been essentially losing key parts of last year’s success.

again, RAUL IBANEZ AND ADAM DUNN ARE LEFT HANDED HITTERS ONLY, the phillies dont need them, they need a RIGHT HANDED POWER HITTER…..

Well, DeRosa is more of a target because he can play 2nd base in case Utley isn’t healthy to start the season, 3B in case Feliz is hampered by a bum back and also the OF. Ibanez is a better offensive hitter but DeRosa is a solid utlity guy who is better than Bruntlett. If you are looking purely at offense then Ibanez is your guy.
Everyone thinks that IF Burnett signs with NY, then they won’t chase Lowe. That isn’t the case. They may not offer Lowe as many years but there are still rumors out there that the Yankees will sign 3 of the starting pitchers. And there are reports that the Red Sox are working behind the scenes to secure Lowe over the Yankees.
With the catching situation: We traded a Triple A C for a MLB ready backup catcher. Reason here is simple. Ruiz will be our starter with Paulino backing him up. Marson, as he should, gets to play all year in Lehigh and has to prove himself offensively there first. It also spells the end of Coste’s time here which is a shame.

Man of course the Phillies are going after the only guy to give up two grand slams in the same inning.

Mets in acquiring K-Rod in a very easy and a great deal which didn’t cost that much and bringing Joe Jason Putz into the 8th inning role was a very bold and very PHENOMINAL move which has guys like Santana,Pelfrey and Maine salivating. If you notice that I listed 3 starters, you noticed correctly.Mets need to go out there and bring in another starter, left fielder, more experience on the bench including a 4th outfielder…….Hmmmmm,I wonder what Rocco Baldelli is doing.

Geoff, I agree with you on Ibanez. If we’re gonna take a flyer on a guy that’s as old and unpredictable as second tier Ibanez, we might as well get second tier RH power hitter that will force a manager to make a move. Dunn, a first tier player, might be worth a look (40+ HR’s and 90+ RBI’s in 5 straight seasons… that’s pretty consistent). I would even be ok batting him 6th… can you imagine Dunn in the 6 hole?? Give Werth a shot to bat 5th… he can’t be any worse defensively than Burrell and he’s only 29 y/o. To me, that’s progress.

if dunns price goes down enough it may not be a bad idea..i mean, if theyre desperate for power and cant find any RH power bats.

Well…..it looks like we have our LF situation solved after all, if you believe the rumblings out of the meetings regarding hoe everyone feels about Pat Burrell. It looks like he’ll be back. And so as not to embarrass him completely, I would give him a 1y/7m deal. Looks like Amaros not so dumb after all.

If I were the phillies…i would NOT go over 3 years for lowe, under almost any circumstance…its just not worth it..these contracts/offers for sabathia burnett texeira, etc…are out of control, DISGRACEFUL, and absolutely sickening. just totally disgusting. the fact that texeira hasnt accepted one of those offers yet and is holding out for more years/mobney, same as burnett, sabathia, etc…to me, that makes them all pieces of sh*t. if lowe wants respect, hell take less money to come here, otherwise, get out..jackass….

If the price is Lowe enough…..Mets should consider Adam Dunn as well.

Dunn strikes out WAY TOO MUCH to be added to this lineup.. Ibanez makes this lineup completely unbalanced with Leftys.
As soon as I heard the Jaramillo trade, I figured that we would just “flip” Paulino in a deal.. but why would the Pirates make this move to begin with??
On a side note.. Is Carlos Ruiz playing for Panama again in the WBC this year? Lou Marson could get a chance to see some good action in Spring Training, eventhough I imagine he’s slated to start at AAA, which is among the reasons Jaramillo was moved. But either Coste or Paulino has to get traded now, because there are 4 catchers at or above the AAA level right now in our system

same with howard: just shut up and take the money…dont go crying for a few more million when youre getting 10mm already…
im sick of it..im glad i have a job, yet MILLIONS of americans are starving because they got fired and their company stole their pension funds and got away with it…meanwhile these guys are holding out for 90mm when they have 80mm in the hand…this whole thing makes me sick…
id make a generous offer to lowe in terms of money, but over 3 years..if he doesnt take it it tell him to go climb a tree and move on to someone else..

coste is gone…paulino starts the year as backup..
afer seeing all that last night: MLB needs a salary cap, and, like the NHL, they need to force the players to roll back 25% of their salaries to reset the value of all contracts and level the playing field with a salary cap. that shouild allow teams to operate better without having to gouge as much at the gate/concession stands liek theyve been doing…

i love watching baseball and following the team..but im sick of all of this idol worship of people that complain over not making 15mm when theyre making 10mm…seriuosly, sabathia said he felt bad about taking the yankees money and said hed be ok with 100mm from someone else, then the next day, turned around and took even more money

Tex’s avg, .290, 37 HRs, 123 RBIs, 180 Hits, 103 Runs Scored
and.. a Gold Glove every year
Dude is filthy, but even that can’t be worth $20 M a year.. how can you afford to give him any teammates.. That is why he can’t go to Baltimore or Washington.. they’ll never be able to afford anyone else, and he’ll be the bad guy because of it.
I kinda want to see him go to the Yankees, and just see them miss the playoffs again

He got $161 million, instead of $160….so that the average of his contract was more than Johan Santana was making.
Sabathia = $23 Million per year
Santana = $22.92 Million per year

i agree..let him go off to the yankees too…if the yankees want sabathia, burnett, lowe, AND texeira, they can have them….let them blow all that money. with those four players, still, i will ONE HUNDRED PERCENT GUARANTEE that the yankess STILL wont win the WS….

You know how much more the average male Yankee fan will go to a tanning-salon before the summer starts, if they sign Teixiera and another pitcher!!!

The thing is the yankees spend the revenue. We bought in a lot of extra revenue. and even with the arb cases will only be adding a little more to our payroll. I really believe right now the mets have really help themselfs. and there three starters are better than ours. Sanatana, maine who kills us. Peltry. if they get back perez with there added bullpen help they only need seven innings. and santana will be just awesome. They won’t be blowing saves like last year when he pitched.

Somehow I have a feeling we are all going to be really dissapointed with the Phillies front office. I have a gut feeling the thinking might be – we just won lets not make any major additions to a proven winner – pick up a few players on the cheap – resign what we have and be done with it.
All the talk about Lowe, ibanez, and all other Mid and Top tier FA’s is just smoke to increase competition and drive up the price tag for other teams.

Geoff’s right, all this talk about guys holding out for another million or two, while things are so bad for so many people, it’s really revolting. I love baseball and will always watch, but will I constantly be reminded that these players we hold in such high regard would leave us in a heartbeat for another cool M? Oh yeah! I mean, how much freakin’ money does one person need in their lifetime? I try to think of how I could spend several M $, and after taking care of my entire family and friends, what more do you need? I will jump off my bandwagon now, but this IS really disgusting.

On the other side of that arguement though is the logic.. they DID just win the World Series, with the team that they have in place.. and that team was created not by making MAJOR moves and signing overpriced Free Agents.
So why would they want to switch their philosophy when it was just proved that it works.. For the sake of keeping up with the Mets payroll?
We’ve seen how good and how bad Brett Myers can be.. what if he comes out this year, and has a full season like the 2nd-half of next year? We’ll want to resign him, right? And we’ll need to pay him more than $9 M he makes now.. it will probably be closer to $13… Hamels, Victorino, and Werth all make peanuts compared to what they should make too…
making moves just for the sake of making moves will not improve this club, and would make it hard to rebuild when these overpaid veterans are past their prime, but still signed for a few more years. The only way to get rid of them is to take crappy players like who we got for Schilling… and its a big snowball effect

On sports-radio last night, one of the guys made a GREAT observation… you could hit the POWERBALL JACKPOT $$$$$$$$……. and still not have as much money as CC Sabathia just signed for with the Yankees.. it makes me sick

That’s just mind-boggling. CC should give at least half that money to charity.

yeah it all does make me sick..im not jumping off the bandwagon, im still a fan…but i dont worship these guys by any means…
i agree that they dotn need major earth shattering moves…myers is here..carrasco will become a stabl;e force at least in the rotation in the coming years…you really do win by growing yoru own talent and using trades…the yankees could sign every the top 5 free agents (which they may do) and still not make the playoffs..myers makes 12mm this year btw

Geoff, I meant I will jump off my SOAPBOX now, I will NEVER jump off my Phillies bandwagon, no matter how much I bitch about them!
Whoa, 12M for Myers this year? He’d better keep his head on straight, not an easy task for him, I’m afraid.
