The Mets may, in fact, make a big splash at the Winter Meetings. Multiple sources are reporting the Mets are in a “critical stage” in talks with Francisco Rodriguez. According to Newsday’s David Lennon, the Mets wined and dined K-Rod at a steakhouse last night.

No word on if it was Outback or Longhorn.

Welcome to the Winter Meetings.

K-Rod blows plenty of saves… his 2008 absolute numbers are stellar, but his relative numbers shows you that he is definitely a bit overrated… It be kinda happy to see the Mets use a big chunk of their money on this guy.

They can have him… overrated and overpriced. Another NY blunder.

Tim- I hate to call you out, but the headline should read “STAKE” claim… unless there is a T-Bone involved in the transaction.

yea there is a T-Bone involved in the transaction (or at least a filet), the mets wined and dined K-Rod at a STEAKhouse last night…get the play on words?

Chuck, I was just about ready to jump on Tim for “steak”, but then I read about the steak dinner, just punning around, huh Tim?

Probably Ruth Chris or Capital Grill I’m guessing as I’m sure K-Rod wants enough $$ to buy Longhorn, not eat there…..

The Mets can have him. Hope they overpay to and have less to spend elsewhere.

I said before.. with our heavy LH-hitting lineup.. I would much rather see the Mets go after K-Rod (original nickname) then go after Brian Fuentes, Fuentes would be much harder to handle for the way our team is built.

They want to go with a RH power-pitcher VS. our LH power-hitters… I’m loving that

    I agree Don.

I could see Ryan Howard slamming awayyyy

    Hey Chuck,
If you actually read what he wrote, you’d see he mentions how the Mets took him out for steak. Hence, why he used steak in the headline.

Rodriguez to the Mets. Minaya’s master plan is almost complete. Now if he could only get rid of that pesky third basemen…..

What he’s really saying is – I need to make a buck so please sign up so I can spam this shit out of you and sell your email address to other parties who will then spam you endlessly with “special offers” cleverly disguised as “free stuff”.

Thats quite accurate, Fuentes is the guy that would damage the Phillies the most, the K-Rod move reeks of desperation. Theyre gonna do it, everyone knows it, and its gonna backfire on them at some point. Maybe not this season, but hell break down or come back to earth eventually, and then the Mets will be stuck with another hefty contract. Ill bet it works for the first few months of the season though, until the Mets meltdown again because Jose Reyes is a turd.

Eh, Maverick: No. We don’t spam. I’m on the mailing list, and I get about one e-mail per month, and nothing else.

And making a buck? Yeah, that’s why we have this Web site.

Also, yes, that was a pun in the headline.

We actually only email our list about a dozen times a year or so. Just heads up updates on our trips, events and products. The people on it get first dibs on everything. So, we try to encourage the frequent readers on our site to join it just so it keeps them in the know.

And no, we don’t ever and would ever sell out the names of the people on our mail list. How do you think people win regular season and World Series tickets, t-shirts and trips from us? Being on our list improves your chances over just signing up for one of our contests.

Fair enough. Thanks for the explanation.

One question – how come you guys aren’t at the Bellagio getting first hand info?

Next year you guys gotta step it up! : )

BY THE WAY… I posted this on Saturday’s thread… I heard that CC Sabathia might end up back in Milwaukee. I heard that the deal MIL offered (5 years $100 mil with an opt out after 3 years) was substantially less than NY’s offer (6 years $140 mil) HOWEVER he felt bad taking $140 when he knows people that don’t have jobs… further, he’s not thrilled about being in NY and he really likes MIL. This is interesting; it does a couple of things. It brings the market down (Lowe becomes a cheaper commodity) and, if it pans out, it puts pressure on players to show some loyalty (helps mid-markets)… MIL is saying, “Look, we can’t guarantee you the same deal that NY can but we can talk again after 3 years when we have one or two WS rings.” In the end, if CC turns down $40 million, he becomes my favorite player not wearing red pinstripes and MIL becomes a force. If this holds true, what likely ends up happening… the Red Sox overpay for Lowe (we don’t get him), the Yankees make the fatal mistake of overpaying for Burnett and we end up with a guy like Wolf, Garland or Sheets.

Oh New York, when will you ever learn…

If CC turns down the Yankees offer, they will sign Lowe AND Burnett. Boston will get Tex and the Angels will sign Manny. Phillies will sign Moyer and Juan Rivera. Those are my crazy predictions.

The Mets and their fans make me vomit.

Does CC really care about “other people with no jobs?”

Chuck, where did you read that? I would love to read that article, that would gain CC a ridiculous amount of respect in my eyes. A guy that actually cared a little less about the money to play where he wants AND doing it because the rest of the country doesn’t live in the sports bubble that doesn’t quite get hit by economic recessions. LOVE THAT!!

Turning down $40 million is one thing, but whoever heard of someone turning down NYC for Milwaukee?!?
That said, I would still be shocked if CC wasn’t a Yankee next year.

I think that CC will sign with the Giants or the Brewers. The Yankees will get mad and go NUTS and sign lowe, burnett, AND texeira. the red sox signing texiera is really asinine because i really dont think they desperately need him..theyre just doing it so the yankees dont get him. now, the red sox may go japan again and sign kenshin kawakami. i think if the yankees dont get lowe, then the red sox will and the yankees will then overpay for oliver perez out of desperation.

if the phillies cant trade for garret atkins to play LF then theyll sign juan rivera and focus on trading for a starter to replace jamie moyer, as i think moyer is overstepping his bounds with his demands.

finally, brett myers has one year and 12 mm left on his contract, and while i dont think theyll trade him that is a very moveable contract….

Ken Rosenthal told the WIP morning show that story about CC this morning.

The stretch by KRod….and the 2-1 pitch ….swing and a long drive to DEEP righ center field……watch that baby…….outttttta heeeerrrrre……3 run home run Chase Utley…….and the Phils take a 5 to 3 lead here in the top of the 9th!!!!!!

at first glance, I thought the same thing about CC Sabathia.. how amazing is it that an athlete would be willing to leave that much money on the table because other people don’t have jobs or whatever…

but lets not be fooled completely here… getting $100 Million instead of $140 Million doesn’t make him the good samaritan.

If he wanted to be really cool, he’d sign for the $140, and say he’s giving $40 Million to charity or something.. instead of leaving it in the Yankees hands so they can give it somebody else next year..

I hope both NY teams miss the playoffs again this coming season.. scumbags

I do not understand all of the talk about picking up Rivera for the LF spot. He does not hit for power, no speed, mediocre BA, appeared to injured the past two seasons based on # of ABs. BFD!?!? Oh, I guess its the $$$$$$$?

Raul Ibanez declined arbitration from the Mariners. Speculation is that he will command a 3yr/$30M contract. His stats are impressive and he appears to be very consistent. He is a lefty so that is a draw back, otherwise, if the Phils are willing to replace Burrell with someone who produces even more than PTB did, it is a no brainer. Unless Ibanez does not want to play in Philly? Enlighten me Please?

Ibanez I think hits left hand pitching,

Its a great move except he’s a LH. Other than that I love it. Problem is, you just about have to have 3 LH in a row in our lineup. Not great late in games, but oh well.

Looking at the stats though, Ibanez is actually a better hitter vs. LHP last year than vs. RHP.
    .305avg/.868OPS/7HR (Vs LHP)
    .288/.822/16 (vs RHP)

    Pat
    .279/.951/7 (vs LHP)
    .238/.843/26 (vs RHP)

If you go by last year alone, Ibanez would be a better fit b/n Howard and Utley than Burrell.

Ibanez is a lefty and is a terrible fielder. Plus, you lose draft picks if you sign him. He’ll be 37 years old in June. The Phillies will sign a right-handed platoon bat for much cheaper.

Ibanez is also 36 years old, and hasn’t played in a meaningful game in the better part of 10 years…

Rivera is an option of a guy that you can play against LHP or RHP… he’s a career .284 against either.. and buys you time until you see what you really have on the farm.. OF seems to be our deepest spot, so the Phillies want to see if any of these guys are legit before they go overspending on a Free Agent outfielder who may eventually block their own guys from coming up one day if the FA contract was too long

I think Ibanez is a very good player… but he’s just not a great fit for this team.. he’s be much better suited for the Cubs who need a LH bat in their lineup. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them go after Ibanez and Bobby Abreu to try to get one of the two in their lineup. Abreu is more likely since he plays RF and still has a cannon for an arm

I agree that theres no need to overpay for the LF. Rivera is fine. Michael Taylor & John Mayberry are coming..its really better to spend the money on pitching, starting and relief

I agree, let’s put the money into pitching, I’m not in love with any of the LF options (Burrell, Dunn, Ibanez, etc.). Although there is that Manny guy….just kidding.

The CC story was on 610 WIP this AM… one of their baseball analysts (didn’t think it was Rosenthal). Phils are interested in Delmon Young… Twins are interested in Donald.

Young and Perkins for Donald and Myers/Happ/Kendrick, anyone? I had Perkins as a member of my 5 man rotation on Saturday’s thread. At that time, I called it a crazy scenario but maybe I’m not so crazy.

One more thing, does anyone think that we should try to trade Madson this year?

This talk of Rivera is nuts, his numbers aren’t burrel kind . not a good fielder not a great hitter against lefthand pitching. why in the world would we want this guy

mike mike… quote of the day, “Just read phillies wine and dine Punto at buger king in the Belloggio basement.”

Rivera’s numbers aren’t close to Burrell’s but neither are his salary demands…

What about Ty Wigginton? He kills lefthanded hitters, he played in Tampa so LaMar is familiar with him and I’m sure we have some Ed Wade prospects to trade Houston…

Chunk Do you mean cheap is better, Rivera isn’t the answer.

I keep hearing Dibble on XM (forgive me if it is not Dibble) talk about K-Rod’s jerky movements and how he could break down. I say let the Mets sign him. They took Billy Wagner, and you see where it got them. Perhaps they should look into Randy Wolf too.

Who had the most saves in 2008? K-Rod. And we know that a stud pitcher changing leagues does better in most cases. The Mets are focused on improving their bullpen, as they should be. Either K-Rod or Fuentes will be a huge improvement over the existing roster, excluding Wagner since he is as good as gone. Funny how some of the comments above mirror the comments made about Santana when that deal happened!
